Ah, THIS album. This came out my first semester of high school when I was just getting into trance and Tiësto, and I had mixed feelings about this for a LONG damn time. I could tell it sounded bad and I was disappointed he'd follow up Elements of Life and Just Be with something like this, but because it was Tiësto I basically tried to force myself to like it for a while. Eventually it became a sort of guilty pleasure nostalgia listen. I genuinely like the title track - it's basically the only trance we get on this album - and the pop cuts are weak but decent enough. Feel It In My Bones, I Am Strong, Here on Earth are genuinely good songs IMO, and Fresh Fruit is groovy. Louder Than Boom is a track I feel would work well on a dancefloor but can get grating in others context (I prefer the similar-sounding bonus track, Organized Chaos). I don't mind the more abrasive production honestly - it's used pretty well in some tracks and pretty poorly in others. Nowadays I rarely revisit this album, and I've swapped out some tracks for the extended trance mixes (yes, there is an extended mixes version of most of this album, including a boilerplate deadmau5-prog mix of Always Near). I really have to be in the mood for this album to enjoy it. Fun fact: the melody in the breakdown of "Knock You Out" was copied from a far, far better track of his and DWR's. "Somewhere Inside", done under the Allure alias and included on the sixth In Search of Sunrise, is an emotional trip and a fucking masterwork compared to this album, whose new asshole I have enjoyed watching you tear.

I discovered Tiesto when I heard his track Gold Rush in the soundtrack to the 2005 video game Wipeout Pure, and I figured he was some underground mid-2000s edm producer. I'm genuinely shocked that this is where his career went.

What a video! I'm gonna say this about Kaleidoscope: the second half works a lot better for me than the first one. I love big EDM music. The first half was boring. The title track sounds so overemotional, the only good thing about it is the part where the leads come in. The others are boring, but sometimes nice vocal-pop songs that aren't hard-hitting at all. The album only gets enjoyable for me once Fresh Fruit starts, but even that one has these ear-torturing sounds when the nice melody disappears for a bit. After that, the rest is some great music for the night. That is until Surrounded by Light appears right at the end, which is so tedious to listen to, and it's my least favorite Tiësto track EVER. So yeah, Kaleidoscope is my least favorite Tiësto album. Excited to hear you talk about all the featured producers and ghost-producers on ATCP. Oh, and his new collab with Vintage Culture just dropped today, it's a great dance track.

This is why i got waaaay more respect for Orjan Nilsen when he decided to get more experimental with his trance music with In My Opinion. Because Orjan is more colorful and not afraid to throw in some quirky bits with his distinct style. Btw, did you all know that he got completely slandered when he dropped "No Saint Out Of Me"? Like, people didn't even gave it a chance despite having some quite catchy tunes that have some solid production in it. Like, Orjan had previously dropped "Viking" which clearly showcased what sound he was aiming for. But yeah, Orjan > Tiesto these days for me.

As a big Tiësto fan (before he left Trance), I gotta agree with your review. I don't know in which category this abum belongs to honestly. Most songs here are not good... Personally I somewhat like Fresh Fruit cause its beginning kinda reminds me of his old tracks, but yeah... it's not Tiësto's best work. I would buy the CD tho😂... for me I'd give it a 5/10

Isn't The Art of Gore even worse? I mean, I haven't heard any of these (and I don't want to), but from fragments I've heard both are horrible but in #NEWGOREORDER the production sucks less (it's still bad, bud it doesn't sound unfinished), also there's no awful ridiculous autotune on his voice.

If you're gonna review the entire Tiesto albumography, you might as well include "Together" as well. Although it was marketed as an EP, it doesn't really fit the criteria and can generally just be classified as an album. It was released a year before "The London Sessions" and I'm sure it's probably better than "Oscilloscope" or whatever it's called.

