Neat. I love the internet. I'm gonna buy several of these to fix my floor. It's been annoying me for months because my chair is constantly rotating to the right since it's sagged. Didn't realize I could fix it for a couple hundred bucks myself. I gotta make some concrete footers to mount them to as well. That'll be fun underneath my crawl space, but worth it.

I have the same issue - A-Frame 1965, they 'forgot' to place piers under the front wall, and now they are in the middle of beams, that have rotted due to the ends are under the deck (which they also forgot to put flashing to protect the beam) Goofy! So my front 2 - 8 ft sliding patio doors are sagging about an inch. Here is a good video clip from a basement with concrete floor. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJyhp9qCzN2xcXU.html

I bougth 7 J-S-100 jack posts from Home Depot. The package says it supports loads from 9100 to 19800 lbs from minimal to maximum extension. As a professional engineer, I can tell you that this load rating is LAUGHABLE. It's made of something like 14 gauge steel. I put about 1500 lbs of load on it at nearly full extension and it started to buckle. 9000+ lbs is a lie. Just looking at it will tell you that.

so which ones would you recommend? bottle jacks? and use some metal plate over the beam to eliminate too much pressure from the tip of bottle jack on the wood?

I need to temporarily support a raised deck while replacing the support posts. How can I use these jack posts if the cement patio below the deck is not level (i.e., it is slanted for drainage).

I guess I installed these upside-down, but they seem to be working fine.

I've seen them professionally installed "upside-down". It doesn't seem to really matter.

If the adjustment area is at the floor its more likely to get dirty or knocked. But its more accessible. I would think it would be best near the ceiling.

I have several of these trying to lift floor joists that are sagging (that were cut by the former owner), does it matter that the screw is on top (easier to adjust and get to) the forces would be about the same (the weight of the jack is a rounding error). If not then why not?

The question about whether to put the adjusting screw at the top or bottom is a good one. There are steel column mfg's who recommend putting it at the bottom in certain situations. However I decided to look at a more professional reference for this question when buying my home. I looked up the "October Home", report on inspecting adjustable steel columns. October Home is a home inspection company based in New York and serving a good portion of the New York City area. To read their report go to their web site at octoberhome.com scroll down the page to the heading "Building Science, Research and Information" then click on the topic, " How to inspect adjustable steel columns". Happy home hunting, and good luck!

One reason is that in some cases the bottom is covered in concrete when the floor is poured making the adjustment permanent and tamper proof. If this is not the case for what you are doing that reason does not apply in your situation, not sure if there are any other reasons though.

At the end of the video, he says you can reverse them if you're able to reach the adjustment nut. Some of these can be 10 feet or more tall.
