How do you shoot at long range? Depending on the size of your target, the distance to that target and the atmospheric conditions at the time of firing on that target, there are a number of variables you will need to correct for IF you wish to score a clean 1st round hit. There are a number of ways that long range precision shooters use to address all the different variables to make long range shots. So, let us examine the different ways folks use to adjust fire when shooting at long ranges and examine their suitability at the various ranges at which they are most commonly employed.
Corrective techniques discussed in this video:
Point Blank Zero
S.W.A.G.
Calculated Hold-Off
Ballistic Drop Compensation (BDC) techniques
Detailed Ballistic Tables
CALC-FORMS
Handheld Ballistic Computers & phone apps.
Range Categories Discussed in this Video:
1. Close Range (Point Blank Range) - No holdover need to hit most targets, point blank zero is most common method of engagement. (typically 0 - 300 meters)
2. Medium Range - Where bullet drop needs to be corrected for, not quite far enough to warrant significant atmospheric corrections. (typically 300 - 600 meters)
3. Long Range - Where atmospheric corrections need to be applied to the bullet drop in order to hit the target. (typically 600 - 1000 meters)
4. Extreme Long Range - Where spin drift and Coriolis Effect begin to have a significant impact on POI. (typically 1,000+ meters)
Depending on your cartridge and load, the values of these range categories will vary. In order to have the best results, always adjust fire as precisely as you can.
Thank you for your donations to the Rex Reviews Project! We hope these videos continue to be a great help to you all.

The reason I go through these videos is to learn how to develop charts in case the grid melts down. It's the same reason I have a large library of books. Heck I still appreciate remembering how to do long division. When power sources are not available this knowledge can be the power that will help you to function. That's the reasoning behind me telling you to have a series of books published/printed for the Sniper 101. Like I've said before I would pay good money for such information in text.

Hey Rex, just thought I'd say thanks for all the great work you've put in on this series of videos. Over here in rainswept England it can be hard to get this sort of info, especially in the way you put it across. You have been a big influence on me, helping me cut thru the rubbish promises of advertising and steering me in the right direction regarding kit and methods. Can't wait for your next vid mate, keep 'em coming! That's a big two-thumbs-up from me and the guys I'm switching on to you :-)

Hi Rex, you seem to know about the firearm Industry in a very holistic way. Your very sharp and I watch your videos regulary. I even bought the US optics S-T 10 mil Gap with lit reticle in red. I had $1500.00 to spend on a scope, I took your advice and bought one. Not on a rifle yet I like it allot.Where were you educated, were you in military shooting? I have been shooting and loading for 40 yrs and you loose me with the hard words. I know what your saying, just not the way your saying it. Just wondered how a man your age attained so much info. I enjoy your videos because their one of the few that aren't case stuffers , city boys trying to appear smart on You Tube. I understand your ill , I will be praying for you and the family.

Rex is absolutely right: the latest electronic widgets are nice and can be put to good use, but they are no substitute for understanding the science behind what is going on and avoiding an over-dependence on technology, which may not always be available. This is very analogous to pilot training: the latest avionics with fancy electronic moving maps, course overlays, and the like are great tools for enhancing safety and situational awareness, but my instructors and checkride examiners would often turn off fancy widgets in the cockpit if they sensed I was over-relying on them, as I in turn did to my students to ensure they matured into safe and knowledgable aviators. As a rule: fundamentals first, then technological aids.

Your a Very Knowledgeable Dude Rex. However Ive watched this Video and Haven't walked away with "How to Calculate" a firing solution on a Variable Distant Object, All Ive seen and heard is that there is Different Cross Hairs and Scopes and each one has Variables on Determining Distance. Be Nice if you could pick a scope with either a Mil-Dot or a BDC Scope or something along that line and teach it, Were Not all Ex-Military and a Good Most of us are just Hunters looking for a Quick Refresher on a Fancy Scope that We just Picked Up. A 34 Minute Video on a Lesson in this would be very Helpful. Keep up the Good Work and I Loved that Bad Ass Shot you did on that Beer Can,That was an Awesome Shot!

