Imagine you spent your entire childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood stuck inside a small closet. One day, after much of your life has passed you by, you realize that you can just open up the door, change into some more appropriate clothes, and hit the town! Free at last, what would you do first? Maybe sing a bit? Go on a few dates? By the way, you have two to four weeks to live. Yikes.

About National Geographic:
National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible.
This is not unlike the situation most cicadas face, as they spend almost their entire lives underground. For example, many of the cicadas emerging in 2016 have been underground for 17 years! To put that in perspective, the last Star Wars movie these insects saw was literally a menace. Imagine waking up in a world without Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray! Come to think of it, things are really looking up since 1999.
A cicada’s ear-piercing call is intended to attract a gal pal. Considering that these little creatures’ time above ground is so fleeting, they need to lock down a date as soon as possible. This could be why most cicadas are louder than the average fraternity pledge. Adult males are the ones making such a racket, and some species can register sounds louder 100 decibels when calling for a potential mate. In this week’s Today I Learned, National Geographic Emerging Explorer and filmmaker Sandesh Kadur explains how cicadas sing such a loud song.

I helped one that just hatched get on it's feet so it could live. I never knew all that higher pitched noise in the trees among the other cicadas could be him looking for a lady cicada to get with. I didn't know he would be a horn dog after he came out. I thought he was a baby.

I believe these cicadas were recorded either in Japan or Korea. The call at 0:30-0:35 is the species Hyalessa maculaticollis.

love cicadas. Love their song. In a society where car radios vibrate your classroom windows when they pass and where people are glued to headphones, I'm not worried about the tranquil sound of cicadas. (lol, all these comments on here thinking the sound of a cicada is what hurts your ears and asking why they put the sound in a video. He said how LOUD they can be CAN damage your eardrums, not the sound itself, and not always. It just has the ability to--probably more so if you're really close to one. If you have your volume turned up that loud, that's your own fault...)

During swarms, which comes in cycles, they most certainly can. We had a swarm here in tennessee a few years back, and I have had tinnitus ever since. Perhaps some species are worse than others. That year the sound was so loud and deafening, people couldn't handle being outside at all. The rest of the time, the sound isn't bad, and is just the sound of summer :)

@TheLittleAzn 8 жыл бұрын
Ok, back when I was a kid, I was stupid enough to try what you've said and this is what happened. 1. Cicadas are very senitive insects. They will not sing if they find themselves insecure (unless its a warning cry) especially if it's touched in anyway. 2. I've seen one sing from afar, but it's actually beautiful to watch.
