The majority of Thumbelina's predicaments are pretty much summed up with this: *"Doesn't anybody care what I think!?"* Tellingly, no one answers

Which might have been an interesting angle if Bluth had explored why nobody pays attention to what Thumbelina wants, and how she overcomes that, but instead he went for this vague "nothing is impossible with twoo wuv" thing.

I thought it was obvious why nobody cares about her thoughts, everyone in the movie objectifies her- even her family and friends. Look at her mom, she only wanted a daughter to dote on. Given a pre-made helpless person and she doesn't try to prepare her for the world, rather she just wants to keep her around so she can read her bedtime stories and tuck her in at night. When Thumbelina expresses discontentment her mom brushes it off and exits the situation. Thumbelina didn't even have a clue that winter existed and that it was only a passing season! So far as she was concerned, it was the apocalypse! It's obvious why she wallows in self pity, her perseverance and character was never nourished, people only liked her because she was "childlike" "beautiful" "had a great voice". The whole movie is her trying to gratify her self worth based on what other people think of her until she finally decides she's had enough of other people's opinion of her and runs away. I actually like Jacquimo, as obnoxious as he is.. he's constantly being portrayed as someone you can't rely on and in consequence, his message is put to question. The scene when they find each other in the Mole's cave is so potent and couldn't exist without him. How many movies like this are there where the main character is in such pain that she doesn't want to hear the cotton-candy message of hope and is inconsolable? I wish that they had emphasized more of what made Cornelius different from the others besides his looks- but in his song, "let me be your wings"- functions as an explanation it's just not strong enough on its own. Let me be *your* wings. Let me take *you* where *you* want to go. Cornelius is literally the only person in the whole movie who even considers that Thumbelina might want something.

Poor Thumbelina's mother. She wanted a child so badly and is miraculously given one, only to have her for a grand total of ONE DAY before said child gets lost. And then Thumbelina marries the fairy prince, so even if her mother did eventually find out that she was safe, she's still right back where she started with an empty nest.

I was thinking over the plot the other day... - A bland female protagonist with a strange name is brought into a strange new environment and spends the rest of the movie trying to get back home - She is accompanied by a male animal-like creature who is capable of having wings - She is brought to several different people who all know each other and try to get her on their side or convince her to go through with a wedding she doesn’t want - She does nothing throughout the entire movie to affect her outcome and blindly follows orders DID "JUPITER ASCENDING" RIP OFF THIS MOVIE?

If so, it was by total accident. Thumbelina bombed at the box office making only $11.3 million on a $28 million budget and many who went to see it promptly left after seeing the Animaniacs short I'm Mad (the public internet was still in its infancy back then). Since this didn't do very well with the critics both at the time and today, I don't think the Wackowski siblings were thinking about Thumbelina when they wrote Jupiter Ascending.

Also as a little, blonde girl who was harrassed by many random men starting at a very young age, I found this movie quite comforting to show how weird, creepy men can get obsessed with young women and girls and that it is not the girls fault that it happens.

Aww. I'm sorry that happened to you. But I'm glad this movie taught you that valuable lesson. I hope that nobody in your life was actually blaming you for getting harassed by creepy men. Right? Cause I'm the same, though black. I was mercilessly bullied for being ugly and yet s**ually harassed by a lot of the same guys at school. And ever since I was 11 I've been an old man magnet. Almost every elderly black man who comes my way wants to get in bed with me and even some elderly white men surprisingly. My mom would give me a rough time for showing off too much cleavage because I was a young teenager but she never blamed me for being creeped on. She was often having to shield me from the hungry stares of grown me at age 11.

If they wanted to keep the “does your boyfriend think you’re ugly” scene, they could have at least changed the moral to something like “you have someone who loves you, who cares what other people think?” Or something better than “this mans opinion is the determining factor in your worth as a person”.

Fun fact: Don Bluth wanted Thumbelina being about searching youself. In the original script, she was offered several options that she could think and choose what she wants from her life. But the people rejected the script so he had to change it.
@kingandrewcecil348
@kingandrewcecil348 2 жыл бұрын
You got a point. The way you put it is that everyone else in Don Bluth and Gary Goldman's unit hated Don Bluth's original direction of Thumbelina which made her a much more proactive and independent character in the same vein of other Disney Renaissance heroines of the period such as Ariel from The Little Mermaid (1989), Belle from Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Jasmine from Aladdin (1992) and instead preferred to portray her as ludicrously weak, whiny and immature damsel-in-distress whose only purpose is to live happily ever after with her love interest Prince Cornelius and nothing else (in short, pretty much a corporate's short-sighted, oversimplified, misinterpreted and misrepresented point-of-view of what they think Disney Princesses like Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora and Ariel were like to them back in the day) just like in the final film, and Bluth had to change the script because of them, hence how we got this mess of a film. If anything, the film turned out this way because it isn't Bluth's own fault but it's his crew that ruined what could've been a more promising and better animated adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina.

