Bruce Bernard Smith (born June 18, 1963) is a former American football defensive end for the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. He was a member of the Buffalo Bills teams that played in four consecutive Super Bowls as AFC champions. The holder of the NFL career record for quarterback sacks, Smith was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009, his first year of eligibility.[1]

You notice he didn't just run into ball carriers and try to knock them down with his momentum. He got both hands on them strategically and twisted so they'd fall and fall hard. Form tackling at its best, combined with intelligence, speed, and sheer malice. I lived in upstate NY during his reign and was privileged to see this guy on TV every weekend.

Bruce Smith was the best defensive end to ever play the game and the best defensive player I have ever seen. Not only was he a consistent sack machine year after year, but he could also stop the run like an all star linebacker would be expected to.

Never with the helmet. No intent to injure. Just do the job - better than anyone else - and do it cleanly.

Yes, he was a living legend. To be such the force he was while keeping it ALL clean with every hit. Bruce showed the world that a tackle is made safely or dangerously. Perfect form, leading with the shoulder and allowing the massive frame to do the work for him. A real life, walking, talking Torpedo! #78ForLife

Bruce Smith is my favorite NFL player ever and the greatest DE of all time. If you look back thru NFL history at all the truly great DE...Bruce Smith is the ONLY one who played the majority of his career in a 3-4 scheme. Reggie White, Deacon Jones, Gino Marchetti, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall and basically any other one I can think of played most or all of their careers in a 4-3 scheme. Imagine how many sacks Bruce would've had if he played in a 4-3 . He's already the NFL's all time sack leader and also made more tackles than any other DL in NFL history. In other words he was just as dominant stopping the run as he was rushing the QB

Correct! The main thing about Bruce was his incredible speed....he was able to constantly beat double teams and get sacks because of his quickness.... he had great speed on top of his strength

I recently watched an '86 Giants game and noticed Lawrence Taylor was dropping in coverage on about half of the passing plays. Imagine if LT was rushing every play.

In a way, it wasn't fair. Smith was a fitness fanatic. He weighed 300 pounds when drafted--and he wasn't fat. For his sophomore season, he lost another 20 pounds. He had to do this under a doctor's supervision to make sure he didn't get vitamin deficiencies. That turned out not to be enough, so he spent an offseason in a boxing camp, putting together an insane regimen that made his body a thing of awe. The only thing I didn't hear of him doing was using estim to increase his strength. Guess he didn't know Bruce Lee...thank God.

When Bruce was inducted into the Hall of Fame, one of his fellow inducties was Coach George Allen. Allen was introduced by Deacon Jones, and the induction was accepted by then Virginia Governor George Allen, the coach's son. Gov. Allen thanked Deacon for the introduction from "the greatest DE in football history." The Bills fans in the crowd started chanting "Bruuuuuce!" Gov. Allen quipped, "Bruce is OK. He's from Norfolk."

Bruce Smith was the best defensive lineman in the AFC. Reggie White was the best defensive lineman in the game during this time though.

Meh. Bruce was doing this as a 5tech and Reggie was a 4-3 true edge DE. Totally different positions and Bruce was still keeping pace sack wise.
@shred5
@shred5 5 жыл бұрын
Running backs would just run around Reggie White. Bruce Smith would chase them down -- and he played in a 3-4 defense where linebackers are supposed to be the run stoppers! Reggie White was a slightly better pass rusher though. Both of these guys were the best ends ever to play the game, but I give the edge to Bruce Smith overall.

White was good but Smith was better and if Bruce had played in the same system as white (4-3) he would have had another 50+ sack on his already all time NFL leading 200 sacks

Not so sure about that. Bruce was better against the run and a bit quicker than Reggie White. Plus Bruce Smith played in a 3-4 defense his whole time in Buffalo....A tougher defensive scheme for a pass rushing DE to flourish. Reggie White played in a 4-3 scheme in both Philly and Green Bay and played on better D-Line's than Bruce did. Reggie played with Jerome Brown and Clyde Simmons in Philly and Gilbert Brown and Sean Jones in GB
