I build an aluminum boat a few years ago it's a one-man McKenzie style drift boat about eight and a half foot long I welded the whole thing with the Millermatic 211 and a spool gun it's my own design it was a lot of fun from making the paper model catching fish in the finished product now you're making me want to build a bigger one

For welding a hull, I will normally use a Mig welder with a spool gun. A machine that is pulse capable will really help reduce the burn through. Hope that helps. If your stuck with just a Tig machine, try changing the frequency, run hot and fast. Experiment, try all kinds of things until you figure out what works. Best of luck!

Did you clean off ALL the oxidisation, and then wire brush where you are welding with a STAINLESS STEEL wire brush that has not been used for any other metal. Also, very close fit up.

Sir, I am panning to build a boat with steel. Which type of welding is good? TIG or Stick Welding.? The guage of steel is going to be about an inch for the hull, the frame parts maybe a little thicker so that the frame is strong. Planning to get the frame parts moukded and hardened by press.

say I have never been able to find an explanation pf why AC vs. DC for aluminum. spoolguns are sold primarily on DC mig machines, but everyone says you need AC to tig aluminum. I know it is possible to tig aluminum on DC, but seems particularly difficult. Any idea what the difference os all about?
@gregepp3082
@gregepp3082 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! to be honest I never really questioned it, so this made me think. I do remember trying to weld aluminum with DC and it did nothing. I found this on the mill website and I think it explained it really well. Hope this helps! Cheers. To understand how balance control works, you first need to understand why aluminum and magnesium require an AC welding output. When exposed to air, these metals form an oxide layer that melts at a much higher temperature than the base metal. For example, aluminum oxide melts at about 3600 degree F, while aluminum melts at just 1200 degree F.
@SPANKmusicofficial
@SPANKmusicofficial 3 жыл бұрын
The current is jumping back and forth changing the direction of flow to penetrate the oxide layer on the aluminum. That’s a stupid way of describing it on my part but it made sense to me when I heard it said like that. Basically, instead of the current just trying to break in from the torch to the aluminum (through the hard ass oxide layer) it’s hitting it from both ends and really breaking down the layer and the base material.

Today I attempted to do TIG weld repairs on an old aluminum Jon boat using a Lincoln Precision TIG 225. Had a very difficult time! I switched from 1/8" pure tungsten to 1/16" tungsten. 50 amps. Very little progress. Admittedly I only have experience welding steel. Aluminum seems quite difficult. Do you have any tips?
@gregepp3082
@gregepp3082 Жыл бұрын
The tungsten is less important than making sure the material is totally clean. Grind, accestone, brush. Old aluminum will have baked in crud in it. 50aps AC will be way to low. Crank that up 150. If you have a foot pedal you can go higher (180 to start then back off the pedal) Try that let me know! Cheers.

Hi mate great video, I do own a tig welder and have gas but would have no idea where to start building a boat. I do have a 40 hp outboard in the shed. Where would I get the plans to build a boat like the awesome ones you've made please?

Hey mate! thanks for watching the vid. I would not recommend building a boat with just a tig welder. If you have seen one of my earlier vids you will know why. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdWBqLOWvKnMZWg.html I got the plans for this boat from metalboatkits .com If you are local I could weld up the hull for you. As I have a pulse mig machine (this is really what you need) You can always shoot me an email as well. Adventuremarinegreg@gmail.com Cheers! Greg

So I want to build 10 ft or so Jon aluminum boats. I have noticed that most of these boats made by the big guys seem to correspond to certain measurements. I would like to use 3 16 5052 sheeting but would like to avoid too much Welding or rivets. I have found only 6 by 10 sheets but I want to use 8 by 12 sheets but they seem to have to order them in and they cost an arm and a leg. I am in Canada. Any suggestions on this?
@gregepp3082
@gregepp3082 3 жыл бұрын
Really depend on what you're hoping to get out of a build. If you just want to boat to call your own. Just buy one, it will be cheaper and work better in the end. If you like building things more than using them then buy a design online and get a company like CMJ to router cut the parts for you. This will give you a fighting chance at your boat not being a tool waste of money the first go around. The fit has to be perfect for the welding to work at all. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching!
