I have seen people do that kind of thing and then show me something awesome and I've been excited to give credit where it's due. I think, like another comment said, it's about the amount of hype he built for such a low quality song. The song itself isn't even the worst in the world. It's not great and I don't enjoy it but some of the melodic intervals are at least interesting and I could see someone liking it. But he started off being kind of annoying with that question and then didn't shock people with the high quality of it lol

I feel that starting that tiktok with “is this the next emo anthem” was the biggest mistake. Any bold statements like that and the like of “if you like MCR you’ll love my band” are destined to not work with the emo crowd. The alternative scene was born out of not liking what everyone else likes, not being who everyone else is, by not fitting in so making it obvious that we don’t fit in. Tell us you made a song you think we might enjoy, that represents your view on the scene. That’ll get way more positive attention. I listen to pop punk frequently, and IMO this song is OK at best, but I think the visuals are where it really falls apart. If you've ever seen a video by Finn McKenty (The Punkrock MBA) you know how important he thinks the projected personality, or "star power", of the frontman of a band is, and I tend to agree with that. This is a one-man-band (as far as I can tell), which makes his presentation even more important when he decides to include himself in the video(s). To me he comes off as disingenuous in the newer videos (including the music video), like he's doing a persona, and the performance feels both forced and understated somehow, like he doesn't quite dare to go all in, because it's not really who he is. (The half assed dance in the "happy pop-break" at 6:08 was especially painful to watch). In the older videos he comes off as more genuine, and even though the music isn't necessarily better, it's at least more pleasant to watch. I get making a flashy video and trying to stand out, but people can smell bullshit from a mile away. The lyrics also seem to be impersonaI, and to me they come off more like he's used a "pop punk lyric formula" rather than write something meaningful himself. I'm not saying this to be mean to the guy, it's just my take on the matter. I do hope he keeps at it and tries to improve, and that he can learn to project himself more genuinely in the process.

Oh you're right!!XD Maybe because it mentions princes and princesses the imagined ages are primary school ages? I think the reason he's getting way more hate than he should is cause he's targetting a subculture that's really big on gatekeeping (coming from someone who was on the receiving end). I haven't visited his profile but I'm honestly so sure that a lot of the people hating on him are the same people that would ask you to name three songs if they saw you wearing a shirt from a rock band Edit: didn't expect a lot of people to agree with me lmao

Danny being honest but not needlessly cruel is such a nice thing to see, I feel like a lot of people who focus on commentary try too hard to justify their criticism instead of keeping a fair balance and end up being a bit excessive in an attempt to overcompensate. Good video, hopefully this dude can learn from it. (I think the most important thing to learn from these days is the point about giving people a reaction. Even smaller artists I follow run into this problem where they try to be accommodating and instead people use it as opportunity to dogpile accusations or guilt them into only creating content that person wants to see.)

I know this video is old, but I think the thing with Andy is he can either make music for the community, or make music for himself and build a community around that. There's nothing wrong with either of those routes, as long as you're enjoying it. But Andy is trying to make music for himself and push that music onto the community, and it's clearly not working out. One thing I think might help is cover songs? It helps you get a better grasp of the instruments and singing styles and what you like versus what other people like.

The culture of just ruthlessly knocking on people or cringing at them is so exhaustingly negative and it's also like... discouraging anyone from trying things or sharing them if they can't be instantly popular or monetized or perfect beyond reproach. ok ima be all over this comment thread saying this guy deserved it. he lives in my city and hes the biggest gatekeepy POS and is known to be super predatory with women
@glucosegremlin7972 Жыл бұрын
yeah, on one hand there are a lot of people calling themselves "goth" or "emo" just to seem cool without actually being in the subcultures, but on the other hand the amount of gatekeeping and classism in the community is disproportionately bad compared to that. people act like if you dont own at least one pair of demonias you're not alternative and its dumb.

honestly taking this song and making it more of a "wake me up when September ends" vibe I'm sure more people would enjoy it. honestly the convoluted message he's giving after the fact sucks but if the good intent is there, then that all this guy needs.

i think the biggest problem with the guy's music is he seems like a rhythm guitarist, the type that learned music through singing over acoustic guitar. which is great! but you cant always just take something that sounds good with acoustic guitar and vocals, slam it out on electric, and then sing louder and hope it works. ill bet you ANYTHING he composes on acoustic guitar, relying on his more practiced skills. i do that too, but it's not exactly easy to write electric guitar pieces with an acoustic instrument. that acoustic ballad version of the song is great because the guitar and vocals work together to create a flow. in the electric one, hes using power chords, and longer notes, and he doesnt change the vocals. it just creates an awkward mismatch and it makes it sound like he's singing off tempo. just one notch better at making music, like danny said, and this guy would have it in the bag! he's just missing the mark a little bit on the genre and on a consistent genre, instrument to instrument.

The biggest mistake he could've ever done was say "Did I make the newest emo anthem?" because it immediately got himself to be compared to the likes of MCR or PaTD and have his starting song be compared to The Black Parade, which... No, nothing can really be compared to that album nor its most infamous song. It's not just because the song feels like it's going off of scene music rather than emo punk rock, it's also because it's not... unique? Or out there, in terms of the emo nor scene genres. I think he definitely has opportunity. If he were to go back to his laid-back and grounded self and made his own style, I think he'll be able to find his own community. I will say, though, TikTok is very prone to harassing people and repeating jokes that aren't funny after the first time. I'm not surprised that happened.

as an ex/old emo person who shopped only at hot topic, etc, this sounds exactly like something we would’ve listened to. we like the 2010s pop punk music cause of nostalgia, it’s not like it was incredible music

i think honestly if he improved as a singer + got some better instrumentals he could make some good stuff. and better lyrics. ok a lot but nonethless

Yikes, in 2010 I was listening to A Day to Remember What Separates Me From You not this generic mess even the year after we had The Story so Far’s Debut.

@@GrayWoIf those bands i mentioned were always pop punk. But i think around 2010 or before idr is when they got really poppy with their sound. I was already kind of out of them in like 2005 and by 2010 listening to saosin, adtr, killswitch, and emarosa.

No shade to this guy, I'm super glad he's living his best life, but he's no incredible lyricist? Not sure what you were listening to but not EVERY pop punk artist was, is, or should be the same. Also I think people don't realize there is some descrepancy between early emo and pop punk artists. Strictly emo or post-hardcore tended to be darker, grungier, or more depressing while the pop punk and scene era leaned heavier on the angsty rebellious teen anthems. We're talking about an umbrella genre that spans over 25 years at this point, it's super reductive to say all of it wasn't incredible music just cause of Blink 182 or We the Kings or some shit.

I think a big part is that he’s pushing the one song as if he’s an established artist with a new single, as opposed to an enthusiastic unsigned artist. If he released TikToks about his process of writing and recording *other* songs, it wouldn’t come across as so defensive, and he could actually seem to progress as a creator. Going for a “hey, what do you think of this new chorus/lyric/idea” would allow for him to react to feedback, as opposed to spending his time trying to argue about the qualities of his finished song.
