Honestly, Hogan showed a ton of on-screen charisma and presence, too bad his agent sucked at getting him the right gigs. He could've had a legit action-movie career.

For those who saw it or remember it, Thunder in Paradise was a decent tv action show for Hogan. Jack Lemmon's kid fouled it up with his wise-cracking that wasn't really all that funny. Hulk should've body slammed him right off of the show.

The problem with him having an action career would be the gunfights, there aren't many objects in the world that could give him cover. Bullets don't care how strong you are, and they love it if you are a big target.

There are certain qualities that make one a good actor. One of them is tone, the believability the emotion in their voice. The Hulkster has zilch here. He sounds like he's reading directly off a cue card. He got slightly better in later acting roles, but his movies, all of them, and the short-lived Thunder in Paradise tv show, were all truly horrible movies by any standard. Even from a position of credibility, they relied too much on campy, cheesy jokes, rather than substance, utilizing generic plots that had been seen many times before in film. Bottom line, Hulk Hogan is the biggest wrestler of all time, bigger than Austin, or the Rock(at least in the wrestling world), Flair, etc. - and he should've stayed in that realm. His acting gigs should have been ones akin to Arnold in Terminator - characters that are supposed to show a lack of emotion, and given few actual lines.

@SR71BBFLYER 9 жыл бұрын
David McGinnis Not sure.., I don't think so....The Rocky movies were based on a fight Ali had with Chuck Wepner.(Not based on Marciano as some believe) ALSO.., in 1976 I think it was..Ali fought a big 6'3" 240 lb Japanese wrestler. It was supposed to be for charity and Ali thought it would be faked but Inoke was all business and was really trying to take Ali out. Stallone I beleive took inspiration from that.
@RichardAston
@RichardAston 9 жыл бұрын
SR71BBFLYER Very good points made here, but the story I read in Ali's biography by Thomas Hauser was that the Japanese guy was shit-scared and didn't fight properly, and instead adopted a sort of crab-like scuttling posture and spent his entire time in the 'fight' kicking Ali's shins: Ali had to go to hospital to get multiple blood-clots in his legs treated. It was probably as farcical as the encounter in Rocky III.
@SR71BBFLYER
@SR71BBFLYER 9 жыл бұрын
Richard Aston LOL! Pretty close to the truth Richard. I saw the fight. The Japanese guy spent a lot of time on the floor trying to draw Ali into grappling with him. Ali even climbed the ropes at one point to avoid the leg kicks.

They also billed him bigger than he actually is in the film. In real life, Hogan was never 6'7" (WWF/WWE will always alter heights to make the superstars seem bigger than they are), he's about 6'4" at the most. However, in the film, they wanted him to appear to be 7 feet tall because in the first two films, Rocky was billed at 6'1" - however, Sylvester Stallone is about 5'9", so to maintain the illusion that Rocky was over 6 feet tall, they billed Hogan at 7'0".

I always found this scene too smart for its own good; on one hand they were trying to maintain kayfabe without exposing the fakery of pro wrestling. On the other, they tried to put over this idea that they just had a legitimate fight with outrageous pro-wrestling moments, such as the worked chairshots & bodyslams. They were trying to have their cake and eat it too, which just made the entire segment look even more hard to take seriously.

This scene will always rank as one of the Greatest and most realistic in movie history, featuring one of modern cinema's most beloved and venerated SUPER STARS (Stallone) vs one of its most versatile and illustrious thespians (Hogan). This scene was mind bending, and transcendental. I just had this out of body experience!

Ali vs Wepner 1976 inspired Stallone to write Rocky. Wepner being a rough, tough, white underdog going the distance with Ali is like Balboa going the distance with Creed. Balboa fighting awkwardly with no particular style, rugged, white, and the name "Rocky" refers to Marciano. But working in a slaughterhouse, pummelling hanging meat, running up the steps at Philly, and being as relentless and as tough as they come, refers to the man who gets little credit at all, (apart from a special guest appearance in the first movie), Smokin' Joe Frazier. Apparently a statue of Joe is now being made in Philadelphia.

"I'll break him in half like this!" I can't believe Thunderlips would actually kill Rocky just for a charity match. He probably would have if the referee didn't break it up and proclaim it was a draw.