Here's a fact. During the focus testing for this movie, the kids had negative reception. They did another focus test afterward with the Disney logo at the beginning, and the kids loved it. The distributor came to the conclusion that the only reason why the kids didn't like the movie to begin with was because it wasn't a Disney movie. Considering that flaw unavoidable, they released the movie anyway.

So it seems to me that for the kids who saw the focus test with the Disney logo at the beginning, they saw the logo and, already having positive feelings of association with Disney movies, were primed to like the movie in advance regardless of its merits and flaws compared to those that had no such primer? how to fix the movie: -1: cornelius, instead of being a prince, is perhaps a fairy that was born far from the veil of fairies (tragic event? idk) and is convinced he’s the ONLY fairy. -2: thumbelina, cornelius and jaquimo are all Established Friends and all Want something with the outside world (perhaps jaquimo was ThumbMom’s pet?) and all convince eachother that theyre all gonna set off for the outside world together in an act of Rebellion or something. also they FLY ON THE DAMN BIRD. -3: big scary event (storm, big spooky animal or what have you) happens and the three are all separated. -4: cornelius is frozen, jaquimo has his wing pierced like in the movie. -5: the whole mrs field mouse thing happens, and instead of trying to marry thumbelina off to the mole, the mole is some sort of tyrant that offers to grant her a way to become Big IF she finds the veil of the fairies for him bc mr mole insists she MUST be a fairy since she’s so tiny -6: jacquimo, who’s in the moles collection, wakes up and is all “uhh hey this dude sux lets SCRAM” like in the middle of the night and they try to escape, mole finds out, enter chase sequence that’s all i really got so far... its a shame how easy it couldve been to rewrite some things in the beginning and suddenly it’s set up to be adventure that gives the protagonist agency in the story and has the side characters (jaquimo, cornelius) have some sort of emotional stakes for the audience?? but yeah if anyone has ideas for how this could potentially end feel free to add on. im by no means a writer

True. Keep in mind that Judy Garland's incarnation of Dorothy Gale from MGM's The Wizard of Oz is only like 12-14 years old (despite that Judy Garland was 16 at the time of filming), hence explaining her childlike nature. And besides, despite her flaws this Dorothy is a much stronger and more active character (like when she defends her pet dog Toto from being taken away, stands up against the Cowardly Lion for picking on weaker animals when she first encounters him, and she even defeated the two Wicked Witches of Oz by herself albeit accidentally), has a personality, and she is nowhere near as frustratingly stupid and naive as Thumbelina.

@@nicholasdruce5346 Yeah, and not to mention instead of being directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, it would've instead be directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the directors of The Little Mermaid (1989) and Aladdin (1992); after all, those two directors did a fine job directing The Little Mermaid (which by co-incidence is an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story) and fixing the problems found in the original source material, such as changing the original tragic ending into a happier one and giving Ariel a more proactive and fleshed-out role in the story than in the book. If anything, Disney's The Little Mermaid taught us that following Hans Christian Andersen's stories very faithfully is a huge mistake since they aren't well-written for feature films and the only way to translate them into good and enjoyable animated feature films is to fix nearly all the problems found in the source materials.

I too think Marry the Mole isn’t that bad of a song. It’s the sound of Carol Channing’s singing that makes it seem awful at first glance but if you ever hear her sing Hello Dolly and Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend and compare them to their respective film adaptations’ actresses’ singing, you’ll see that the film versions sound much better.

