#GasTraining Tightness testing. Viva Training Academy. And we're going to show you a tightness test. I've got an expert trainer today, Russ, the expert trainer, and he's going to show us how to do a tightness test on a U6 and a G4 gas meter, a low pressure system. So yeah, let's go and have a look.
GAS TRAINING. HOW TO DO A TIGHTNESS TEST.
Thank you, Allen, for that. My name's Russ from Viva Training Academy This morning we're hoping to take you through, well we're definitely going to take you through, tightness testing, the basics at least, and we'll build up from there. My experience is 40 plus years in gas industry, and the last 22 or 3 in training, specifically, mainly domestic, but also commercial.
Tightness Test - Low Pressure Gas Installation - Gas Training
Why do we tightness test? Obvious reasons really, to make sure we weren't leaking any gas, but also for other reasons, we're looking at pressures. We're looking at the installation in general, and we're also inspecting, has it been installed correctly before we even do a tightness test?
What we have here is a typical metre installation. Although there are a number of faults on it, and this is something you need to be looking for before you start even doing your tightness test. There is obvious things to a gas engineer that will become second nature to you as you go along. The main tap itself, is it secured correctly? Simple things. Does it fall to the off? What we mean by that is, should it be not, it would close not open by accident. There should be a label here saying which direction to move that lever in. All faults that should be rectified as you go along. Metre regulator, is it sealed? The metre itself, is it secure?
And when we move outwards from there onto the main pipework, there should be what we call, earth bonding. In other words, a connection to the main electrical circuit, should there be any stray current which would trip the safety devices. It should be visible. It may not be visible, but it should be visible for the gas engineer to be able to know it's there. If it's not, we'll come to it later. It's just paperwork exercise, what we need to cover here. It should ideally be before the first branch or first T on the pipe work. If there's only one pipe within the first 600 millimetres of the metre outlet.
Right, installing the U tube gauge, always difficult to find somewhere to secure it in this particular case, we're taking the pipe round the back but for ease of. You find somewhere to stand it up, hang it up, they do come with a stand quite often. There's various ways you can fasten that up. The screw on the metre, the test point on the metre. It shouldn't be tight, if it is tight, don't bring it so tight afterwards. They are only a small screen and they do snap off quite easily. The U tube gauge, we've always already checked to make sure the integrity of the gauge is good. You won't be the first engineer to spend a while looking for a leak that's on your old equipment. Always check your own equipment first. Putting the gauge onto the metre. And that's the basics. Already zero-ed the metre and the gauge, as I say, and that's ready to test.
So what we're going to do first is a let-by test.
Why do we do a let-by test? We're trying to prove the integrity of this valve. Why do we need to prove the integrity? We want to know, is the valve sound in itself? Is it passing any gas through it? If that valve is passing gas, it could mask a small leak on the system. If it's leaking as much as it's passing, you'd never know we had a gas leak. So we need to prove, first of all, is that valve gas tight. To do that, we pressurise the system to a smaller pressure, which allows us to be able to see any rising pressure if that valve is passing. In this particular case, we're going to raise it to approximately 10 millibars, the book says 10, 10.5, in fact the book says 7 to 10, but around that pressure will prove the point.

Good video but I would like to address some differences in procedures from the gas utility I worked for. My experience comes from 35 years as a first responder / gas fitter for the gas utility in St Louis, Missouri. Your pressure test procedure with the water tube manometer is pretty close to ours except for the measurements here in the states would be in inches of water column. Differences would be #1 we would not put a service regulator back in use without knowing it's lock up and working pressures #2 Flex line connections are prohibited on the inside and outside meter sets ( we did use them at times years ago but found them to be problematic as they aged). All meter sets here are hard piped into place. #3 apparently you use the Pietro Fiorentini regulators with a vent limiter & we still use IMRV type Regulators that still need to be vented to the atmosphere.outside.#4 is your copper fuel runs in this video soft-soldered (?) or am I mistaken & that is a high temperature brazing alloy? Thanks for the video and please stay safe out there.

Hi Alan, I watch your postings every night and they are absolutely brilliant, so easily explained and easy to understand. I have been considering a career change for the last few years and gas engineering always comes out on top! I am in my later years in of my working career at 48 and my only option would be the fast track option. The trouble I have is finding a gas engineer that would help with completing the portfolio, my labour of course would be free. So if you have any suggestions to help me I would be extremely grateful. Best regards Mick

I had a gas engineer come round and check my system, he did a let by test, a tightness test and a burn rate check......... all passed ok, no let by, no leaks and the burn rate was perfect. however when I turn the gas off before it gets to the meter, my meter is still ticking up by a small amount! Also I've received a bill from my energy supplier for £7000 worth of gas, for dates between November and July. This is for a 2 up, 2 down, with gas only used for heating and hot water. I mostly use 2 wood burners for heating so I barely have the heating on. The gas engineer said it wasn't possible to use that much gas as the boiler would have melted into the ground! He said there is no gas leak and if there was, for that amount of gas, the whole street would be able to smell it. Any ideas?

Why do we do the TT at 20-21mb? What is the main reason at this pressure? Thanks
@johnboy1232
@johnboy1232 4 жыл бұрын
I have always thought testing for let by first and then the test for soundness which requires two movements of the consumer control cock could show a tight CCC the first time but could in theory pass when you are testing for soundness . By checking for let by after a successful soundness test ie reducing the pressure in the system to 7/ 10 mbar would enable the let by to be achieved with only one movement of the CCC. I never would leave a 4m bar drop ,always thought this was very generous depending on the volume of the installation of course and cirtainly not 8 m bars for the newer meters.The internal volume of gas may be less for the meter but stays the same for the installation which could contain long pipe runs of pipework.LastlyI used to find meter test nipples could have hair line cracks in them where they had been tightened to excess.but turning the screw back a touch would close the crack up and it would not show . Easily missed.

V Good. How about a vid on what the regulator is for? On the old town gas there was none, as each appliance had its own regulator (called a governor). Also emphasizing massive difference in pressure from 22 mb (gas) 2 bar (common on a mains water supply). What pressure regulator should be set to, to know when to report it if out of range? mention pressure in the gas mains pipe to after the regulator. This varies of course. Maybe outside of topic, but high and medium pressures gas mains. All meters have an overload, mention that. I could go on. ;)
