Hammer corals are a great beginner LPS coral that has been one of the most popular stony corals in the hobby. I've been working on this video for a little while and was lucky enough to get some really nice ones to finish up the shooting. Hope you guys enjoy.

Love the video... very informative and gorgeous video footage. I find that euphyllia can also be sensitive to water nutrient levels. Stripping out too much phosphate and nitrate tends to make the polyps shorten and shrivel. I generally am careful with overskimming and using GFO on aquariums with big euphyllia populations. Happy reefing!

I did something even stupider by buying an elegance and a bubble coral only to watch them die (Alkalinity droped while I was away) :( But then a month after fixing my alkalinity issues, I bought a hammer and it's been doing great! So a Hammer coral is a good start.

Great video! I’ve gotten a purple tip hammer to eat with a lot of success. I thaw out mysis in a little bit of saltwater in a small Tupperware container then pinch the shrimp with my finger tips and manually put it in the tank to feed fish. I kill the flow then use the water with the tiny concentrated shrimp particles and target feed my coral with it, sometimes I’ll mix in a little bit of reed roids, I’ve had great success and I figure it’s easier for the coral to digest since the pieces are so tiny, I’ve had great success from feeding this to Zoas to lps to SPS. Maybe you can try it and get back to me with your opinion, hopefully it helps!

I've had a hammer coral for almost a year and it's been doing great! The last week and a half though it's been retracted and not looking happy. The only thing i can see that is different is that it clearly has two heads versus before when it had one head when it was a tiny frag. It hasn't melted away, just been looking unhappy for the last week or two. Water is great. Nitrates are at or near zero. Temp at 78 deg. F. Salinity 1.26.etc. Would like your input, sir! Love the videos, keep them up!

Just heard the end of the video and i tried a water change and i replaced my carbon filter with a new Chemi Pure Blue media about 4 days ago and it's still in the same state. I don't see signs of brown jelly, or flat worms. The only difference is the very visible new head. When it splits will it be retracted for a while until it recovers from the splitting?

I ran across some hammers that had been in St. Jude children hospital. They were humongous l, I mean big, colossal, gigantic! There aquarium cracked and they sold all of the coral for very cheap. I had hammers with long white stems that filled my tank. We’ll leave it up to me, I poured salt directly in my reef tank and all the flesh bailed out. I’ve been in the hobby barely over a year and I swear I’ve some costly mistakes. Way over $5k easily… but I have learned from those mistakes and I love our hobby🪸

You mentioned running activated carbon towards the end of the video to combat potential issues. Do you always run carbon in your tanks, or just when you notice something that would warrant it?
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 3 жыл бұрын
We run carbon infrequently but that is mainly because our systems are very large and the cost of maintaining large carbon filters in both material and labor would be a little excessive. Plenty of hobbyists run carbon 24/7 on their aquariums and it too is fine.

Polyp bailout can happen if the coral is really unhappy with something. It is not too common, but does occur. I would check water chemistry, especially nitrates.

Ash Greninja MLG pro gamer yes they are in the lps group, dosing is only necesary case by case, testing your water for calcium and kh is important, if you see either droping in count then dosing is necesary to keep the levels stable.. calcium and alk is used mostly when coral is growing

You are super informative but to say a clownfish 'hosts' a coral is wrong. Or a clownfish to host anything other than parasites etc. The coral is the host to the clownfish. When you invite people to your home for dinner are they being the host to you?
