Yes 100% agree. All can give you stellar photos. Ultron wins for size but the other too are great for low light / film.

I picked up the Voigtlander 1.5… it’s exactly the type of lens I needed. I appreciate the lightweight news of it and its sharpness. Bravo Voigtlander on another fantastic lens. M mount shooters are fortunate to have so many options. - Grab a Leica lens for your favorite focal length and fill out the rest of the range with these fantastic third party options.

Except my fav focal length is 28. I’ve got a Summicron v1 with a option to get a Summilux by trading a CL w/18. Or, a new 28 Cron v3 with closer focus. The size may bother me, but I’m not a small lens seeker.

Brilliant! I am always impressed with your knowledge of the subject and the clear way you can explain it. Your photos for this video are just great. I know that these are the "keepers" out of a lot of shots. But your "keepers" are always good. You have the eye, son, you have the eye. You are the confluence of many skills and it is enjoyable to see you succeeding as you are. The downside is that you encourage my lens addiction. But I have resisted, again. But that Thypoch, . . . ;o)

For both B&W and colour as a walk around and travel lens it seems the Voigtlander 28/2 Ultron II is still the pick. Might consider Thypoch after they have substantially more performance and reliability history to assess. Light Lens Lab has a 28mm f2 ASPH in development. I’d expect that to price higher than the Voigtlander and Thypoch options though. Competition is good for all of us.

Thank you Matt ! Well.. I always preferred German or Japanese Lenses, but this time the Chinese one had my respect... It is important to say that the Voigtlander has a strong chromatic aberration, they could have spent a little more time to fix this instead of bringing a 2nd version of the same lens like they always do... The Thypoch Simera in turn has benefited from the floating elements design... I honestly found the design, the optical quality and price to be an incredible project for a completely "new brand" on the market... I wonder what the next lenses will be like.

I always check the review on your site. It's great to be able to download the samples. Matt i have a leica CL digital and want a lens similar to the TL 18mm f2.8 from leica but M mount. Im thinking about the voigtlander 21mm f3.5. What do you think? any other similar suggestions?

Used the Simera 28mm f1.4 today and I noticed that it overfocuses on maximum infinity!! On the Leica M, I found the sharpest infinity focus for the Simera is "just before infinity" -- meaning I have to dial back the lens from infinity to get it to be at the sharpest! There's a problem: Simera has an infinity lock pin! I can't turn the lens to infinity and then dial it back a bit like other (voigtlander) lenses because once the Simera reaches infinity, it will lock up! I must then push on the pin to unlock the lens if I want to dial back on the focus. Upon comparison with photos shot at infinity and "just before infinity", the photos at infinity is softer. This may explain why you found both the Voigtlander 28mm f1.5 Nokton and f2 Ultron to be sharper than the Simera 28mm (at infinity). I wonder if you dialed the Simera back a little from infinity, how will it compare with the VC at infinity? Will the Simera be just as good as the VC? I found a used VC 28mm f1.5 for $799. So at just $100 difference, the gap between the Nokton and Simera 28mm is almost negligible...

Thanks, yes agree it's annoying that many lenses now don't have a true infinity. I do try to get the sharpest point but if on a RF camera (vs SL) I'm limited by the RF and my eyesight. (EVF are good for this).

Hello Matt!!! I've been looking forward to this lens review and comparison. I'm in need of a really nice 28mm lens....and while I"m a HUGE fan of my Voighlanders (75mm, 50mm 1.0, Ultron 35mm, etc)....the more I see, hear and read about this Thypoch, the more tempted I am to get it. I also very much like to adapt my M lenses to other mirrorless cameras, right now I'm having fun with an older GFX50R, set pretty much permanently on the Xpan aspect ratio, and I'd like to have a 28mm to use there too. As for comparison to your "Q". I think that's kind of a night and day companions really. With that, you've really got an amazing Leica 28mm lens that is unique in the Leica line, has macro, AND....for the price Leica throws in a full camera too!! ;) I plan eventually to get one of those myself...either a Q2 used or a Q3...but, that's a bit lower on the "toy list" I have to save for. I think I might get this 28mm here soon...it really rounds out my M lens collection I think....and I LOVE the high blade count. I'm rambling...but THANK you for the comparison. Thypoch looks more contrasty than the other lenses but might be also due to warmth in the image? Nice for street I'm sure. In the end I guess any decent 28mm fast lens is a treat as I don't think there are as many :) Also squirrel photoshoot stole the show for me 😂

