3 years later this is still an OUSTANDING video! Thank you for laying out both of these racks. It’s all the info needed for us to know what we’re getting into with this kind of investment. Just be careful with your back, brother. Don’t injure yourself by lifting too heavy, too high, and too unstable! Thank you again.

I'm just exploring the kayak world. I'm already sold on foldable kayaks because I assumed a roof rack for a hard side would be too much for me and my 5'-3" self (and owning a vehicle whose roof is 7' above the ground). Then I saw these that drop down for loading ... and this video shows me why it's still not feasible for my use. Thank you for your effort.

@@MTips18 I would, but I go camping (in style) in a travel trailer and want to take the kayaks with me (and I refuse to attempt to double pull). Excellent demo. I bought the Yakima only because it costs less. In Canada I paid total 1,784 dollars tax and delivery (everything costs more in Canada). I preferred the Thule but it was almost 1,000 dollars more. I agree the Yakima is more difficult to load. I am 5 foot 2 female with a kevlar 39 pound 14 foot kayak and I could not lift it on from the front. However when i lifted it onto my shoulder I walked it parallel to the car right onto the rack (very slowly). So It is possible without someone else (but maybe not for your 84 pound kayak). I am going to maybe use some lubricant on the system too so maybe it may be slightly easier to maneuver up and down and sliding.

I wish these were made with an extension in the middle of the arm, so you could extend it all the way to the ground. If i didnt have teouble lifting the kayak, I'd just strap it on the rolf rack. It's just as easy to get the bow onto the back of the rack and push, as it is to lift it completely off the ground, while holding it parallel, to put it on the rack. I was really hoping for something like this, so I wouldn't need to tow a trailer. It's looking more and more like a trailer is inevitable

Excellent detailed information showing potential difficulties with each system. My fishing kayak currently rides on a 1999 Subaru Outback that's low to the ground and has a built in rack, and I'm able to slide my Trident Ultra 4.3 up the hatchback. But I need to have a backup plan when the Outback gives up the ghost. I also have a 2011 Outback with the basically useless swing out cross bar rack system. I'm on Oahu and it's rare to have enough parking space on the side of the car to load from the side, so I'm still looking for rear loading solutions. I’d like to know why people don’t slide the racks as far forward as they go and as far aft. The tracks can’t be that short. It adds soo much more stability spread out more

Unfortunately the roof rails on the pilot are not adjustable. They are in a fixed position.

Because it's harder to manipulate if the front and rear thule racks are further apart. Miltary press is easier with your arms closer to your body. Further apart would allow for his kayak to fit better but manipulating the lock latchs on the handle and lifting will be harder

With my back problems, the Thule looks best. That's one honker of a kayak. What brand is it? It looks like it would be good for longer expeditions, what with that large cargo bay in the rear.

How long are your crossbars? I'm wondering if it's possible to keep a cargo box and a kayak loader next to each other.

The Thule Hullavator Pro looks sturdier and less issues to use. Does it come for heavier and wider kayaks?
@AutoSensation
@AutoSensation 8 ай бұрын
No unfortunately. This is the widest it gets.
@Baddad36

Surely the kayak should be the other way up. A sit in will be full of water when it rains. It also looks extremely bouncy. Not sure I'd trust it. Also, I'd want the straps running though some fixture on the kayak itself. With the Thule you do get "locks" for it, but honestly, they lock as good as cheap locks on a window. The Showdown... !

There are different types of rails. If yours looks like mine you have the flushed rails. You would need to buy the foot kit from Thule to go with the cross bars.
