I think a lot of the reason San Junipero got so much hype at the time was because it was released when the “bury your gays” trope was in full force, so to then have an lgbt couple who get to spend eternity together BY dying was so fucking groundbreaking. It’s one of my fav eps but nowadays I can see how compared to a lot of other episodes that one is a lot more on the mundane scale.

i also think the reason it is so beloved to this day is because it remains as one of, if not the only, episode with a “happy” ending. and rightfully so. in a world where simply existing as a queer person is terrifying and sometimes even impossible, seeing such a hopeful episode on BLACK MIRROR of all shows really struck a chord in me, and i’m sure it did in so many other people.

@@scheibez The fact that people would say that a happy ending is good in a black mirror episode is why we get those nickolodeon episodes with miley cyrus. The San Junipero ep was one of the worst episodes in BM history after miley cyrus and the first Joane is awful. The whole fkn point of black mirror is to give us dark endings that stick with us and make us think about the dystopian and negative consequences of technology, the changes to our society, morals, behavior etc etc. Wanting a good episode just because it has lgbt character is so backwards. It's just as backwards as everyone that obsessively praises this episode because it's lgbt despite it being super bad and poorly written. The reason why it was so "well received" (only in certain circles). is because lgbt as a social issue is the thing that hollywood has decided to champion for the past decade. Before that it was racism. It's fine to champion social issues, but not when you start writing and producing garbage to virtue signal and prize bait like for example with the movie Crash.

Yeah it's a participation that people PAY for. The thing is I can see the thought process for how it would be set up. Don't think it ever would be, but the public outrage at crimes as awful as that make it kinda believable (eg: Lucy Letby). "Help us punish a child killer, you're totally in the right to do so." It's an appealing concept on an emotional level.

You’re pretty spot on about American ranking/grading. Since I was typically an A student (90-100%), I saw 8/10 as subpar, 7/10 as pretty bad, 6/10 as horrible, and anything less than 5/10 as completely abysmal. So if a slice of pizza was not very good but I didn’t get food poisoning, I’d probably rand it 6 or 7 because those are bad scores in my head.

National Anthem disturbed me deeply. Not so much the act of someone ****ing a pig (which is obviously disgusting enough all on its own) but more so the horrible effect something like that, realistic or not, would have on someones mental health. And the wife. And the entire world watching it live. I haven't watched the entire series yet, not sure if I ever will, but I did watch a couple of seasons and not a single episode managed to make me as sick as that first episode. I agree. I think a lot of people's takeaway from that episode is "people are more interested in watching a spectacle than they are in the Princess's wellbeing, isn't that awful" but I think the real horror is the whole "imagine being forced to knowingly humiliate yourself on a national scale". I think the show was right to have the PM be the main character so we could see his turmoil over it.

I think that the ending of Smithereens can be reasoned out by the reaction of the police captain. Her look of complete shock leads you to believe that the intern was killed, while her lack of urgency (by all involved, really) would lead you to believe that the kidnapper was shot as well. I think this is bolstered by the reaction of the sniper. She doesn't line up for shot after the fatal bullet, meaning the threat was neutralized. She also looks disappointed in the result, meaning the intern was killed.

i also rly liked white bear. the way it incorprated technology didn’t feel pretentious and it felt more original in what aspect of technology it chose to critique, which was the way it feeds this part of us thats bloodthirsty and Schadenfreude. stuff like true crime viewers comes to mind but also the reactions to viral vids of random people in public being recorded acting like assholes. The anger or Schadenfreude may be justified bc of what that person did but it can get to a point where youre just enabling the very worst parts of yourself and your behavior is just pure self gratification. you become a worse person for engaging in that behavior, and the way the internet is constantly feeding us content that keeps us angry it encourages that behavior to spiral out of control. the way her torment is set up as an amusement park where excited visitors all come and watch is reminiscent of public executions and lynchings of the past. the way that the instinctual desire to see retribution brings out unimaginable behavior from otherwise ordinary people

So true - I just finished re-reading The Martian Chronicles earlier this month (first time as an adult) and so much of it you can see in Black Mirror and other sci-fi media. I think it makes sense that not all episodes are groundbreaking or outstanding(or even very original}, and the tone isn't consistent, because its an anthology with each episode written by a super wide variety of people. even with some episodes that are clearly a reinterpretation of earlier works, some of the are at least told in an interesting way. and I think shows like this might invite more people into reading/consuming more scifi, hopefully.

