I cannot overstate this enough. Us Americans seriously lack hip and ankle mobility due to lifestyle- driving, sitting at desks, the type of sports we like to play. I was actually coached against deep squatting, as are many of us when we’re young. And our proportions are not genetically as gifted for this type of sport. Tight joints is systematically the hand we’re dealt in life 😭. I don’t even Oly lift because my body isn’t prepped for it at all, though I squat well and deadlift heavy. Great video I learned so much that I can do to work up to it.

One of the reasons why athletes have high hips in the starting position is simply due to them not having as short femurs and longer torsos as most the Chinese lifters. Most of the time its a simple case of restrictions due to anatomy. Everyone finds some way to adapt to feel as comfortable as possible.

Now I understand why Asian squat is a tricky thing to some western people. They all lack of ankle mobility.
@peterjenei16192 жыл бұрын
I don't know what the situation in the Far East is like, but in Europe and America many people struggle with foot problems due to wearing shoes that are desinged bad. I also developed flat feet during the years which made me impossible to lift with proper form. As I'm working on it my technique became better, but it is still far from being good.

yeah a lot of western lifters have an issue of butting raising too high from a Chinese pro lifter's view, and another is early arm engagement. too early
@briando77522 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the hips raising has to do with how popular powerlifting is? Like casual gym goers will do basic powerlifting lifts. Conventional deadlifts have reduced range of motion and hip raising. I think the arms are also correlated to early hips
@trtnec2 жыл бұрын
tons of Chinese lifters bend arms early too actually, albeit to a reasonable degree and without much change in degree before the third pull. Even Tian does (ironically), Lu does, and especially Shi/Yang.
@-TK-2 жыл бұрын
I think high hips in the start is just difference in technical model between different countries. Look at. Meso or gabriel sincrian. Both start with high hips and they have great position throughout the pull.
@briando77522 жыл бұрын
@@-TK- That's a great point, thanks for pointing them out to me. I feel like it's so hard to explain why some ppl do this or that: I'm sure so many top level lifters do many "incorrect" things in other coaches' eyes (those with different training methods).
@ChairmanRingo2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the arm issue depends on your personal ratios. If you happen to have relatively longer arms, a little arm bend helps you to find a good position on the thigh for contact. From a physics point of view, the reason to keep straight arms through contact is to ensure that all the force from triple extension goes into the bar not into your arms, so I think as long as you keep your arms locked through contact a bit of arm bend is fine. As someone above said, some of the Chinese lifters do this a bit. Imo the best example is Lasha, he bends his arms before contact and used this technique to do heaviest C&J ever. So it clearly can work for some people.

It's interesting when many times I see a western coach/lifter review people, their hips are lower than necessary for their body. I've seen many comment that higher hips would benefit them in the sense of their body structure that's more common in the west, that they have stronger posterior system than quads for example. This is a great video, thanks!
