You are right. He didn’t phrase it correctly but his question was a good one. This is a problem with IOT devices as well as they sometimes scan your local WiFi network which is why it’s recommended to put those devices on their own VLAN

@@aznmochibunny It's the amount and specifics of the data that's the problem. If an app uses my data to track how much I'm on that app and related functions, that's to be expected. If like Instagram it can track data on other units connected to the same network, that's a bit of a problem. Also I think most people are completely ignorant of how much your service provider as well as some apps can see and track.

Whether he meant something else or not, the phrasing he used to ask that question sounded dumb. I’ve worked in technology for years and the way he worded that question was dumb. He obviously doesn’t understand technology that well either, or his questions would have been worded better. This just proves that people who don’t understand how apps work, shouldn’t be examining someone else. No hate just a different viewpoint.

A decent hacker can steal a lot of information by accessing your Wi-Fi network. But if you've got things to hide, then you likely have more protections in place, whether there technical like firewalls or just regulations within the building. I had a friend who was a programmer working for a medical company and they weren't allowed to connect any personal devices to the work wi-fi, or to connect their work laptops to their home wifi, in case competition tried to get information. I can understand them wanting to keep it off of government devices, but at the same time, government devices shouldn't have anything other than work stuff on it anyway. There are thousands of apps that steal and store data. Targeting this one specific one isn't going to change anything. I wish they had to let the public vote on *every* law instead of being able to pass what they want, because it's so obvious they have no idea what they're doing.

I think he honestly intended for the question to be more like, can it use a person's shared WiFi network to access their personal files, or something like that. But the question was horrifically vague, as is the bill. Some savvy republicans have tried to stop the ban as its phrased now, because it would ban other technologies in the US too. It's just another example of legislators not having a clue about what they're banning or allowing. If they'd have the balls to stop letting evangelical retirees run the show they'd be able to fill the ranks with educated consultants and people that actually, oh ,idk, represent the people. That's one of the reasons a few of the more savvy republicans have tried to stop the ban. On the grounds it would also call for a ban of... essentially most mobile technologies in the US. It's way too vague and definitely written by people who aren't tech experts. He might have actually meant can the app access sensitive information on the users private network (and subsequently access more than the shared files) through the WiFi connection. But thats a long and complicated question, that, even I don't know if I phrased correctly for what I mean, so the republican is all HURR DURR does it connect to WiFi? Like, the implications of that question eventually lead to the app hacking into personal computers through a shared WiFi network. But he sure as hell didn't actually ask that.

Tic toc could be a legitimate threat to security since its owners are Chinese and the government has too much control over their businesses. They need to make a US entity of tic toc and not allow stored databases.

If true, then that's exactly why pushing the bill through as is will have a severe ripple effect. It wouldn't matter *which* government hijacks the data without the users will (consent is probably baked into the ToS which, frankly, barely anyone reads), the app should be banned. It's like the bible being included in the banned book list. As, it's a completely valid book to ban. So, if TikTok gets banned, other apps i.e Instagram would have to be banned too. [I can't say for certain which government has access to what. International legislations being incompatible at best. For as many accusations of CCP data mining, there's an 'expert' saying it's not the case. (Same can be said for the USA, they might claim your data is safe in US servers and special subpoenas are needed, but, frankly, depends on corruption etc)]

I understand what you are saying since I have Weibo, Wechat these Chinese apps installed in my phone.. But not only Chinese apps., Instagram, Apex Legends game and some other American apps tried gaining access to other things connected on the same network. 💀

But going back to my original point, she is using the video to make fun of "boomer" politicians who don't understand technology, when it's basic I.t security.
