I'm a toy collector as well (though I do take mine out of the packaging) and always call BS when people go "well, what if you have friends over with kids? Kids don't understand that." My sister has two kids and they have always understood that the figures in the cabinets are off limits. There were a bunch of age appropriate toys set aside for them that they could play with.

As someone who's own dad needs a wheel chair but can still walk for a limited amount of time I was just wondering how the stereotype is harmful? As the most harm I can imagine is just someone asking us about it or telling an employe about it who asks us about it. Lastly with someone just being a Karen about it. But none of those are really harmful at all at most it is just frustrating (with the Karen) to just explaining it to people which my dad would love to do because he is a people's person. Edit: Just want to add on that I also thankful that they talked about it as most people don't know that.

But yes, part of it is Karens, but a big part of why it's dangerous is the way society sees people in wheelchairs, especially in America. A good personal example is my own mom who deals with so much chronic pain that she spends most days at home in a fog. She can walk, and she uses that against herself. She grew up with people who told her she was faking or exaggerating. That she was just being lazy. That her pain was normal and she needed to just deal with it. It took me years of gently urging her to go and be seen because she was told by everyone in her life for 40+ years that debilitating pain was normal. Mobility devices help her have more energy for the day, but she refuses to use them. After all, she can still walk. It doesn't matter that a shower seat can save her energy to cook or clean, she can still stand in a shower. It doesn't matter that a walker gives her extra stability and time outside, she can still walk without it. It doesn't matter that she could have a good day outside with less pain, if she could power through for 5 minutes to get something done and spend the rest of her day suffering. She can still walk, and she refuses mobility devices that help her because she KNOWS how it would look if someone saw her able to walk one day and in a wheelchair the next. She KNOWS how many people will say she's faking if she stands up from a wheelchair for something. Harm doesn't have to be physically caused by other people. Harm can be done by the way we judge people. Harm can be done over years and years of discrediting and brushing aside people. Harm also can be done by OURSELVES based on what we think people expect from us. I don't think there's anyone who hasn't ever changed how they act because they were scared of what people would think of them. In the case of my mom, it's acting like she doesn't have a disability so people don't see her as weak. That came from years of being dismissed but also from watching how people treat disability. Another thing that sticks with me about what you said is how your dad explains to strangers. I don't know about everyone but I don't want every person I meet to know about my health issues. I had a service dog for a while due to some serious health issues, and the amount of people who would ask about my personal medical history was startling. Some would be nice when I would decline to answer but most would be angry. I would get people who would cuss at me for not letting them pet my dog. If I had broken down and told them my entire medical history, would that have changed their attitude? Is that on me, or is that on them? I guess the question that really should be asked is why do I need to justify myself to strangers on their whim? Why should I have to give away my right of privacy so someone can judge whether or not I deserve to exist in public? Why should my mom (or your dad) have to explain to strangers so they can use devices that make their life easier? Why should disabled people put themselves through more pain and harm just to fit into someone's idea of how they should be?
