Yeah, until you look at the other options...Mitee Bites are about $10 more per clamp, and Legacy's are about the same, set of two with two fixed stops for $119. These are stainless, the Legacy clamps are aluminum and the Mitee Bites are, at least the clamping edge, hardened steel. They're all about the same price, but at that price I'd expect these to provide similar clamping force to the alternatives.

I appreciate the observation from another obviously mechanically-minded individual. Agreed that the static bolts would best be placed closest to the movable jaw to lessen the flexing and maximize available clamping force. This reminds me of the many, MANY bad examples I've seen of people using hold-down clamps with the bolt towards the heel end of the clamp rather than the toe end where the clamping force is intended to be placed. In this case, I don't believe there is any substantial loss of holding power. The upward flexing of the clamp base will place additional downward preload on the clamping action, so perhaps this flex is not a pure loss (probably not part of the design-intent though). As long as people work within the scope of the design and materials, and don't continually over-torque the movable jaw so as to create a permanent bend in the clamp base.

Maybe the flexing of the clamp isn't a pure loss, and maybe one should look at the scope of their application. I agree. But there are more uncertainties like the holding force of the static bolt and the material and surface area it's holding on to. This flexing we're talking about is an unpredictable risk when clamping stuff. It can come loose because the flexing force could bend or deform other parts. And in my experience not being able to eliminate this can cost you your workpiece, or worse, your tools. Insufficient or bad clamping your workpiece is not done.

I would like te see a picture of those, but if you don't want because of I.P. then I respect that.

The longer that slot is, the weaker the clamp is. Better to use the Gator Tooth clamps as a variable stop to hold your workpiece within range of the Tiger Claw.

Anyone who has done machining for a living can appreciate the value in these. Hobbiests have become programmed to think stuff like this should carry a $10 pricetag with free shipping from China.

@@billblades9195 I'd argue that these are not really machinist grade clamps. The don't have the accuracy or repeatability to be considered by anyone doing this for a living (other than maybe making signs) would go for an actual vise

@@gilcd85 Agreed they are not truly 'machinist grade'. My comment was not to suggest that, but an understanding of the various setups & machining that go into them. This type of clamp is not designed for repeatability or accuracy any more than a C-clamp is. Accuracy & repeatability come from hard-stops used in conjunction with these.

You do realize that you can use these perfectly well on an X-Carve, right? I made the same mistake and bought an X-Carve myself, but have modified it to the extent that there's only 3 OEM parts remaining on it. Still, would have been cheaper to buy a Shapeoko.

@@billblades9195 X-Carve has M5 threaded inserts. One would need to determine how well an M5 socket screw would work with these work holdings. The big picture, however, is that Carbide 3D seems to continuously innovate and grab market share with these type of offerings and with contributors, like Winston Moy, providing insightful content on a consistent basis. Meanwhile Inventables has seem to regress over the last few years.

@@bernardtarver Oh, for some reason I thought x-carve wasteboard inserts were M6. So yeah, you would have to use some H.D. washers in conjunction with M5 bolts. And yes, agree about Carbide 3D. Their innovation and machines are a good margin above Inventables.