I'll defend series 1-4 to my dying breath, even the Netflix transition people were retrospectively down on (Those are my favorites 💔) but the last two really make defending the show as a whole impossible. A friend introduced me to Inside No. 9 and I haven't looked back, I do consider it the smarter show now. THANK YOU for rating 'Joan is awful' an F. I've read people liking this episode and I just can't for the life of me understand _why_ My bf and I watched this one together and we were having a blast trashing it. I foresaw the whole "twist" in the literal beginning of the episode, while he foresaw the whole "terms and conditions"-bit. Also, as former law students (in Germany but still), the whole terms and conditions bit was so utterly unconvincing and unrealistic, it made us really mad! Like I don't know about law in the UK, US or any place other than Germany, but here, if you sign TOS, you still have certain rights. Something like in this episode would straight up be nullified for its violations of privacy. If you sign TOS here, you're legally entitled to expect certain things. Say, someone made you sign TOS and they said: "By signing these TOS, you're now required to buy a washing machine from me!", that'd be straight up nullified. Because you should not expect outlandish claims like these in your TOS. In such a case, the original contract would still be intact, but that one claim in the TOS wouldn't be. For this reason alone, 'Joan is awful', was an awfully dumb episode with nothing to say and no 'deeper meaning'

My takeaway from watching this show is similar to that of American horror story: it's a show that prioritizes edginess and shock value over telling a story, and it just happens to every once in a while land on something really good. And I think that's why you get that polarization of opinions bc to some people great moments justify a show being great, while others can't see it that way and aren't willing to deal with sifting through the worse parts. Don't come at me for my opinions on either of these shows pls

As someone who also has ADHD i completely relate to getting really annoyed/uneasy from long/slow speeches in shows. I also feel like this when a series/movies get stuck on something for too long or jokes getting dragged out too long. (altho i love Family guy, happens alot here) I forget what i was watching was even was about and it takes me completely out of it. I also agree with your ratings of Shut up and dance, USS Calister, Black museum, Hang the dj, Demon 79, Joan is awful and San Junipero. Only one i absolutely dont agree with is Beyond the sea, i personally barely knew Aaron Paul so i wasnt rating it high on that. It gave me a big plot twist, i constantly tried to predict and was scared my predictions were gonna come true(so it being predictable) but it didnt and a full turn around happened, it actually shocked me. On top of that the concept of having to work together in space with someone who murdered your wife and kid because you trusted them too much, very interesting in a fucked up way. This video was not controversial at all, your takes were very good and least annoying in catagory tierlists.

@@killthepandas. Yeah no sh. Are you even aware what prize bait is buddy? A decade or two ago it was stuff like Crash. Where they obsessively focused on racism but didn't actually bother to write good stories. The new trend / social issue that is all the rage is LGBT people. And the inclusion of them is often not done because the writer happened to have written LGBT characters but because Marketing people demand it, because reviewers and prize committees prioritize it for prizes and high scores, because it causes a lot of "engagement" with angsty lgbt teens posting left and right that it's the best thing ever and homohobes are going off about how it's the worst. Meanwhile no one cares that the episode is actually very poorly written, directed and full of plot holes. A good example is tlou's bill episode. Every single review said the same stuff.. tloug was a very poor remake of a video game story, all the parts with Joel and Ellie were horribly bad. The episode where the paranoid doomsday prepper and a random guy start having sex after 30 seconds was the best TV in the last decade, this show is a 10/10 .. (hilariously IGN or Kotaku don't remember still claimed that despite the Bill bait episode and the Ellie and Riley episode the show still wasn't inclusive because lgbt and bipoc people died in the show

The only straight people in the show I can remember aside from the sandman himself (which I wouldn't be surprised is written as bi) were evil. yet very few people cared.. you know why? Because despite all that nonsense, it was very well written. Likely because Neil Gaiman was actually involved in the project. And despite the character changes his good writing came to the forefront. My point is you can have lgbt inclusive stories, even those that push it down your throat and still have it be very well written and just generally well done. San Junipero was not. Neither was the Bill episode

