Lyrics:
I'm in the dark, I'd like to read his mind
But I'm frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he's thinking of
To tear him away-a-ay
When I tell him that I'm falling in love
Why does he say-a-ay
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Uh-ah
I try so hard not to get upset
Because I know all the trouble I'll get
Oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
And something to fear-eh-eh
And I try so hard to keep it inside
So no one can hear

This song will forever remind me of the summer 1985. Graduated high school and turned 19 that August. After my summer job was over, I could not find a job. No one would hire me. I even went to a temporary job service and even they wouldn't hire me. I finally got a job running a dish machine in a mall resteraunt that December. I just turned 57 this past August and have been retired since May of 2021. This song was on the radio everywhere in 1985 and is a reminder of how fast life passes you by. Please try to stay cognizant of blessings and enjoy your life as much as possible..... it goes by fast.

Seriously because I love this song and listened to it a million times and just realized that the man in this video is my boyfriend. My boyfriend and I have been together for 10 years but he's the type of man who doesn't show much emotion at all. Like he sees emotion as weakness. When I asked him for a little bit more emotion like maybe telling me I love you before I have to tell him would be great but he acts like I'm crazy and tells me obviously he loves me. Lol it's called stop acting so tough because I know you're not but hey, people are different. I know he enjoys the I love yous and you're the best thing that's ever happened to mes he gets from me.

@@roadglidered oh yes he does and I know he loves me for sure it's just nice to hear it don't you think? I know most men aren't the emotional type and I don't need it but it would be nice to hear. I'm a disabled woman with epilepsy which I developed a few years into our relationship and he has been here to take care of me and do everything I need him to do. I just struggle with my emotions having to depend on him as well as my father to take me to work and home and to go grab a coffee if I want one... I always feel like neither of them want to do any of that for me and it's almost like he feels bad for me that's why he stays. In reality I know he wouldn't stay if he didn't want to be here because he's not dependent like me but it gets in my head sometimes when I don't get smiles and I love yous out of the blue because I know he's not thinking about it or he would be happy to say it especially with my low self-esteem... I guess I'm just too needy but I'd be a lot less stressed knowing that my boyfriend is thinking of me and how much he loves me... He just doesn't think about loving me as much as I think about him not loving me.... If that makes sense 😂

Gen Xr' here! There are songs like this one that just bring back a flood of memories from an entire decade! I was in the 8th grade and I remember seeing this video on Night Tracks and being utterly fascinated by the storyline and not entirely understanding it nor the song too well. I did know that he was trying to make her something she wasn't tho. Now, I see both as very cinematic and so perfect! Music and music videos were such an escape for us "latchkey kids" because we had so many adult responsibilities from a very young age! That said, we also have so many amazing pop culture moments to look back on now. The 80's were truly magical! Our very own "wonder years"!

Deep Song about a person who feels trapped in a relationship where they're unable to express themselves freely. They're burdened by the fear of judgment and disapproval from their partner or the people around them. As a result, they're forced to hide their true thoughts and emotions. The song conveys the frustration of not being able to be one's authentic self due to external pressures and expectations. THX Chat GPT

Yeah, that scene was what I remember most about the video. In fact, it's kind of funny the things you remember years later. I'll never forget the sight of the tuxedoed guy sitting immediately in front of Aimee Mann. He was just out for a night at the opera and he gets a ringside seat to this drama.

Yes, I always get shivers, terrific scene! Kind of rude to whoever was supposed to be performing though. But I like how everyone is at first like "wtf" and "come on lady, we're trying to watch fucking Aida or something" but then start turning as she ramps it up and upstages those sad sacks they paid good money to see. Even beard man scarf man was enraptured at the end!

I absolutely love the opera scene. I love the irony of how you are supposed to be quiet at an opera and she had the courage to stand up and be heard, which of course is symbolic of her being in an abusive relationship and finding the courage to stand up for herself. A very powerful moment!

I don't agree. I was a child in the 70s when the 50s were made into nostalgia. Adults who lived then told the 50s were nasty, dull, and ordinary. I felt the same way about the 80s and I chuckle when people who were not adults try to make nostalgia out of the 80s.