Dear Rex, Thanks again for all of your work. As you were talking about the limitations of the ballistic calculators and their potential for failure at a crucial moment, you should have added the potential of an electromagnetic pulse, whether it be natural or manmade. The electronics could be rendered useless so ya better know how to do old school.

Hey tib I've been watching these videos for some time and have been wondering if it's possible to practice these techniques at much shorter ranges with rim fire rifes, due to where I live it is hard to find places to shoot at the distences talked about in these videos. And also because I'm currently lacking a centrefire rife appropriate for such shots thanks a lot

WOW !! Now we're getting into the good stuff !! I keep going back and looking at the earlier videos to keep polished up. That brings me to a question. Bandwidth is expensive for me living in the country. Have you considered putting all this on DVD's and (somehow) making them available? This is all such good stuff that I would love to have it in a format that I could index and be able to reference when necessary, rather than trying to find the correct video (usually by looking through a bunch of them). It gets expensive !!

I've been trying to find information on mathematics of ballistics to get an estimate of what a rifle can do. I feel it'd be nice in the field to be able to do the math out by hand if ballistic calculators fail, even if they aren't 100% accurate. I more or less want to get rounds close enough that if they miss BDC can easily be employed.

Hi Rex, thanks for the awesome series - I watched it almost all by now. At some point you mentioned you prefer ranging in meters and will later explain why, but I couldn't find this in the later videos. Can you please clarify it? PS I grew up in Europe, have a background in math and physics, and the metric system is my "default", but living in the USA I had to adjust.Also, all the best wishes for your health!
@werewolf6289
@werewolf6289 9 жыл бұрын
Since TiborasaurusRex hasn't replied yet, I will respond with what I assume the reason is. My thoughts are that the metric system is easier to work with when interpolating than the Imperial system. You will notice that he suggests setting the tables up in values that are easily divisible by 10 as they allow for quicker calculations of proportions/percentages when interpolating values that fall between those explicitly defined on the tables. I too have found this series to be very informative and look forward to putting these concepts to use in the near future. Best of luck to you!
@jobane2
@jobane2 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply :-) I think however that a table in yards or meters is equally easy to interpolate if set up similarly, hence my question and confusion still stands...
@SuperOpinion8ed
@SuperOpinion8ed 9 жыл бұрын
jobane2 You could make a table in hex or octal, cubits, leagues, or furlongs. Making the table and doing "half furlong" measurements isn't the issue. I'm guessing it still has to do with why base 10 makes sense to almost everything else we do. Quick: what's 10% of 1km? 100m? pretty easy. Quick: what's 10% of 1 mile. Uh...let's see. 1760 yards x .1 = 176 yards. or..Hmmm. 5280 feet so 528 feet. Quick: your mil dot scope has dots at .1mil. how big is .1 mil in yards (if 1 mil=1 yard)? uh...let's see. 36 inches in a yard so 3.6 inches. Who wants to work like that? If we can train our brain to see in metric, mils and meters is SO much easier. It's like the idea of being bilingual. They say when you can dream in another language, you're getting there. I had a dream the other night where I was talking in Spanish to my Mexican employee. I also have found myself counting in Spanish because he an I have to count a lot of things and it was funny when I found myself doing it without thinking, even when I wasn't talking with him. It takes us Westerners a lot of work to see that the car is parked 200m away or that my friend is 180cm tall. I still have to do the translation just like when I started speaking Spanish...think it in English...translate to Spanish. If we can "think in metric", the math gets a lot faster. Interestingly, our money is basically metric. Thank goodness we dont deal in pennies and pences and shillings and crowns anymore. We call it a "half dollar" but it's really .5 dollars, or 50% of 100. .01, .05, .10, .25, .50, 1.00 increments instead of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/12, etc. Even our car odometers are in miles and TENTHS of miles...now if they were just kilometers and tenths of kilometers it would make more cents (pun intended).

I think as a T Rex TEACHER of a ballistic dinosaur pack should be a little more responsible and remember the ice age may be coming. I do not want to end up as a fossil in the Smithsonian, while my teacher is off roaming around in California watching a younger species like whales or some mountainous areas in Europe. Big rocks in a circle I do not get it. What next for Heaven sakes Katmandu. Yeah he even went there to.
