@@protorhinocerator142 And in the 2012 (and ongoing) Remake of Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers), they decided that - yes - Shock Cannons (Energy weapons) mounted in the old naval gun turrets is awesome, but let's not forget where we CAME FROM. In that version of the ship, her primary armament in those turrets is still the Shock Cannons, but the front 3 Turrets can STILL load SHELLS just in case they lose power from the main engines! Even drained of power, the Yamato can still fight with missiles and could still lob volkswagon sized SHELLS with the main guns! And sometimes this was actually the BETTER OPTION. Shock cannons can't fire on ballistic arcs - but the shells CAN and fire over the horizon on a planetary surface!

Yes, there are lots of little wars and the U.S. either getting involved too often or not often enough, depending on your view, but no more big wars. Now we're facing our next big test and that's climate change. I'm 70 years old and starting to wonder if I've lived in a "golden age". The peace between nations after WW II, and an angry planet now.

I remember talking to my relatives when they were still alive. As they grew near the end of their time(s) they spoke what the whisky, cigarettes, and beers consumed at the VFW, Legion, and AMVETS had held back. I listened, asked questions when I was allowed, and learned. Now when I see something like this, I take away what some like me take away. As a PhD in science, the nerd loved this. As a genetic descendent of WWII men who fought and gave their limbs (1) and lives (1- KIA/MIA still), ...I see men who fought like rabid dogs from hell, so we didn't have to live in the real one the Axis was trying to set up on the earth. I am a child of the Greatest Generation, I watched these men afterwards...FROM MY VIEWPPOINT, no one fought harder and lived under harsher conditions.

The devastating power, and fear that the old battlewagons had in a 9 shot broadside from the 16 inch guns of the Iowa class battleship, how it rattled on into modern wars with effect long after the so called demise of those ships after 1945. @@thomaszinser8714 A few Japanese planes were able to sink a large number of battleships at Pearl Harbour. One of them is still on the bottom today. What those old ships are good for is Naval Gunnery Support (NGS). Like we saw during Desert Storm. They sit back and launch either 16" shells or Tomahawks at ground troops, who simply don't have the range to respond.
@thomaszinser8714
@thomaszinser8714 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisbingley those ships were also not ready for combat, a number of them had faults with the waterproofing of the doors, and all but 2 of them were raised and saw service within a few years of that attack (one is still there, another was deemed to be not worth fixing due to being completely obsolete regardless). Not to mention, the attack profile of those planes is different than that of a conventional cruise missile. With Iowa and an ordinary cruise missile, you're looking at a ship where the armored area is large enough to keep the ship afloat, even if everywhere else is flooded, and you're looking at armor that can defend against the standard cruise missiles nowadays, because, well, they aren't designed to penetrate armor. Their armor certainly wasn't the main appeal, though, you're right about that.

In John Ringo's "Legend of the Aldenata" scifi space opera series, several old battleships are updated and brought into battle against an invading alien force. This scene, and the scenes of those ships raining down "shells the size of a volkswagen" on the enemy always brings a jubilant battle cry to my lips and tears to my eyes. My wife think's I'm crazy, but she'll never understand my love for and pride in our fighting men and women.

The US Navy has a history of attack while blaring this song on the flight deck. We retaliated for 9/11 on the USS Theodore Roosevelt to this. Someone hit play and then we launched everything we had, all F18s and F14s of all catapults, it was a sight.

I felt the same way 'Boats,' but frankly it was a fun bit of make believe to watch. The 'old timers' who appeared as ghosts might have were mostly Battleship Sailors who served in several ships, not just Missouri. One was wearing a USS North Carolina ballcap, that would make him a WWII veteran. Most of the others served in the four Iowa class ships primarily during the 1980s and 90s with a few who served during New Jersey's Vietnam cruise and earlier during the Korean War. Off hand, I think they probably taught the movie production kids a thing or two about seamanship in general and battleships in particular.
