i think your affection for the I love you line in episode 7 makes you want it in the series, but it would have been wrong and clunky in that episode. Emma doesn’t tell Dex she loves him anywhere else in this show but in her final voicemail to him. They are literally her last words to him, and the only time we hear her say it (of course it’s assumed she’s said it off screen a billion times). But the fact that we’ve never heard it, that makes the series all the more devastating. it’s fantastic screenwriting, tbh.

Weirdly, I loved the 7th ep. so much. They break up, but the tension finally releases, they tell each other dark truth and... it's so satisfying. That's why I love the 5th and the 8th episodes as well. So much drama, tension, revelations of buried feelings. The finale is very special, because of the flashbacks. They are just killing, painful and beautiful when you know the whole story. Damn, the writing... Mr. Nicholls, you are a genius.

My favourite episodes are definitely when Emma and Dexter are together on screen but I like the context of where they are in their lives in the others. For laughs my favourite is episode 3 - the awful restaurant is so bad it’s funny. Episode 4 is cute and makes me smile a lot. Episode 7 is heartbreaking as they are so happy to see each other and Dex just ruins it with his behaviour. Their argument on the street - such brilliant acting, as is Ambika Mod’s in episode 8 when Emma fights with Ian. I love Tilly’s wedding, the way they are constantly aware of where the other one is at all times, the speech & then the maze. ❤ I can’t separate 12,13 & 14, although 14 broke me but I did smile at the ending. It was hopeful. In honesty I just loved it all!

I agree with your rankings, although I would have put the fight episode into S, as well. Beautiful acting from Leo and Ambika!

My no. 1 is Greece, followed by the first episode, then Paris and then the penultimate where we see their shared life before she dies. My absolute least favorite one was 9, Dex at Sylvie's, so cringe and unecessary to convey that her an her family weren't it. I loved the show, have seen it twice now. One thing bothered me immensly, the lack of a present family in Emma's life. We saw everyone's parents, Dex's, Sylvie's and even Tilly's, but Emma's were only mentioned briefly over the course of a 20 year time span? There was so much insight into Sylvie's family, why not into Emma's? Emma had been in love with Dex for 20 years and they not even once showed her speaking about it to her parents. And if Emma wasn't close with her parents, not that fond of her cultural background, that is also part of who she is, why not bring it up? Ian showed up on Emma's death anniversary at Dex's, but not Emma's parents? So, so disappointing, and frankly triggering for (some of) us (South) Asian diaspora "kids" who already feel like we have to hide our culture and upbringing (white wash ourselves) in the white countries we are living in and in biracial relationships and marriages.