Maybe it's because I used to watch this a lot as a child, I still really like a lot of things about this movie even if it's not perfect. I really like that Thumbelina went through character growth and found confidence in standing on her own two feet after having facing so many hardships and people using her. By the end of the movie you can tell she's not going to be manipulated by anyone anymore. I like the aisle part because visually it showed that she doesn't want a loveless marriage with the rich mole because she knows what true love felt like and she knew that real love is the only love worth having and even if Cornelius was dead she knew she deserved to be happy. I do kind of wish that the movie didn't end with Thumbelina magically getting wings just because I kind of like the idea of her confidence not needing a physical change to represent it. Plus it's kind of cute that Cornelius would be her wings and fly with her. But I do understand the idea of being rewarded for perseverance so it's not too inexcusable. Plus, the fact that she tells off everyone manipulating her and treating her like a trophy was a really cool thing to see. And even though I love her, Ariel didn't even get to pull off a strong moment of opposition to her villain in her own movie. That and it's cool that Jodi Benson got a lot more chance to sing as Thumbelina. "Soon" (and the Mother's reprise of "Soon") "Let Me Be Your Wings," and "Sun" are still very beautiful songs even if the "Thumbelina" song, "Marry the Mole" and "Yer Beautiful Baby" are bad (gotta admit I kinda think "Marry the Mole" is just bad enough for "so bad it's good")

Agree, she really had a good character. Shes been seeing these stories about people like her but doesnt even see them and her mom doesnt know if they truly exist or not so she can't say anything. So of course that makes Thumbelina ask questions as she does well will i find love then? Am i gonna just be alone? Then she does find someone and he dies to her knowledge, even if she knows now fairies exist gow is she gonna locate them and no one is listening to her and she gets the brute end of the world and shes done and decides she wont be manipulated anymore. Its good. I like the idea of her not getting wings but she does have her own fairie powers since her voice "brought" spring. Tho i agree its nice she earned her wings. I always assumed she took the form of her mom. A human kissed the flower so she was born "human". So when Cornelius kissed her she unlocked her wings from a fairies magic kiss.

I think her getting wings is more symbolic than anything else...after all, Cornelius sang "Let Me Be Your Wings" to show her that he would take care of her and do his best to make her dreams come true, but once she finally stood up for what she truly wanted, she earned her own wings as a symbol of taking control of her own life. She discovered that she could make her own dreams come true. And her dream was him. Now they are equal partners.

When I heard Don Bluth in an interview talk about the background of this movie and how rushed the script he wrote was, it started to make sense. The vibe I get from this movie is "needs another writing pass" with a dash of "Doesn't quite realize how certain Disney-type things actually work in successful Disney movies." I can see how it has its fans. The production quality is good, and some of the ideas are definitely there and show promise. It could have been a much better story that was also more faithful to its source material than most of these movies are. I also find it interesting that the most appealing bug character in a movie FULL of insects is the least anthropomorphized one that the prince rides around on.

Even if the way Ariel went about it wasn’t ethical or smart (liking going to a sea witch she knew was obviously evil and untrustworthy, and then giving up her voice in exchange for legs and a vagina), Ariel never gave up on her goal to be human. She persisted. Also, unlike Thumbelina, Ariel wasn’t a damsel in distress nor was she waiting for her prince to come. I feel like Hans Christian Anderson works CAN'T work as anything much more than fables unless you pull a Disney and basically just make a new story that was heavily inspired by the original. None of his characters are really that interesting, and the little mermaid is probably the most proactive one he has, and all she did was make the decision to sell her voice for legs and then the choice to die rather than kill her prince. They really aren't good choices for source material if you want to remain true to it.

It’s because they aren’t used to the way it sounds. Her renditions of Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend and Hello Dolly sound horrible if you listen to them literally right after hearing the film adaptations but it’s not the music or even the lyrics that sound off. Marry the Mole is probably one of the better songs in the movie when you think about it as Let Me Be Your Wings is a bit boring and trying too hard to be a Whole New World rip-off, On the Road is too weird, and every other song aside from Soon is irritating to listen to.

"Frozen" was much too far removed from "The Snow Queen"...Andersen had severe depression, so that's why many of his stories were about outsiders and sometimes not feeling like you belonged or finding where you do. However, Bluth also had "Beauty and the Beast" and "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" in development as well as "Dracula", but none of those saw the light of day and who knows if they will as he's trying to get back into features again? (BTW, both he and Henson conceded to Disney after they announced "Beauty and the Beast" was going to be their animated feature...but Golan Globus didn't back down...) As for better adaptations (And I actually liked this one), the one with Carrie Fisher is entertaining.

Anastasia is a wonderful film, equally as good as the Disney Renaissance films (all are good. Pocahontas only shows that a film doesn't have to historically accurate to be captivating and good, much like Braveheart during during the same year, and Hercules's only real flaws are an uneven climax and a resolution that brings up a lot of questions. The rest of the films, from Little Mermaid to Tarzan are all masterpieces). Don Bluth got his mojo back in spades, as 20th Century Fox did not restrict him and encouraged his dark intuition, and it paid off wonderfully. Titan AE had great promise, but Bluth wasn;t suited for t because he simply is not into sci-fi, and the studio rushed it to stave off bankruptcy. Here's hoping that the Dragon's Lair film will be great!

