I am a career changer at 45. I was a chef for 25 years. I returned to school and finished by Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity. I was lucky enough to be in a situation where I could take off and finish my degree without any other major obligations. I am currently finishing up my first co-op and pursuing a full-time position in cyber.

52 years old and worked as product owner for different tech areas for the last 15+ years. I have just started back to school for a cybersecurity degree. I believe constant learning, challenges and staying active keep us going in life. Which is good because, it seems companies that have taken on the work from anywhere, no office, life balance has extended people's careers.

54 here and just started the journey towards Front-end Developer. Under no illusions of how ancient the 20-somethings will see me, but I'm doing this to help improve my conversations with developers I hire. My kids are grown and have their own lives, so it's time to stretch my mind in new directions. Plus I saw how my parents got left behind by tech. I don't want that to happen to me.

I was a tour guide in Africa until my late 40s, always played with code though and re-skilled myself during Covid and now work as a software developer. I would say, 50s are much easier than 30s and 40s in my experience because my kids are basically grown ups and so I have much, much more time.

56 yo here. I was in mobile development for the last 10 years. But I really wanted to get into data science. But I felt trapped. I could find no way to transition into it without taking a leap of faith. I wasn't about to quit my job to take a chance. I've got two kids in college. But then I got laid off in March. At this point, I decided I'm going all in on some kind of data science, data analytics type work. I wanted to use Python on a daily basis. It took me two months, but I finally landed a job as a data analyst. I'm learning all kinds of new stuff. I'm also back in school working on my Masters in Data Analytics. Without getting laid off, I'd probably still be miserable doing mobile development. I only wish I had taken the chance ten years ago. Take a chance.

45+ and I've been working in Manufacturing (auto) and (medical) for over 20+ years. I am starting a bootcamp next week for QA testing. I tried programming 5 years ago, however, to no avail. I want to work in tech, and this, for me, seems to be the best route. Working remote and having the freedom to still engage with my family is one of my motivations for this move. Plus, the salary doesn't hurt. 😁

I switched careers back in 2020 from engineering to medicine. I'm currently a 3rd year medical student. I had to take a heavier course load when I was studying engineering so that if I did decide on medical school later on I wouldn't need pre-med. I'm glad I did that.

Good businesses have diversity, in sex, genders, cultures, races and ages. One of the big problems with tech being so young adult orientated is that UX and Ui is heavily neglected when considering older populations. Everyone over 30 will have basically grown up with access to tech but that tech is designed by young people for young people. What happens when your hands loose moisture and touchscreens become harder to use? Or that 30 second window to enter the code you received by text just isn't long enough? Tech is a ticking time bomb we have a world increasingly reliant on digital tools but neglects to think about how age changes the abilities to use those tools. Tech will have to employ older people, to get that perspective otherwise it will loose access to the market and also its going to be very expensive for society to accommodate those excluded from digital access by design.

My conclusion according to this video is that age is only a small factor. Discipline, support, avalaible time and networking are essentials. About networking, it´s something that the most of the people forget about it. We spent years studying to only have acces to the 20% of the job offers. It´s a interesting topic for a video.

I agree that there are hardships in changing careers however , it depends on the factor of you switching within an industry that your already in and have been working in for two or more decades. You can make the transition easier if your relate the change to an area of expertise

It is not the first video from Tifanny about tech and ageism. I really enjoy this kind of video. I did crack the coding interview in one of the big tech after 15 years as an industrial Engineer. Coding is not new for me but the time i picked my career software was not like today. There are many profesionals frustated like I was since SWE was not an option before. It is not hard to identify reasons for a career change. In my old job, I was more motivated in creating VBA apps to make my work productive . I even developed iOS app that unfortunatelly was not compliant for them. So Industrial Engineering was much less motivated than Software Engineering. . I am the oldest in my team and I am SDE I but nobody cares. Everybody is focusing in solving problems. So this is true. It is a very hard decision. I did quit as a Senior Industrial Engineer in a major automaker and the path was longer than expected. I just did not give up because it was fun for me to practice leetcode and to develop side projects.

I am moving into tech from business. I am learning tech as a way to enhance the repertoire of tools through which I can be more productive. For, example, I know supply chain, e-commerce, etc. from the business point of view. Now I can give businesses a better tech consultancy about e-commerce, supply chain, etc. as I know what the strategic implications of the technology I recommend are for the company are, since I have a better view of both technical and business perspectives. I think instead of shifting careers altogether it is better to shift to complementary skills.

I have never had a linear path. I am lifelong learner and have had many pivots. How do you know age 18 what the world will look like in 5 or 10 years ? How do you know you will be good at something or even like it without testing it out first ? Kudos to people who have been at the same job in the same role for 20 years (and I know people who are perfectly content being a cog in the same machine for 20 years with no desire to learn anything new, because the money is too good). I know that’s not what I want. I was a scientist , then went on to get a professional degree and worked in the industry in a narrow field with limited opportunities . I saw the writing on the wall and now I am studying for a role in the tech industry. I have probably lost out on salaries for the time I spent in school . Some of my friends who went straight to work and have been in the same role for 20 years probably have made much more at this point. Because I enjoy new challenges , I feel like my life is also more rich with a diversity of experiences. There was a lady who was in my grad program and she was 65 and still learning to start a new direction in life .
