Watch the video to have an understanding of the sand painting of Mandala in Tibet. If you are interested in traveling to Tibet, here: www.tibettravel.org/tibetan-a...
Tibet is known for its colorful artwork involving Buddhist deities, Buddha figures, and aspects of Buddhist philosophy. Anyone who is even remotely familiar with Tibetan culture will be familiar with one particular type of artwork- the Sand Mandala. A mandala is basically a spiritual symbol depicting the universe and the cosmos. It is generally a geometric pattern that represents the universe metaphorically.
Mandalas are very common in Tibetan culture where they represent various philosophies found in Tibetan Buddhism like the structure of the Universe, Wisdom, and Impermanence, Nature of Enlightenment, etc. Tibetan Mandalas are always made using colored sand hence the name the Sand Mandala. For a traveler visiting Tibet for the first time, understanding the significance and philosophy of Sand Mandalas will make the experience of seeing one, in reality, a profound one.
Artistic and Philosophical Carrier of Tibetan Buddhism:
Sand Mandalas or Dul-Tson-Kyil-Khor (Mandala of colored powders) as they are known in Tibetan, is an ancient art form of Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism has many colorful art forms like painting Thangkas, Butter sculptures, and Sand Mandalas. Like all the other art forms of Tibet, the sand mandala is associated with Buddhist culture and Buddhist philosophy.
Making of Sand Mandala:
Sand Mandalas have been in the Tibetan art culture for centuries. In the olden days, monks would use precious and semi-precious stones in place of colored sand. Nowadays using gemstones is not practical so monks use dyed sand. The sand is usually very dense so it doesn’t easily shatter if there is a wind or some disturbance while the mandala is being made.

Notice they have a method of deconstructing it. The immaterial is just as important as the material. Life make way for death, death make way for life. Impermanence is the cosmos, aka the only constant is change. The beautiful picture is still there, just piled up then scattered to the winds.

The sand is given away and cast in rivers as a blessing. It's not just a metaphor of impermanence and if you really think about it, it's actually about conservation of fundamental form -- Though the mandala is deconstructed the sand is carried by the river to the oceans and to all the shores of the world bringing the blessings with it.

same thing happens with the whoile Universe. It just unfolded what was inside it, but some people see chaos instead of a sort of "disorganized order" o a "pre-state". In any case, I think chaos is in our imagination, and harmony surrounds us. The question is finding the order of the universe inside the idea of what our mind perceibe as chaos.

Its meaning we should know that as a view of buddism. It's compared our lives to Mandara, which is very similar to them, every human body fades away like the sands in it, nothing remains after that right away.

My dog just died at the young age of 6 months. He had already survived terrible health problems and was looking like he was going to have a full happy life. Everyone loved him and he was the nicest and sweetest one. But alas, he didn't survive his last sudden respiratory problem. Thinking of his life as a mandala has helped me a lot.

Wow absolutely stunning. I watched one at a college where they put the sand down with a metal pencil looking thing that was vibrated with another metal piece . I'm sorry I don't remember the name of it. But what I'm trying to say is it wasn't done by hand like this is. This is so much more intricate. Especially using their fingers to place the sand. Absolutely amazing
