I love the Doctors dialogue about modern day yoga. It has been so diminished in its roots it is more repreentative of stretching, void of meditation, lacking grounding on earth, natural sunlight and air. Traditional Yogis are far and few between, but still offers a diluted form accessible to the normies and another fashionable trend that serves a purpose.

This was backed full with information. It took me days to get through because I would go back and take notes, get excited, and share it with a friend, and that sparked conversation. One of the most interesting notes from this podcast, as Manual Therapist, is the understanding of interoception and proprioception as it relates to Yoga. I want to put this into practice with my clients on the table!

This is a very rich discussion; really nuanced. I find Robert's research fascinating and it's rare to find a scientist who speculates so freely and recognises the value of cultural traditions we're only just starting to understand in a reductionist sense. Bouncing, load-bearing and CV make a great build on yoga.

Yes yes. Long held stretching has given me chronic inflammation and heating throughout the body. Including in the head.

Interesting point about the elasticity of collagen and bouncing. I need to get my rebounder out more often.

Very interesting and informative podcast. On the topic of cold water yoga stretch that Dr Schleip was thinking of researching, it would be an interesting one. Here in Ireland, Yoga, Sea Swimming and Sauna have become very popular as people feel it's beneficial for their mental health. It has that feel-good factor.

Thank you so much for this -- I've been practicing and teaching Yin Yoga since 2007 and have been integrating bouncing and shaking in recent years -- so helpful to hear what the latest and greatest is from the Godfather ;-)

Are you familiar with FeetUp yoga? As Dr Robert talk briefly shoulder weight. This is based in shoulder stand so not head stand but also so much more. I am a certified feetup yoga teacher and discovering more and more benefits. I am totally fascinated by your info on fascia 🙏🏽

I've noticed Dr. Schleip talks about "bouncing" a lot - does any of his research look at the jump-rope exercise specifically? I always think about jump-rope when he talks about elasticity of the collagen fibers...

LOOK UP - CHONG XIE JUMPING. You need to have a strongly braced ankle and isometric lock on the ankle and foot and toes and link the foot to the glutes. You can apply the same principles to jump rope work.

The bounce that Schleip is referring to is related to the elasticity of fascia....keeping springy tissue helps movement which in turn keeps you "pumping". after all your body is fluidic and needs to stay that way to be efficient.

Yoga Is basically for mind & consciousness, but I totally disagree with the western ideology of completely ignoring it’s ancient Indian roots and calling them out with English names rather than the original Sanskrit names . These names themselves are very profound and meaningful , one must not forget that connection and inspiration derived from nature as Indians did ! When one forgets the basis of yog it simply becomes a physical therapy exercise without any upgradation and evolution of the mind and consciousness! That’s where westerners fail and still keep coming back to the source : india . That’s the reason true and original gurus always came from India’s land and not from the west ! In the west they are simply reduced to yoga Teachers or practitioners and not gurus.

In this youTube, Barsch & Schleip did not "ignore" Yoga's Indian roots, they simply commented that "yoga" as practiced in the West includes Western gymnastics, which were incorporated into the yoga the West uses by Indians! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoga#Yoga_as_exercise supports their assertion. Religious / faith-based traditions have both valuable wisdoms and dangerous falsehoods. Fortunately, advances towards science-based understanding are not restricted to only some nations, and many Indians have led the advances that you deplore. Myself, I am profoundly grateful for Schleip's work in teasing out and sharing replicable wisdoms from various non-scientific traditions.

Well…quite controversial. Actually being more spiritual growth technique rather physical/postural one, Yoga has been changing. Initially Yoga didn’t actually required so much poses. It all cane from the West. The Yoga majority of us now practice is a combination of postural Western approach and a bit of ancient Yoga. I would probably differentiate and pick up a different naming fir the activity, but it gies as it does so far - modern Yoga.

59:50 "...if you do humming....then your nasal cavities produce 15 times more nitric oxide.." (important to health of blood vessels). Sing *HU* daily to build spiritual muscles, (and also benefit from the humming sound?). *HU* is said to be the most ancient mantra; non-denominational name for God; Love Song to God and also the Sound of Soul. Search how to sing *HU* .

This guy is so ignorant about the cultural roots of Yoga and how all these advanced postures that he claims came from Western gymnastics have actually been taught in Iyengar, Ashtanga and Hatha yoga for years and years. What a way of taking a traditional cultural practice and then trying to make it your own without giving credit where its due. Yoga is way more than stretching and meditation.

i wish they didn't go through the long list of achievements of this guy, every time he does an interview. waste time. And i feel she asks questions that take too long for her to say. Interviews need to be to the point.
