I think it was just too expensive to produce. Shows like this have an extremely difficult time surviving in the modern American animation business model. This is why everyone should give the Netflix Voltron show a chance. If it does well, maybe we can see more slick and well-written animation like this show. The Netflix business model makes those cartoons possible.

after the crap heap that was Dragonball Evolution, i don't know if i'd want the Hollywood establishment going anywhere near the Thundercats. i was a kid back in the 80's when they first came out and even now at 39 yrs old i still watch the cartoon and have spent thousands on collecting the original merch so if they delivered a film as they did with DB : Evolution (which i don't know how they screwed that up! they had the perfect story and fan base but still crapped all over it) then i'd lose my shit! and might have to catch a case beating the sense into the writers\producers.

Well... even the original series first showed Liono as a teenager... sort of. I don't remember the specifics, but the first episode explained to some degree that he had the mind of a teenager but had the body of a fully aged 30 year old man - had something to do with his cryo-chamber failing or something. If I'm not mistaken, it showed him as a teenager at first, though.