I remember when you said somewhere that this album sucks. Now when I saw the score and remembered that you also said that Contact from ATB sucked... I am truly hoping it didn´t suck in the way this album did. Because honestly... I quite enjoy that album. :D
@TheWonkyAngle
@TheWonkyAngle 4 жыл бұрын
Contact was mostly just disappointing and a noticeable step down production-wise from ATB's other stuff, not a massive departure from his usual formulas that otherwise resulted in lots of good to great albums in the years prior and I can't imagine would get a score any lower than like a 4.7 or somewhere in the 5 range, idk. most trance sellouts don't suck THIS much, nor do most albums just in general

@Wodienfor
@Wodienfor Жыл бұрын
To be fair, the only good track for this album personally is I Will Be Hyuh... I mean Here, at least with the music video edit (maybe a radio edit?). I don't find it that bad, as I like the melody and the video as well, and I actually thought he's still going for his trance stuff back then. I was left disappointed by how his career went after Elements of Life when I listened to his recent stuff. Boom is still the worst offender. I was really looking forward to that album, only to be left disappointed. I did listen to Tiesto's other tracks in this album like Who Wants to Be Alone and Escape me, and I wasn't really pleased with it. The melody on the former track is fine, but I'm not a fan of the production and synth work used. I remember liking Escape Me for a while until I realized it's crappily produced dreck, and the way the CC sang the title like that kinda annoys me and I find it tedious to get through the track in one go. The production sounds generic. I prefer other singers that are present in his trance days like Kirsty Hawkshaw and Jes. Kirsty especially has a really good singing voice. I have heard of Louder Than Boom recently, and I thought it sounds worse. I haven't listened to the track from start to finish, as I skipped over some parts, but hoping to believe that what you said is true about that track, and holy crap, it's tedious. I'd rather listen to Elements of Life, Bright Morningstar, Suburban Train, Battleship Grey, or hell, even Adagio For Strings. I still miss his trance era, and I am aware that his VER/WEST (i think that's what that name is like) side project has some trance in it. It would've been nice if he were to go back to his trance routs on his main stage name. I may be late, but I felt like giving my thoughts on this.

My favorite Part of the 73 min runtime on this album is the first 16 seconds of “I will be here”. That it is one of the biggest build ups of disappointment that I can say in all honesty will remain engrained in my brain. I cannot remember what the rest of this album sounds like Nor do I want too. I remember that and Escape me for being the worst fucking song. 100% agree with your take. I feel the album and concept as a whole was just off putting. Not an enjoyable listening experience imo. Very forgettable tracks in contrast to his first 3 albums which had memorable ones like Love comes again, Break my fall, in my memory, just be, Battleship gray, elements of life etc. The fact that I can only recall 16 sec of a 73 min album as enjoyable I feel says it all. He does have newer stuff that’s been pretty decent but overall when listening through the rest of his library it’s a bumpy fucking road. Some good, most bad, few stand outs. I’d definitely say Jackie Chan is one of those few. Great review! Keep it up!

So I listened to this album finally. And I don´t think I hate it as much as you, but still this is not a good album. I mean there are so many WTF moments on this album, that I lost count. I would say I hate "A Town Called Paradise" a lot more because of how he was doing the same routine in every song over and over and over again. This one is at least kinda interesting and I liked some of the songs like the opening "Kaleidoscope" and "Fresh Fruit" and as guilty pleasure even "Century". But yes, this is bad.

The fact that this album and the next ones suck is because Tiesto stopped working with Dennis Waakop-Reijers, who ghost-produced every album. Tiesto is probably a good DJ, but he can't compose for shit. All he does is deliver 'ideas', and Waakop or whatever producer he's working with now creates all the music.
@TheWonkyAngle
@TheWonkyAngle 2 жыл бұрын
well, almost. Waakop produced this album in its entirety as well so he also bears some blame for Tiesto's dropoff lmao

it sort of makes me think he doesn't actually produce the vast majority of his tracks, that he is just a face and name for the music. Don't get me wrong, he's a talented DJ and it shows in his live sets, that is what he's good at. those magik trance mix albums from the 90s are some of his best work. Even his trance studio albums weren't fully done by him. Ghost producer or not I don't really think he's ever had the ability to make music souly on his own.

Stefan Fortig the only memorable track to me is let's go. I much prefer his earlier industrial style trance rather than just straight up pop.