I'm very interested to try these Thypoch lenses on the new Blackmagic cinema camera; I really think that's their natural 'habitat'. The sample images on their website could quite easily have been lifted straight out of a movie shot on film 🙂

When using this lens, does the rangefinder patch perfectly align at infinity at the hard stop? I've had issues with other lenses like LLL where the focus patch stops short of reaching infinity.

Yes, hmm, LLL should be fine too, all mine have been OK. It's only normally some TTA and 7A cheaper lenses that need calibration out the box.

I tested my copy several times. It's at its sharpest when i push the Simera 28mm to "just before" the lock point. But if i am not careful and pushed it over the infinity lock, then it will over-focus (very slight blur). Annoyance because I can no longer just push it to the "end" like other VC lenses. And if locked, I will need an extra step to unlock an unfocused lens and 'dial it back'.

I own a Nikon Zf. I would like to see a Voigtlander 28mm lens for Z mount. I would prefer the 1.5, but I would take the Ultron as well. Currently I own 35 Color Skopar and waiting for the Z mount 40mm 1.2 - so I can say I like the experience.

From some other reviews it seems the purple fringing is so intense on the Voitlander I just don’t see the advantage of getting it over the Thyoch. I guess $300 more for a lighter lens and more fringing..?

Yes agreed, see my Voigtlander 28 1.5 video. Great for B&W but if colour is important you might want to skip it. The Ultron II is fine for CA too.

I ordered a used VC 28mm f1.5 (at $799 is much closer to the Thypoch Simera 28mm in cost). But the CA is OMG! I can't fully correct it in LR (sight purple still, perhaps a last 3-5%).

Yes, remember the Q cameras are 25-26mm not the stated 28mm so they suit people looking for a 25mm ish.

Thanks Kev! It's hard to compare a 1.4 to a 2.8 but Zeiss will usually beat most lenses for sharpness and pop. (Distagon vs 35mm etc).

Hi, Voigtlander make it confusing. So there is an old Ultron that used to own. See that video. They then released the v2 / II but made it available as Typ I & II so it's the vintage look new version if that makes sense. The key is to get the v2 for better performance. Typ I & II doesn't matter.

The vignetting is simply horrible!! Looks like my very cheap 35mm Petri wit the 35, 50 and 135 mm lens from 1978!! Can't see any andvantage in vignetting since 1978. Not what I like. Sorry. But only my very personal opinion. Thanks for yr video! Helps me decide 😅

Thanks! Yes I guess the optical design struggles are the same whether now or back in 1978.. ie. fast metal and glass lenses will often have vignetting.

Hi! Yes fair point. The Elmarit is a lot smaller too. (I have it) These are more for people looking for/ needing fast glass for low light. For Lisbon use the Elmarit! :)

You really seem to be losing any objective judgement. The Voigtländer 28/1.5 was sharper in the centre, sharper at the edge, has beautiful bokeh, and is smaller and lighter, at a slightly greater cost. What a rubbish and biased review!

Ha thanks, for real use the images will look similar. I like the small and light Voigtlander but I like the 0.4m MFD and 0.7m stop for film on the Thypoch. Both are great options so just pick what ticks your boxes.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComGood answer! Also, in the USA, the Voigtlander is more than “slightly” more expensive… it's $300 more for the aluminum-barrel version and $350 for the brass-barrel version. Heck, that's enough to buy SEVERAL rolls of film! 😂 Seriously, I'm still in a quandary as to which I should buy… I like the Nokton's more compact size and non-silly DOF scale, and I suspect I'd be able to notice the sharpness difference… but the 0.7m click stop IS a useful feature, and I enjoy the feeling of an extra $300 in my pocket as much as the next Yank cheapskate. So now what? Coin flip?
