Alright, you’ve heard me sing my praises for the Berkey Water Filter, but after receiving some opinionated comments about the Berkey on my videos, I decided I needed to know if it actually was making our water better for us.
I sent 3 samples out to an independent laboratory to test my water. First, directly from the wellhead, second after it had been through our whole house filtration system and into the kitchen faucet and lastly - after filtering through the Berkey Water Filter. I’m going to be completely transparent and share the process, my results and finally what I think about the Berkey after seeing it all.

I was just ordering my big Berkey with 2 extra filters and a stainless steel spigot when I suddenly remembered watching these videos and seeing a discount code offered at the end. I'm new to ordering things online but it was as simple as typing in TIDBITS and suddenly around 30 bucks was simply taken off the total charge to my card! 30 bucks is 30 bucks, and I'll take it! The problem with Berkey is that it’s not tested to the claims they make. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, but the filters should probably be changed well before their claimed use.

You are absolutely correct. I just watched a video breaking down the Berky filter claims. The independent lab they list that did their testing admits that they only tested all contaminants up to 200 gallons and lead up to 2000 gallons. Yet Berky claims each filter cleans 99.9% of all contaminants up to 3,000 gallons. Totally misleading and a rip off

Lucky you to have high Lithium. Bet everybody in your house is super relaxed. Plus it greatly helps your body process B12 to get it into your brain. I use my Berkey on city water with the Florida filter. I finally decided on it because I wanted something that is transportable. Which worked out perfectly when I moved 4 years ago. I find if I drink water out of the Berkey, it's tasteless and flat. So sometimes I'll add some Redmond salt to give it a sweet flavor. My grandmother had a spring fed pond that was 45F year round. That water had incredible taste as it filtered up though limestone. It was so cool and delicious that as kids we would just run to the edge of the pond and put our faces in the water to get a drink. Millions of gallons flow through that pond daily so we never were concerned about contimants. My family offered the water to a bottling company, but the calcium was so high it would ruin their equipment. I'd have thought calcium water would be a huge marketing advantage. Lol.

I agree that the filters seem to last about half of the life they advertise before they get so junked up that it takes forever (6 hours) just to filter a gallon. Also it seems that recently berkey decided to charge like twice as much for their filters compared to pre-pandemic costs. You used to be able to get 2 replacement black filters for like $90, now they're $170 which is a crazy price increase.

Would be interesting to know how many gallons of water were previously run through your Berkey filter? None of these gravity filters are ever tested to determine how effective they are at their stated capacity. In other words if the manufacturer says they're good for 3,000 gallons, well they still remove as many contaminants at say 2000 gallons, as they did when they were new? Also would've been interesting to see how effective the Berkey would be filtering the water directly from the well.

They claim thousands of gallons, but the only testing Berkey has done has been about 200 gallons and then they extrapolate the results to say 3k gallons. You didn't mention how old your filter is or how much has gone through it. Also, the fact that you have another system that comes between your well and your Berkey means it doesn't have to do as much work as someone who used it as their frontline system. Berkey claims that testing is too expensive, but given the prices they're charging I would think they should have the money to pay for it. That's what makes me skeptical. There can be a big difference between how it works at 200 vs 2k gallons depending on the source of your water. I think you're on the right track with the testing. I think I would test every 500 gallons through the lifecycle of the filter to know how long it actually functions based on my water source.

heard there is a class action lawsuit against them in Cal. because of the same reason the claims they are making are not tested. I found it on utube ....I just got mine a few days ago and am returning it. I dont know how they can claim 2000 gal + especially at their prices when they dont have outside unbiased testing.

hello there, have you tested the water with a tester, do you know for how long does the filter is good? i don't trust anymore what the company says or other positive comments cause i have a tester and i found out that the tap water from where i live has a 321%chemicals, metals etc, and i have a ceramic dome filter with activated carbon that the water tested at 340%, 20% higher in chemicals, metals, etc, and before buying it i read the comments all were positives, so i went ahead and spend money on it, i also have a zero water that the water is zero% chemicals, but it doesn't last long, it last me 2 weeks and that is only for drinking water, i don't even use it for cooking, i am disappointed with the ceramic dome filter and i am looking for another filtration that it's really going to filter the water. the ceramic dome state that its good for 1,000 gallons of water, but why than the chemicals content is so high? also i have been using it for only 3 weeks and has not change the percentage of chemicals, i already clean it twice and still the same, i am trying to see for how long the Berkely filters will last, any information will be appreciated.

Many store bought purified waters actually have salt added for taste. My husbands grandpa was very upset to learn this when I mentioned it. He kept having swelling in his legs and didn't understand why. Once he changed brands it stopped. We have a Berkey just as a safe guard, we have water right off the mountain and noticed hard water deposits when we moved into the house. That is really the only reason we got it. Great video. I may try pro one filters just to try them out, I like the ceramic filter aspect and the NSF certifications for each contaminate.

