Today is so different than the days of Vietnam. In 1973, I was walking through the Atlanta, GA airport and a college age woman spit on me and called me a baby killer. Many of us experienced that back then. When I returned from Desert Storm, my C-5 landed at Dover for refueling before continuing to Atlanta. We were put on a bus and taken to a hangar where we would be able to shower and freshen up. As we stepped inside the corner door, we were met by hundreds of civilians cheering. They had formed an aisle towards the opposite corner where a disabled veteran was waving our flag. And they started playing, "I'm Proud To Be An American". Seeing this incredible change was overwhelming for me and the four others of us that had lived through the hate of the Vietnam era. We were on our knees in tears. Thank you to all those folks for that.

Music is designed to pull emotions we would otherwise keep tucked away: NEVER feel that you have to apologize for how the music moves you - we’re all feeling it too!

I watch this and his Arlington on every military / national holiday… please always remember the sacrifices made for us. My WW2 veteran father taught his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that you show respect for this country’s flag - “you stand for the flag the way those soldiers stood for you“ - won’t ever forget those words and the quiet , humble sincerity in his voice whenever he said them

Sebs, thanks for reviewing this! I am a West Point grad and a Vietnam veteran. This song expresses how much combat veterans really understand and wish to avoid war! It is also why I and many others like me wanted us out of Iraq and Afghanistan years ago. The repeated combat tours that we put today’s much smaller military through created even greater stress and suffering for soldiers and their families than Vietnam. Your tears and mine were justified.

My dad is gone 25 years now but my pride never fades. He enlisted in the US Army shortly after December 7th, 1941 after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He was shipped off to the South Pacific. He landed with MacArthur in 1943 in the Philippines and was there to liberate the Philippines. He was the only survior of his squad but did not come out unscathed. He was badly wounded Christmas Day 1944 and had lost a substantial amount of blood. He was doomed until some Filipinos made a litter out of his clothing and got him to the US medics camp. He never talked about his experience until he ws near his end of days. His story of survival is remarkable and is in the Library of Congress. He was married to my mom for 59 years and had 4 kids and never took any disibility until he could no longer work. He was a true warrior.!

Dude, one of the things I like most about you is that you're human and you show it. Please don't apologize for or be embarrassed about having honest emotions. I'm from a long line of military men, including one in Germany during WW2 and 2 in Vietnam, and my grandson just graduated from Marine basic training. While I'm insanely proud of him, the world political climate right now has me insanely terrified for him. I'd never heard this song before and it wrecked me. For the record, the Wounded Warrior Project is one of the worthiest organizations out there. When people are deciding where to donate I hope they consider these people.

There have been members of my family who have died and bled in all but the current generation. One of my Uncles went down in the Battle of Midway and another Uncle went down behind German lines in WWII and never got to come home for they could not be found. My Dad and another uncle fought and bled. When my Dad left the military he went with the Government Foreign Service. My Mother, Me, and my Sister went with him to countries that didn't always feel kindly to Americans, but we stood proudly beside my Dad. I am damn proud has been part of the founding of this country from the being. I am damn Proud to be an American for I have seen the other side of things up close and personal. I love this country and will continue to Stand up and Be counted. For She Is Worth Fighting For!

I've been lucky in that both my grandfathers served and both came home. My mother's father was in the "border dispute with Mexico" (ie, the US' actions to prevent the Mexican Revolutionary War from spilling over the border 1912-1917). My father's father fought in WW1 having emigrated to Canada from Britain just a few years before. I was too young when they died to remember much (both my parents were born late in their fathers' lives), but even 40 years later I remember the pain and unwillingness to talk about their service.

You know I am having a bit of a moment right now. I spent over a year in Afghanistan with the Marines. I have done two tours and have had friends die and end their own lives due to war. The only thing going through my head right now is all the lies that are coming to light about the war. It feels as if my friends died for no reason. It feels like I missed out on my sons childhood for oil and money and it feels like I lost my relationship with my wife because of corruption and greed. I just don't know if it was worth it.

We just buried my uncle at Arlington a couple of weeks ago. He spent 20 years in the USMC...Korea and Vietnam combat veteran. I watched a reaction to this song a few days ago and based on his perspective, he wonders if Trace means that they can't go home until the last shot is fired in any war. Our fallen men and women are in "limbo" until the last war ever is finished...that's when the last shot will be fired. I would love to ask Trace if that was the underlying meaning of the this song. Either way, the song is hauntingly beautiful.

We love our troops because they love us enough to stand up and protect our way of life. They have nearly 250 years - remember the first shots in the revolutionary war were fired April 19, 1775 from that moment until today, and for many more to come the American military does what it does out of love. Sebs your reaction is what every single American should feel when seeing this performance.

I'm Native American and Scottish, I grew up on a reservation in California, my grandparents raised me, and I was taught not to show my emotions publicly. I grew up, got married, raised 4 kids, and then my oldest grandson joined the Marine's, he was at Camp Pendleton, and we live in Missouri. We were watching a movie called Taking Chance, neither my husband nor my kids had ever seen me cry until that night. The movie is about a young Marine named Chance that gets killed I think it was in Afghanistan, my phone rang, it was my grandson, he called to tell me his platoon was next to be shipped to Afghanistan, and I had to give the phone to my husband for a few minutes, I told him to please be careful and to come back home to us alive, no matter what shape his body was in, I would take care of him the platoon's orders were changed and they were sent to 29 Palms, the hell hole. I'm a retired mortician and I've had the honor and privilege to have our fallen in the funeral home I worked at when I lived in Kentucky, but that phone call scared me to death, I sat there shaking and it was about 2 weeks later when I knew he was safe and I finally watched the movie, by the way, Kevin Bacon was excellent in it as Chance's escort. I highly recommend it.

The same thing happened to me. I was listening to the words and started to get overwhelmed and started crying and asking God to stop the wars and pain.

I was surprised to see more than one somewhat recent reaction video to this. To this day, this is one of the most powerful pieces of music I've ever had the opportunity to perform.
