When crafting a track, or delivering a performance, some artists are able to conjure two or three emotions at once. Turns out thuy has such skills; when she’s really on her game, the LA-based R&B singer imbues a tune with a variety of feelings that enrich the experience. In a flash she can come off as assured, nonchalant, poised, or vulnerable. It’s quite a feat, and it makes her new ‘girls like me don’t cry’ a must-hear. Adored by the singer’s ever-growing audience, tracks such as “trust” and “playing tricks” follow the success of “universe” and “chances” from last year’s ‘i hope u see this’ debut. A Vietnamese heritage and Bay Area background enhance a cosmopolitan confidence, and with a vocal agility that conjures Ariana Grande, thuy has numerous ways of bringing lyrics to life. Like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, pop icons she grew up idolizing, her performances are unique yet natural - she truly communicates with her listeners. She’s felt this power in herself for years; early on, her “Hands On Me” took top honors at a regional radio show’s talent contest, and her yen to be a performer started to take hold. But a life in music is risky to say the least, one reason why this well-rounded dreamer went to school, walked away with a degree in medicine, and took a job at Stanford. That pleased her parents, but the itch to create never fully left her, and little by little she returned to music with a parade of individual tracks, each one catchier than the previous. A few years ago, “All Night Long” went viral and thuy became a thing for sure. It’s been a steady progression since, and proud of her heritage, she’s also become a vocal advocate for the AAPI community.
