My autopilot broke with FlightChops, but I still needed to fly 7 hours home from Toronto. Oh, and I took Peter McKinnon and Matti Haapoja flying too.

8:12 THAT is one of the things that I love about aviation! Getting above the clouds and having some KICK ASS sunsets!!! So beautiful!

The first time I ever flew, it was a grey and rainy overcast departure at 6:15 AM. we climbed through the clouds and as soon as we broke through there to greet us was the most amazing sunrise I had ever seen in my life. It literally made my jaw drop, the way the sunlight made the cloud tops golden and seeing the mountains in the distance peaking through the clouds. It was stunning, and I will never forget that. I have the video of it on my channel.

That’s awesome! Question. Do you need an IFR rating to go above the clouds when it’s completely covered? Or when it’s scattered I thought a VFR pilot can go above the clouds.
@Kaipeternicolas
@Kaipeternicolas 6 жыл бұрын
+Midwest Off Grid no you don't as long as you find a hole to get above the cloud layer. You are good to go VFR as long as you're not IMC (clear of clouds).

This video was an editing masterpiece. The cuts, the order of the clips, the music, and the subject matter all blended together. I haven't flow in a while and I never got to fly with an autopilot but I can see how it would be missed. Well done.

Awesome video Matt, the views are so incredible! That's what makes flying so special, we are able to appreciate nature and everything around us from such a different level and dimension! That sunset through the cloud tops just makes the heart beat slow, jaw drop with a slight drool lol, then a nice grin and a deep breath, life is good! So happy that I get to enjoy flying more and more! Just did my long ifr xc last night and had a nice sunset landing over southern Rhode Island not quite as spectacular as yours tho! Safe skies and keep the videos coming!

I ferried a Jabiru 55/3J from Bundaberg Queensland to Orange New South Wales, no auto pilot and the plane is tiny. 6.9 hours of flying with stops at Chinchilla (overnight) then Goondiwindi (no fuel), Moree (fuel) then via Narrabri, Colah, Mudgee landing Orange. It was rough from Bundaberg to Chinchilla and Mudgee to Orange . I had bush fires, smoke haze and decreasing ceiling to deal with, one heck of a trip. All this solo....do it again in a heartbeat! Great video Matt.

Matt: You were finally flying in my neck-of-the-woods (S.E. Michigan). Through the past 20-years or so they've closed a LOT of small airports in this vicinity. Plymouth (Mettetal) is still there, of course, Livingston County, Troy (where I live) and maybe one more or so. However, general aviation has increased tremendously since all the airport closings. And that's certainly a great thing. Love your videos!!

When I was in the Navy I did a lot of flying with the Whidbey Island Navy Flying Club, often I would take the 172 from Whidbey up to Friday Harbor, so many times on the trip up I was greeted by beautiful sunsets like this shimmering over the strait of San Juan Dafuca, at the time it was a high water mark in my life. If someone has never experienced it first hand it is almost impossible to explain to them what it is like, although I think this video does a good job.

I had a job just after getting my commercial ticket - it involved flying a C172 and dropping rabies vaccines over forests. You’d do something like three 2.5-3hr long zig-zag tracks. No autopilot. The word ‘tedious’ is a very accurate description. Also- great video as always, the sunset was epic.

Hey Matt! Loved the video and the editing. Great job! What a beautiful sunset. If you could just put the music a bit down when you are speaking it would be great, it was a bit distracting and the sound of the engine is really appreciated. Anyway, I loved it! Keep it up!

Great Job with no autopilot...Matt...I lost mine in my 1998 A36 and after months of searching for the issue it turned out to be chaffed wire in the panel ‼️ Only with a magnifying glass did they locate the problem in Sacrament CA...20 minute fix...6 mos and $8000.‼️⁉️ I saw you in Sedona last month and yelled at you but too much Helicopter Noise and you did not hear me...😎

At 7:50 the amazing views and your musical selection - creating instant goosebumps! Please gather all your visual footage of these few minutes of that spectacular sunset and make them into a separate visual fireworks clip, maybe with some solo piano music, that would be fantastic. As much as I love the technical and operational aspects of flying, on top of that the freedom and visual impressions are just what is making it a totally unparalleled experience. I have once had similar views as a passenger many years ago flying Düsseldorf to Amsterdam on my way to Moscow during sunrise with a slow climbing and disgustingly loud turbo prop that never made it all the way up, spending most of the flight between cloud layers with colorful streams of sunlight breaking through - will never forget that. At 4:40 having a cemetery in front of the runway can be logistically ideal when things go terribly wrong :-). Regarding your autopilot, are you able to monitor the control signals from your navigation to the servos and feedback loop on a laptop with an interface card to locate what is actually creating this dysfunctionality?
