KishKishBish I’m not a social worker, but I work for an education nonprofit. I would recommend ongoing learning about topics like trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, trust-based relational intervention (TBRI). Trauma-Informed Care will help you understand how trauma can affect behavior and how to support someone who has experienced trauma. Motivational Interviewing will teach you techniques for communication, asking questions, etc. TBRI would help with intervening in high stress situations and de escalate. I would also recommend becoming informed about types of abuse, such as child abuse, human trafficking, etc and how to identify signs, effects, and how to be a supportive parent. If you are working with a nonprofit, they may offer these types of training. If not, I would urge you to contact social service agencies, particularly ones offering mental health support or even social work schools to find out where you can attend such trainings. Best wishes to you, b/c the world needs good foster parents!

I honestly couldn’t finish her autobiography! 🤦🏻‍♀️ She jokes about the shit that she went through, but I was like- that’s not funny, that’s horrible! I respect her ability to laugh at that shit now, I am definitely in awe of her strength because I know in a similar situation I would have fallen to pieces! BUT! I couldn’t help but see all the ways government could have done better. She was successful because of her grit, her hustle, her extraordinary outlook on life, but the odds were definitely stacked against her. Ugh, I just want to fix the distribution of opportunity in America. Right now, you have to be some kind of extraordinary to make it out of unfortunate circumstances. Mediocrity is a privilege only white people can enjoy. Before someone bites my head off, this concept was observed in a study I read that looked at high paying jobs where success could be directly measured in numbers - like gains earned by mutual funds or something financial like that (sorry, I don’t remember, I do science! 🤦🏻‍♀️) but they found that white men were promoted more quickly & with lower success ratings than their Black male counterparts who were only promoted when they had stats that were significantly better. There were several theories offered for why this might be, some related to implicit biases. I think the takeaway from this study is that at present minorities truly have to “work twice as hard to get half as far”. I’m glad a conversation is finally starting to happen now, but I wish more (white) people were willing to listen. 😕

I am right there with her on that. Even though I was lucky enough to have both parents in the home, they were never home because they was always at work. I got off the bus, my brother would leave to go to his job. And me at 11 was taking care of a months old baby, a one year old, and a 6 year old. It was very hard to take care of them, not just cooking, but keeping them entertained and trying to teach them things. And then on top of that, do my homework, try to study and make sure they wasn't burning the house down while I did it. Luckily i always paid attention in class and almost always half of the tests were based on what we were told in class, the other half was what we did for homework during the week. I think I did good enough for them but sometimes I really wonder and at times I feel like I failed. One sister went to an early college program and she had 2 associates degrees the same day she got her highschool diploma. Just yesterday she got her bachelors, she always listened to me when I told her how life is. Even to this day I guide her, advise her, and try to teach her the best I can. The one after me, well she listened but didnt listen when it came to ignoring others opinions of herself. She didnt listen when I told her which men to avoid, so her first car that she worked for her own self- destroyed because of the pos she let into her life. She went to college once, against what I told her. It was one of those phony online schools. Ended up they gave her a student loan, but she ordered books that never came. A laptop for non existent classes. After she realized what happened and had debt she couldn't pay back... she still doesn't listen when I try to tell her how it will end. The baby sister never listens to shit. Twists my words all the time. She wont look at me when she talks to me. She stares at her phone, and after she repeats herself for the 50th time, and I have repeated myself for thr 50th time she throws a baby ass fit and throws her brand new phone and busts the mf. And yet, when it comes to her mom always takes her side. I am always wrong no matter how hard I try. And she cant even have a conversation with me because as nice as I am she turns around and tells everyone else the complete opposite of what I said.. if I say hi to her, she busts out crying saying my tone of voice was hateful when I have to try with triple the effort with her. I dont understand..

My children had childlike visitations --- one was a cartoon on a broken tv that was unplugged. We were seperated many years growing up ...hostile relatives on both sides. When I was near to death, they would get nightmares. God communicates with his investments especially the new ones. They are grown up now.

We all are born with that gift and lose it due to us growing up and being told what is real and what’s not. I still remember some of the things I heard and saw as a kid that no ones believed me about.