My dentist advised me to add a couple shakes of HImalayan salt into the water before I drink it as the Berkey apparently filters out too many minerals and I try to remember to do this. A note about collecting water test samples. For best results use a metal faucet that has no threads. Flame the outer end of the faucet a bit with a small torch to kill incidental coliforms from touching the faucet or splash from washing hands or dishes. Open the container as close to the faucet as possible collect the sample close the container as quickly as possible. Keep your fingers away from the neck of the container and the inside of the lid. Don't lean over or get your head above the container because the least little bit can contaminate and change the results. Some water filters can become a source of contamination if bacteria collect in the filter and reproduce that can increase the number of coliform bacteria in your water sample. As for the Berkey water filters I have no idea of the effective lifespan. Elements in the filters particularly activated carbon can become overloaded with whatever things they collect a

With regards to greensand vs reverse osmosis at 10:30, I think there might have been some confusion. Tapscore was likely recommending a RO drinking water system only, which is all around the best option for ensuring you have purified drinking water. Since you say the local water guy said RO was overkill and led you to greensand, he was probably thinking whole house RO, which is usually reserved for wells with excessive TDS levels (>1500 ppm). In your case with TDS at 300, whole house RO is definitely overkill, but for drinking water it's a great option

@kicktree
@kicktree 9 ай бұрын
@@shilombaba Well actually the container was from ProOne back when the still called themselves ProPur I think. I got it in 2010. It is a 1.5 gallon. Its just me so I didn't need a big unit. It takes max 2 filters. I ended up with proones' prepper filters. They last about 1k gallons for the pair. 5" model. I would think that you would want to get the 9" for large tanks, but with this in mind: how much water do you anticipate filtering in a year. If it is much less than the life of the filter or filters combined, the I would opt for the 7". Cheaper and it's performance range may fit your 1 year usage better. I use one year lifespan, because I have used filters like these before. They occasional decapitate or fall apart after 18 months or so. It is cheaper to get filters close to the one year mark to avoid all that. Having said that, the cost difference isn't that much, but the idea of spending for new filters can bother some people and when the break before maximum filtering capacity... it may miff some folks. Another thought on size. You want as much of the filter as possible to remain in the reservoir of water for as long as possible. Nothing pissed me off more when my berkey filters were not utilizing the whole filter for almost half of the process. I hope I didn't confuse you with all of my thoughts.

I'm a long time user of Berkey. I bought my unit when I was living in rural Southern Minnesota -- home to a world of corn and soy and pig farms -- arsnic contamination as well a lead and pesticides were the big red flags. I was renting so I wasnted something effective but also portable -- I chose the Traveler. Since then I've moved. I now live in Northern California, still renting, but now I'm on city water that has so much clorine that sometimes it makes my eyes water when I turn on the tap. I've always been happy with the unit but lately I've wondered if it's still something I need to be doing. So. I've watched a number of water system reviews and your's is the best, most comprehensive and helpful I've seen! Thank You!! Great Advice!! It's clear what I need to do is get my water tested both from my Berkey and from my kitchen sink to get a clear idea of what I need

Wow! Thank you so much! I bought a Berkey because I’d heard they were the best. Then I watched a KZfaq video about how the Berkey doesn’t really test their water. They just give estimates. I think water needs to be good because that’s the one thing that my family & really all families use most. So now, I’m still wondering why your tests came back that your Berkey was pretty good, while others found through testing, that their Berkies were not filtering out some really bad things! So, do I need a filter for my whole house? A reverse osmosis filter?! Or, a Kangan?! So many questions! I’d better get started!!!

Thank you so very much for this clear analysis of your experience. I’ve been trying to convince my husband for years to move to using that system. He didn’t want the expense because we are on city water. However, this spring we are moving to our land in the country. We will be breaking ground for the well as soon as the frost allows. I grew up in the country and I know what well water is like. I’m sure we will need to look at reverse osmosis or some other whole house filtration method but I’ll probably be able to convince my husband to buy that system once he can taste the difference. I too am curious about the sodium levels. Thanks again for sharing.

Far more important to have a Berkey for city water IMHO. Once you eliminate that horrid chlorine smell from your water your taste buds will be so happy with you. Also eliminating all that fluoride is great too. And I bet you can find some other nasty stuff in your city water too. Cities claimsomeamazing water stats, but they always draw the water at the plant. They never test what happens after it travels for miles in decades old pipes. Or gets into your building which could have even older pipes like galvanized or copper with lead solder. Never trust city water.

Glad it was helpful Cynthia! We are right there with you on the hard rocky mountain water! In regards to your question on the filters - The Berkey website states they can last up to 3-4 years with regular use. I noticed our old ones not filtering well even after I cleaned them and they had more build up faster. It was about 3 year in, so that is when I replaced them. Tap Score also told me it was very important to follow the guidelines for the filters because it can quickly change if the filters are too old. They just won't keep everything out and in fact might introduce more bacteria. So I am sticking with about 3 years!

Thank you! Our city water often smells swampy or chloriney. We got a Berkey 5 years ago and love it. I don’t even do the red dye test much anymore because the water smells and tastes great. Fluoride isn’t added to our water so we don’t use fluoride filters. One quick shortcut to extend the time between cumbersome filter scrubbing: A quick re-priming often speeds it up and you don’t even have to take the filters off if you have a deep (laundry type) sink. Just pop the button on and prime each filter. Takes two minutes. (Note: One mistake you didn’t mention in your “10 mistakes” video - don’t over tighten the wing nuts on the filters. I stripped one once, which is why I don’t like to remove them).
