This new 50mm collapsible lens from Thypoch took me by surprise. It was announced seemingly out of nowhere and has a uniquely vintage design. I wanted to find out if it was mostly a gimmick, or could hold up to modern optical standards.

This a great lens, I just wish they had focused on more unusual focal lengths first (such as compact wide angle lenses, which tend to be very expensive for vintage copies on the M or LTM mounts). I own three very good collapsible 50mm f/2 LTM lenses as it is, and my lens kit isn't that large (and 50mm isn't even my favorite focal length).

Great review. The best so far for this lens. I still can't decide whether I want a Leitz 5cm summicron collapsible or a 50 eureka for my M3 :) It's hard to find a summicron without defects, and here the thypoch is not only cheaper but also new glass

Very comprehensive review. Thank you. I know it is a demo version, but do you think the surface finish looks a bit rough? I’m just sitting here looking at my Leica IIIf with Elmar 50mm as comparison. The distance engraving of the old Elmar looks a cut above but then I’m only comparing to demo lens on screen. Since getting the Leica, I do like these collapsible lenses for Street and discrete
@pushingfilm
@pushingfilm Ай бұрын
Thanks! I didn't find it rough, personally. Unless you mean in the literal sense, as in having a "graininess"? If so, the coating does have a bit of texture to it. I don't currently have any old chrome Leica lenses for comparison, but I would assume there is naturally some difference there.
@shred3005
@shred3005 Ай бұрын
@@pushingfilm yes by rough I mean the texture of the finish seems quite ‘grainy’ in the images. I saw this also on another demo review too. To me that makes it look ‘cheaper’ than the lens is intended to be. That’s just my view having handled many lenses over the last 40 yrs. But of course one can’t tell until one has it in hand and can feel the quality of the engineering.

Thanks for the review, This looks good performer overall but in characterstic perspective (especially 'swirly' effect because you mentioned) I dont see much of that. By the way currently I own Noctilux 50mm f1.2 (re-issued version), LLL 1966 50mm f1.2, Summitar 50mm F2 (Hex blade), Meyer Optic Biotar 58mm F1.5 ii, Minolta 45mm F2.8 LTM.
@pushingfilm
@pushingfilm Ай бұрын
Glad you liked it. That's true, it is quite subtle compared to some lenses. It's easier to see at 10:43 next to my Sonnar. Even then, I think "swirling" is partially an illusion created by the cat-eye effect at the periphery. That sounds like a nice collection you have!

i'm debating between the aluminum or the brass for my MP. I need a small 50 I have the 35 voigtlander ultron V2 on there and I love it but the voigtlander 50 I have is too big. It renders photos beautifully but just too large for my liking and adds to the weight. Hashem what is your opinion on aluminim vs brass. I love brass myself but I'd like to know your thoughts.
@pushingfilm
@pushingfilm Ай бұрын
Tough choice! I'd probably get the aluminium if prioritising weight. It's much cheaper, and available sooner. Then, I could always sell/upgrade to the brass later. But so far, I've only handled the brass version... it feels great; well balanced with the body.
@shereemaebalangue1296

@@pushingfilm thanks Hashem. I put myself on the waitlist for the aluminum when it comes out but no one knows when they will actually get it, hmmmm. To be honest I really like the idea of brass BUT you are right; I can always upgrade if I want to when it comes out.

focus shift is typical in asymmetrical designs (such as sonnars and some old teles). But symmetrical planars/double gauss -like this_ are well controlled

Double gauss also exhibits focus shifts, not as much though.

Well, I tested for it and it was there! But yeah, not significant enough for me to worry. I would probably shift the focus more through my own movement/breathing 😅

The price of the brass version is pretty strange. If I want a vintage 50 f2 I would just fork an additional 100 and get an old Summicron with the added benefit of more value stability. The results of the lens are nice though.

@thedarkslide
@thedarkslide Ай бұрын
@@pushingfilm Leitz Summicron DR 50mm, I just love everything about it. It is bitingly sharp wide open, very impressive for such an old lens. The build quality is second to none. It has the most usable focus/distance scale for zone focusing out of any 50mm lens. It's only weakness is that you can't really use it on any of the digital Leica M bodies. The other top choice is the Summilux Asph., I got the version before the current one with the close focus range. It is such a magical lens. The box was damaged (not the lens), so I got a brand new copy for 10% off from my local Leica store. Other great 50mm lenses I have: Voigtlaender 50mm f1.2 - it's great. Not much to complain about other than its size. It can focus closer than the f1.0 from Voigtlaender and is much cheaper. Voigtlaender 50mm Apo Lanthar f2 - easily the sharpest lens out of all lenses I own. Leitz 50mm Elmar collapsible - smallest option I have for the M3 and MP I shoot with on film. It's sharp. But my copy didn't age that well. I got mine very cheap though. If I want to pocket my M3, that is what I am taking. Zeiss 45mm f2 Planar - I converted the G version to M mount using the Funleader heliocoid (which they are selling again, grab one while you can). I actually love the rendering of this lens a lot. Better than any of the Voigtlaenders, even the Apo (which is too clean). The extra 5mm less in focal length render a slightly wider field of view I enjoy for a lot of scenarios. Since it brings up the 50mm frame lines, I kind of treat it like a 50mm.

Thank you for reviewing. I like the effort you have put into it. There is however a big but: What I absolutely deteste and this is one reason why I HATE Chinese lens manufacturers: They have simply copied the industrial design of Leica. I am not a Leica fanboy but those Chinese companies (TT Artisan and all the others) rest on the archiovements of others. Today, with computers and stuff they still need to cpoy a design of others. This is one reason, why I will never buy a Chinese made lens. I would have tossed this lens back to China.

Many Leica 50mm f2 lenses of the era of the lens this is copying (Taylor Hobson 50mm F2 Anastigmat) up to and including the first Summicron, are also pretty swirly up close and wide open, so this is absolutely not some sort of characteristic of Chinese lenses.