Guilty pleasure movie for me. I actually agree on most of your points: Thumbelina doesn't do much in her own film, she's acted on instead of acting out (not exactly a heroine to admire)--but as a romp from one event to the next it's still kind of fun and innocent. More a movie of interesting moments than plot based. I like the mariachi boat song and the frog's ridiculous designs. I like the beetle ball and how odd it is (Gilbert "singing" only contributes to this weirdness). I LIKE how completely self centered and tactless Mrs. Fieldmouse is, it's hilarious, particularly when they're playing off the marriage "I will" thing when the mole rat asks Fieldmouse to help. XD But all that being said I completely despise that stupid swallow and the little kid bug-whatevers. The mom's song should have been cut too, they completely drag down the pace of the film.

...Why did this even need an antagonist, yet alone four poorly thought out ones? Or a love interest? Tiny girl has a mishap that causes her to wind up a week or two from home at her walking speed. She has adventures while coming across traveling companions, along the way home, growing and developing independence over the course of the 90 minute running time. A classic Perilous Journey plot, which is a fairly tried and tested family friendly Man Vs Nature plotline - Animals of Farthing Wood, the first third of Watership Down (...OK, maybe not so family friendly but the BBFC gave it a U), Homeward Bound, hell - The Land Before Time before it got a bazillion crappy sequels, so it's not like the concept of making a perilous journey man vs nature (....Dinosaur vs nature?) film was alien to Bluth when he made this.

I helped backstage with it and most of the weird songs work better, as well as changing everything to do with the frogs. It's pretty good, I actually miss working it lmao. Edit: Can't believe I forgot this. Also it sets up Mr. Mole as the main villain early on, looking to marry Thumbalina so he can take over and destroy the forest. Speaking of protagonists... I did enjoy Frozen, it's my favorite of the modern Disney Princess movies, but I do think that the original story carried a wealth of potential that has yet to be tapped. The protagonist of The Snow Queen was arguably very proactive, a little girl setting out on a journey to rescue her friend, and while she did receive aid from several samaritan supporting characters, they were also interesting protagonists in their own right. Especially the Little Robber Girl! She would be a great sidekick in a fullblown animated feature! And yes, I know that there have been a few lower budget films based on the Snow Queen, but with the Disney treatment the sky's the limit. It's hard not to imagine what might have been.

Well... heck! If they're making a sequel, maybe there's still hope for something along those lines. I've read some surprisingly good fan fiction mixing the source material into Frozen's canon, with the magic mirror and the Robber Girl and such. Maybe she could be Elsa's romantic interest, make it a first for a Disney film. Maybe Anna's kids could be Gerda and Kai, or maybe it could be a prequel with the butler and the maid. And then there are all the animal sidekicks... the Field Crow, the Tame Crow, Bae the Reindeer... sky's the limit with source material like that. Which reminds me... apparently the original character of the Snow Queen was based on an opera singer. And now she's Idina Menzel. Sort of came full circle, in a way.

Don Bluth seems to have thought only toddlers were going to watch his movie. Bluth’s biggest mistake, however, was keeping this movie TRUE to the source material. If anyone, like myself, has actually read Thumbelina they’d know how badly this would have ended up as a movie. When you have a crappy source material and don’t even try to improve on it (hell even Twilight bothered to do it), you get a crappy movie based on an already crappy source material.

Better writing would improve the story quite a bit. I don’t think there’s anything incredibly wrong with most of the songs and I’m sure with a few tweaks the more irritating ones could become tolerable. Marry the Mole I don’t think is as awful as people claim as it is a good song and it isn’t sung off key or out of tempo. The problem I think everyone has with it is that they aren’t used to hearing Carol Channing sing. Carol always sounds terrible if you compare her renditions of Hello Dolly and Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend to their movie counterparts.

A bit of info: As far as I know Barry Manilow wrote two songs for this film. Let Me Be Your Wings and Beetle Ball. The rushed plot is the result of Bluth re writing the script over the course of two days and his studio being financed by an ad agency after going into liquidation. They wanted more characters to market, so Bluth and the staff had to create them after the story was finalized and retrofit them into the plot.
