Ingredients:
- 600g soaked Tiger Nuts (475g dry Tiger Nuts)
- 1.5 litres cold water
Other ingredients you can add to it:
- Coconut
- Cinnamon
- Ginger
- Sugar
To strain it you'll need a chiffon cloth or ladies stocking/tights (pantyhose without the panty lol).
Tiger Nuts Milk tastes like soya milk, but much better. It has this refreshing nutty taste that I can't describe. You need to try it and see for yourself!

There are 2 varieties of tiger nuts: brown and black. They can be eaten as a snack or used to make Tiger Nut Milk, known as Kunun Aya in Hausa or Horchata de chufas in Spanish.
Names:
- Tiger nuts in English
- Aki Awusa in Igbo
- Aya in Hausa
- Isip Isong in Efik/Ibibio
- Ofio in Yoruba
- Hausa Groundnut in Pidgin
- Keegun in Okun
- Chufas in Spanish.
To eat it as a snack, just chew and suck on the chaff then spit out the chaff. Some people swallow the chaff but it is quite difficult for me to swallow. Eat with peanuts (groundnuts) and the chaff will be softer and easier to swallow.
Where to buy Tiger Nuts:
1. In Nigeria, Tiger Nuts are sold by Hausa Mallams on the streets and in all major markets in Nigeria.
2. In Spain look for them in any Frutos Secos shop ie shops that sell dry fruits. Ask for chufas.
3. In the UK you can buy them on Amazon website: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009GH6OH6...

Benefits of Tiger Nuts:
1. Tigernut oil is used in the cosmetic industry. As it is antidioxide (because of its high content in vitamin E) it helps slow down the ageing of the body cells. It favours the elasticity of the skin and reduces skin wrinkles.
2. It supplies the body with enough quantity of Vitamin E, very essential for fertility in both men and women.

I'm a Spaniard from the Valencia region, so i was brought up drinking horchata de chufas. I'm happy to know Nigerians and Spaniards share the tiger nuts tradition. great video!

this is fantastic. trying to switch from cow milk because i read a lot about how bad it is for mens prostate and Africans especially. Considered soy but didn't like the mood swings it gave me. this seems safe

Me too! Never heard of the drink before till I posted about tiger nuts on FB. I only just chewed them when I was younger! Can you buy them in SA? This drink is something else, it's good for the hair too lol

Just got done making this. I wish it was a little thicker but we did have to add a little sugar. I love it but its a ton of work! 1.5 hours to harvest nuts then another 45 to wash then to blend and strain and make it but its well worth it! got another 6 gallons of chufa to harvest today

Caitlin Villasenor you have absolute control of how much water to add, just add less water next time. Remember that yours are very fresh, I started with dry ones hence the need for more water. It is a lot of work but well worth it, the milk is so delicious! Harvesting them added to the work too! But you are so lucky to have the freshest Tiger Nuts!

It is very much in the US, sold by La Tienda and on Amazon. Look/ask for chufas, the Spanish name for Tiger nuts. More info in the description of the video. Go get those tiger nuts! :)))

Very nice. I plan to save seed (tubers) from Cyperus esculentus L. (Tigernut - Chufa) that I found volunteering in a portion of my yard that I stopped mowing a few week ago. I think Tigernut will soon be the newest ancient superfood.

hahaha @ scared! Relocation is not an easy thing dear. For Nigerian food ingredients, it depends on which part of Canada you are going to. If you will live in the major cities where there are lots of Nigerians, you should be able to buy them from African shops.

Nice one, think i'll try this biut can it be stored in the refrigerator and for how long can the preservation or can it stay in the fridge. secondly how often can this be taken for improve strength and performance. thirdly, how thick or light should the mixture be prior to consumption? Thanks

I store it in the fridge at most 24 hours. This drink goes bad very easily. I don't like the way it is when it comes out of the freezer, it curdles up. Not good.

The closest I know is soya milk but tiger nut milk is tastier! You need to try it to see how delicious it is! I don't think there's a substitute for this. I have info about where you can buy them in the description. :))

can you re use the lady stocking? I used to use a "nut milk bag" but it started to fall apart , I am looking for a good strainer that will LAST, I wonder how this lady stocking holds up to nut milk bag? (cheese cloth can barber bacteria so I never used it and holes to big) my but milk bag was also not made of cotton. any options opion?

Yes, you can reuse it. You can use it for as long as holes do not appear on it.

Sure, some vitamins and nutrients will be lost but you don't want that fibrous chaff in the drink. If you don't want to lose any nutrients, just chew the nuts and swallow everything. :)

Really? There are various signs that a nut is bad. Some have a small hole made by some bug that went in to eat the insides of the nut. You will definitely see something that tells you that a bad nut is not as healthy as the rest when you look at it closely. :)