@@3choblast3r4 idk about you but I considered the relationship between the main characters the story, with the tech elements in the background. And the relationship was handled exquisitely . As of your 'ok bruh ffs' comment -- that was unneeded, but my previous statement stands. Look at LGBT media with two women being the main pairing, or even gay-adjacent. Think about all the 'girl-on-girl but it's straight' kisses in medeia. It's almost always hyper-sexualised to appeal to a male audience. For example, Riverdale. This is not the case in San Junipero, which is why I said it was much needed -- young, queer girls need to have role models in media, and I think that this episode has done it well. As for you citing Gaiman, it's giving "I'm not homophobic, I have a gay friend!" And finally. People have opinions that are different to yours, Karen, learn to live with it lmao Edit: Gaiman

Also i loved “shut up and dance” too oh my god. Plus “exit music (for a film)” being played is the cherry on top. I also love the scene in the car where the bloke who cheated on his wife starts off kind like “oh we’ve all done it before” to our main character and then switches it up real quick. Its done very well.

40 minutes in and so far I'm agreeing with nearly all of Alizee's rankings, and it's been so satisfying to watch someone with the same opinions I have about these episodes. I knew I was cultured lol Edit: Ok, only ones I hard disagree with her on are the Miley Cyrus episode and the final episode involving the demon apocalypse thing. I HATED both of those episode. But overall, I'd say I agree with 90% of her takes in this video. Fun video!

@escapedscienceexperiement9824 Oh my gosh, thank you! Exactly, it felt so pretentious, fake deep, and self-important to me 😂 I actually had to re-watch the episode a second time as I fell asleep during the first viewing simply because it was so boring to me. I also completely agree that it seemed like the directors couldn't really settle on what exactly they wanted it to be, leaving the tone and pacing feeling all over the place to me in the end. I figured people liked it so much because they felt that the whole 'sacrificing people to save the world' was a fresh twist on the regular 'stopping the apocalypse' media trope. I could also see people enjoying the humor and characters as well, even if neither were personally my cup of tea. I'd love to hear why you think people seemed to love it so much, though! I enjoy comparing my perceptions to others because it's fun hearing what conclusions or points people reached that were different from mine and to see if perhaps my own perceptions might have been a bit off.

@@spudgun3268 Everyone really liked it but I kept being bothered about how the actors were good (especially the main duo) but the pacing and the plot seemed all over. was it a scary episode? was it a feel-good comedy? we'll never know and apperently the directors dont either 🤷 I think people like it because, it's very easy to digest. A lot of Black Mirror episodes are very much for casual tv viewers, and for people who want their things explained to them in a bite-sized manner. Like you have to think, but not very hard. The answer is right in front of you if you care, and that can make for very good tv since it requires minimum investment.

I was so into it it kept me so engaged just going on this journey with the character feeling his stress and then the fucking ENDING. just so good great writing. im also a fellow adhd haver so im automatically gonna rly enjoy something that can keep my attention THAT well.

the only big disagreement I have with this is I feel like enough credit wasn’t given to U.S.S. Callister as an examination of how horrible nerd/outcast culture can be to women, and how that’s exemplified by how women in sci-fi are written a lot of the time. I think that’s a conversation we have more commonly in 2023 when we talk about incels, but it was still pretty fresh in the mainstream when that episode came out - there are def parallels to IHNMAIMS, but I would’ve loved to hear you get more into that side of the episode because it’s one of my favs for that reason!

People are too hard on the latest season. Is it groundbreaking, life altering television? No. But it’s entertaining and thrilling and most episodes still manage to catch you off guard with how the story develops. I think people forget that Black Mirror was never as genius and complex, as we like to think it was. It’s literally been hit or miss from the start. The hits were few and far in between but when they hit, they hit it out of the park. E v e r y o t h e r Episode was ranging from average to forgettable and sometimes even completely void of any reason for the produced result to even exist. If anything the latest season is just more consistently okay to quite good. There is at least one blunder but no homerun, contrary to the previous instalments. I had a great time with the latest season because I never put blackmirror up on this pedestal of mind blowing writing that only the best and brightest would be able to appreciate. It’s literally just a show, a very good show with some exceptional episodes, that’s it.
