Back in the mid 70s, I played trombone with a Dixieland group at "Shakey's Pizza" in Kitchijoji, JP (spelling?). Yoshio and Keiko (last names forgotten) were the organizers. I was in the Navy at the time and the only non-Japanese in the group. Wonderful memories! I'm in my mid 80s now and play trombone infrequently, playing banjo just for fun.

Kikuchi Haruka has her engine hot and takes charge of this tune which, you could say is written for her and the slide. All the players are great but let's focus on her. Her gusty blasts from bass up and down are vigorous and especially the upper register is clean and playful. Wonderful.

It's really odd, like I've stumbled into a parallel Universe to find a thriving world of Japanese trad jazz players. Great to see my fave genre doing so well there, and that's one mean momma on the trombone. Seems as if there's plenty more to enjoy on you tube.

WOW!!! Outstanding, Amazing, and such an entertaining trombone player!! ❤️ She and Swedish trombone player, Gunhild Carling, should get together. I love your piano player, too. In her solo, she is playing parts similar to Chris Barber's solo of Tiger Rag - great minds think alike❤️ All of y'all are awesome! I watch your videos everyday.
@markhorton39943 жыл бұрын
Gunhild Carling is not in Haruna Kikuchi's league. People tent to think Gunhild is something special because she says so continuously. Gunhild would try to upstage Haruna Kikuchi and fail. Gunhild plays trumpet trombone bag pipe and other instruments especially ego. If you want a great trombone duo convince the founding trombone player of Shake En Up Shaye Cohn to join her replacement for an evening or a piece. Shaye would back Kikuchi up expertly.

That Record I've been in New Orleans for 6years now, still young musicians pay attention about this music here😊⚜️
@thatrecord53134 жыл бұрын
@@8trombone6 Right, but this is New Orleans we talkin' here. If Orleans don't blast jazz, I don't know what that place is anymore. But keep in mind the keyword: largely. Where I'm at (Las Vegas) the word jazz is related to circus music and the "hip" music here sounds like a black dude chanting , NOT SINGING, to a beat... I wish everyplace had musicians on the street just playing out to soul, not to mp3 file...
@markhorton39943 жыл бұрын
@@thatrecord5313 None of the core original members of Tuba Skinny is from NO. Shaye, Barnabas, Todd, Robin and Erika are all from elsewhere. The first reed player Ewan or Evan went back to England. I don't know about Shake Em Up Jazz Band except that Chloe the clarinet player is from southern California and the 2nd and current trombone player is none other than Hiruna Kikuchi. Jazz is alive many places.
