I stopped watching many other HAM channels that often focus on selling me stuff I don’t want or getting me excited about stuff I don’t need. I like your channel because it’s a repository of useful information and a community for the criticality minded. Thank you for what you do here. Take care and 73.

Excellent recommendations. Good to note that a stubby doesn't give you much range. I think quite a few new hams expect a stubby antenna is going to be as effective as a whip.

I use this exact combination on my FT-70. I set the HT to lowest TX power then use it for talking into my digital hotspots and my VHF/UHF crossband base radio. Since the stubby is compromised for long distance communication the crossband radio allows me to get a lot of range with the HT and since I’m TXing low power I also get better battery life. Another benefit is I don’t have to sit at the radio to monitor it and pickup the hand mic to talk. I can be anywhere around my property and talk back to a hotspot or crossband with ease, all while using low power and not carrying a radio with a tall antenna. It’s a very convenient combination.

Thanks for this! I got around to testing this setup with the ABBREE AR 805 S stubby. So far Im pleased with it. I have yet to test reception at the extreme edges of the 50 acres (lowest power setting) but I will. BTW the squelch tail thing was not an issue for me. I have other radios that do the same thing. Actually I never gave it a thought. Looking forward to the next one.

good info! I think I will pick up this radio as it is less than $30 right now on Amazon and it will work with my Baofeng/Nagoya antenna collection. good antennas cost as much as these radios do so I didn't want to have to buy more tri-band and gmrs antennas

Very interesting comments, thank you for sharing. My question is about attaching a car-mount antenna such as having a window or mag mount then connecting to the TD H3 for in-car use. Maybe such a setup is not possible.

Good information, sir. I've got two TD-H3's and have been doing some antenna swapping trying to find a useable alternative to the included factory antenna, which are dismal in my opinion. I know that SWR's don't tell the whole story, but just relating my experience. I've tried both the NA-701 and NA-711 and both seem capable of hitting local repeaters consistently, but both with less-than-stellar SWR's - useable, mind you, (and far better than the factory antenna) but could be better. In fact, thus far, the antenna I pulled off an old Baofeng BF-F8HP gives *by far* the best balance of tx/receive performance and SWR reading. Go figure. I've purchased a couple of Baofeng replacement antennas and hope they'll perform as well. Supposed to be here today, so we'll see, though I remain highly skeptical, as consistency of production in these products seems to sketchy at best. As always, thanks much for sharing. Steve

I ordered the Diamond RH3 & adapter for my FT4XR just out of curiosity really. But as for other "snub nosed" antennas go, I'm a firm believer & user of Smiley Antennas. I have the 2 inch tuned for 465 mhz (GMRS) and can qso a ham repeater some 18-20 nautical miles away. For VHF I have a Smiley 3 inch tuned for 160 and it gets me through. Unfortunately they don't make any "dual band" antennas. But I don't have any problem carrying one or the other in my pocket. 73

Good video and have been wondering about antennas for this radio. Has anyone used a Nagoya Na-F30 30 inch Tactical Foldable Antenna for this radio? GMRS? I have a short one and a long antenna that came with but wanting to know if the one mentioned above would be better thx

I just bought a pair of these and it came with two sets of antennas. The first is similar to what you show, 6", and a second set of 15" antennas labeled VHF Airband, TD-771. Does this mean they're supplying a better antenna now, or do I still need your recommendation?

N00b here with probably a dumb question, but are antennas for these radios selected differently for GMRS and/or HAM? Would your best choice antenna for the TD-H3 work the same on a UV5G+?
@careybrown3776
@careybrown3776 Ай бұрын
Nagoya has one specific to GMRS. It’s the NA-771G. NA-771 is for Ham I have the TD-H8 and the 8 watt UV5R and the NA-771G works fine. You will have to change them out though depending on what frequencies your listening/transmitting on.

@@careybrown3776 Thanks. I am having issues with both H3s not having much in the way of tx/rx distances with a lot of static, whereas the UV5g+ and Retevis NR30 perform fantastic here at our ranch...both are clear 8-12 miles where the H3s barely make it 1/2 mile....kinda disappointed in the H3s at the moment

I’ve had much better luck with actual 1/4 wave flexible whips on HTs than any of the coiled up ones mentioned. Physics can’t be fooled. Try a Comet SMA24J on it. That’s what I have. It fits well and will give you much better range on both TX and RX.

I have a Signal Stick and a Diamond RH-77. The Signal Stick seems to receive better (a couple points higher on the S-meter), while the Diamond seems to transmit better (based on hitting repeaters the SS can’t). Has anybody else noticed this?

This is seen in a lot of antennas on all bands. I'm guessing in this case it's ground or lack thereof. Try a tiger tail and see if the performance isn't a lot more similar to each other & better than either without it.

I tried the H3 but the high power of 3.75 watts just didn't cut it. I then got an H8 and tried the Nagoya 701. It does not transmit as far as the stock Tidradio H8 antenna. The Abbree 771 is better than the Nagoya 771, but the Comet SMA-24J dominates over the Nagoya and Abbree. Forget about SWR, do a range test with all the antennas.