I see some nasty comments about the male lead in the video. His name was Cully Holland. He was an actor who had a very short career, unfortunately. The video was made in 1985. Six years later, Mr Holland died from complications due to the AIDS virus. I think that better commentary about this man is probably in order. Yes, his character was a horrible person. The fact that Mr Holland made the character so realistic is a testament to his skill as an actor. May God rest his soul.

Having a thick skin and realistic attitude includes the realization that at any given moment, 70-90% of people in a specific issue are clueless morons, total idiots who speak from empty minds instead of thinking with empathy and researched knowledge LoL. Doesn't mean the same people are idiots in all things or don't eventually mature or become more enlightened as time goes on. After all life and experience is a process, not a stand alone static thing. Also some people don't like other people and it is subjective so there is that. The important thing is don't let others (thick skin) delegate your life and attitude, only you. This was a good mini movie and the guy helped make it playing his character's role so well (cold and demeaning, I also felt a brutal undertone of violence just under the surface in his portrayal) that it made this mini movie pogniant and is remembered. Kevin Joseph Gallery given name (actually a better stage name ironically than the one he used IMO), passed at 33 from AIDS.

Stop going after the bad boy Chads. Find a nice guy. Problem is the most woman find a nice guy as weak and predictable. Many of you say u want a nice guy. Yet u are attracted the bad boy. He is unpredictable and a challenge. Nice guys are not. I once had a woman who said that she liked that I was honest and straight forward. Then went on and said you need to be more mysterious. Another said you are genuinely a nice guy. She said she didnt know how to handle me. I said dont worry about trying to control and handle me. Just go with the flow. Glad u got out of ur bad relationship. Just learn from your mistake and dont get into a relationship like that again. Dont be like my neighbor. She is very attractive. 40 year old single mother now. Within a week of moving in to other side of duplex from me. Her bad boy tattooed bf tried to strangle her to death. Police had to kick down the door. But hey lets defund police right? Lucky police there. Cause I would have had to put the loser out of his misery. SO he gets arrested. She takes him back. Then police here over and over again. Ultimately she used a knife on him. She pounded on my door covered in blood. Turns out this guy served 6 to 12 yrs in jail for trying to stab 2 ppl to death. When i found this out. I barricaded my doors and made sure i had my berretta with me at all times. Shotgun loaded too. So he was to serve min of 2 yrs for trying to strangle her. He gets a yr. Then serves 2 months. Back out. 2 more crimes. In and out of jail. I hear her thru wall talking to him on speaker phn. SHe talks super loud. She says she loves him. Also is seeing other bad boy types. SMH!!! This is the typical woman who would look past a nice sweet guy like me, esp in her 20s. She is the one who kicks us in the balls. As of now. She has spoken to me perhaps 2 or 3 times in past year. She doesnt give me the time of day. She wouldnt know a good guy if she landed next to one. Dont be this woman!!!!!

Aimee Mann is a genius. This song is one of the greatest songs of the '80's. Also: Rest in Peace, Cully Holland -- gone far too soon.

@Michael Foley. I agree wholeheartedly. I was ridiculously fortunate to experience Ms. Mann, “back in the day”, meaning 1985/1986+. One night, as I was leaving Providence College, Aimee Mann was singing her heart out on this brilliant song of hers. I had seen her in Cambridge and Somerville, MA. However, walking across campus alone with my thoughts, then unexpectedly experiencing her power and magic, was a great moment in my life. Living in North Falmouth, Cape Cod, circa 1986,Voices Carry was the soundtrack of being carefree and 20 years old. Long live Aimee Mann. KT

I was a very young child when this song came out but she evoked so many amazing sentiments, I could tell some of what she was singing, an anthem and these 80s songs truly influenced my anthemic affinity for songs. No one says this but she is singing about a timeless topic isnt she? Women are interesting people too! She is sharing how she wont be oppressed even if she feels scared. That is how I feel when I hear this. Thank you Aimee for this amazing song.
