This is episode 1 of Tie Like a Pro! To start off this series we are taking a quick look into the basics of tying and thread control. Topics include proper hook placement, casting on, thread base, thread tension, spinning threads, pinch/set/and lock wraps, and different threads used for streamer tying.

I appreciate that you showed the thread breaking. For newer fly tyers, it can be frustrating when that happens. When it happens to an experienced tyer, it shows us that it can happen to anybody. There are a few KZfaqrs who show their mistakes, and how to fix them!

Just got a vise for Christmas. Trying to go slow and watch videos so I don’t learn bad techniques. I realize there is so much to learn. Appreciate you for your expertise and plan to learn more from you.

Hey Gunnar, I recon I'm a Bit late to the show. Just found your videos and am going through them one by one. I consider myself a novice tyer, though I've been tieing for myself for a couple years. Been tying jigs for crappie, and starting to stretch my wings a bit. Really enjoy your very informative videos. Being a pensioner

Really great info regardless of experience level. Great basics. I always learn from your videos. One point I may have missed: the bobbin you are using for streamer tying is a long Rite bobbin which allows more torque and you can adjust the tension mechanically vs by hand pressure. Thanks for doing these man. I’m a fan of your designs.

So, yes I'm a new tier. But I've been watching people tie flies my whole life (I'm 40 now) and I never understood the reason for having so many different colors of tying thread when it's all gonna be covered by material anyway. Floss, rib materials I understand, but I don't understand the importance of tying with all these colors if it's gonna get covered anyway. Right now I'm just using clear, nylon Walmart thread thats wicked strong and works great. I see no reason to tie with anything else. Advise?
