watching these professionals mortar and lay tile taught me an neat trick. They're placing the tiles very close together then moving them away after pressing down, reducing the tendency for the mortar to squeeze up between the tiles.

An adhesive lesson I learned in the lab: when you're gluing two dissimilar, hard materials together, use a mechanically-compliant glue; ie, polyurethane, not epoxy. Something has to be able to flex when temperature changes cause differential expansion. Another lesson: if you have two hard materials glued together and you want to get them apart, throw the whole thing into a bowl of liquid nitrogen. The differential contraction will break the bond - or else the whole piece will crack up, in which getting it apart is no longer a problem worth solving!

On top of the finished floor. After 30+ years of seeing what can happen when you don’t. On two occasions when I went to pull a toilet, my foot went down instead of the toilet going up. Tile can hide a lot of damage. And a huge no to 3” flanges and 4x3 wax seals. Water leaves the toilet at an angle and can splash upward because of the horn on a 4x3 seal. The seal is only good for odor and water vapor and should get replaced every 5 years. Some modern seals last longer but I’d replace within 5-8 years. Cheaper than redoing a floor or patching and painting a ceiling

It would depend on exactly what went wrong, but let's just say there's a reason why the continuity of the wire gets checked and double-checked before installation. Once the thinset has dried it's set in stone (pun intended) and if you want it out then the only means are destructive.

For the record, Schluter covers the cost of ripping up and replacing the tile if you follow their warranty requirements. It's not a fix, it's a replace.

Lol there is no way to fix it after the tile is in other than rip it out and start again. Which is why they recommend testing it for continuity before putting the tile down. Once it's in , it's in for good. There should be zero issues with the wire itself once it's in and not damaged.

I never bring the riser on a toilet above the floor on a rough in on a concrete slab. Why? Too many times I've had a ridge running through were the flange sits. It's not really the concrete finishers fault. When they level the concrete, the riser is in the way, making it almost impossible to make the concrete level.

I laid a heated floor in my basement hall, laundry and bathroom 8 years back and youtube taught me. The one thing that I did do that I haven't seen or heard from others about was to install two thermostats, this was for the possibility of one failing, I could just remove the control unit and switch wires, it will save you from tearing out the floor in the event of failure. @ 3.51 Hmm... I think you are actually wrong. The flange is supposed to sit on top of the floor surface. The toilet actually have an indent to accept the ~1/2" flange. The wax ring is not to make a water tight seal, but to prevent sewer gases to leak. That is why the flange should be on top of the surface. THen the toilet will "dip" in to the flange by ~1/2 inch.

This is fantastic and the attention to detail is impeccable. In reading through he comments and folks loving the heated floors, I didn't notice anyone mentioning the bench. A bench is meant to be sat on, correct? I installed a similar heated floor in my bathroom about 7 years ago - Loving it!! Being that my bathroom is too small, there is no bench for myself or the Mrs. If I had a bench however, I would prefer it to be warm prior to planting my god given naked rear end on it. Not sure if the heat element was extended to encompass the tiled bench; hard to tell from the video. Perhaps something to consider for the next shower project in case this bench is not "a hot seat".

What did you just say? Your comment about the height of the toilet flange is absolutely wrong. The flange should sit on top of the finished floor. Period, full stop. That puts it 3/8th of an inch up under the toilet bowl base. There's a horn on the bowl that extends down to be level with the base. This horn MUST extend in to the bowl wax for a proper seal. Anything else is unacceptable. Do not use a wax with a plastic horn already installed. If you have to use one of those, you've done it wrong. Master Plumber in the trade since 1975. I'm hoping you misspoke.
@BruceS42
@BruceS42 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think he misspoke. Looking at 3:39, it appears to me that the flange is below the surface of the tile, or as he put it, the tile is slightly above the flange. Not being an expert, I won't weigh in on whether the way he does it is right, or the way you say is right, but his description appears consistent with the way it's done in this video. And now I'm trying to remember how it was done by our contractor in a remodel of a bathroom, as well as how I did it in a more recent remodel of another bathroom. I *think* in both cases, there was a built-in plastic horn on the wax ring, but I could be mistaken.

@@BruceS42 I understand. It's as if It has become gospel. But, if you think about it... The water comes whooshing through the funnel like horn on the bowl. It's going generally down. but it's in a messy cone shape. It hits the beveled area below the flange.(if it's 3" ) Now water is splashing horizontally and slightly up. That's okay because this all takes place below the top of the flange. 3/8" below the top. With wax above the horn. That wax is for odor and airborne moisture. Not for droplets of water. I refuse to install a toilet if the flange isn't set at the proper height. And, I never use a bowl wax with the plastic insert. It's bad enough that one horn is at the wrong height. Why would I want another horn below it to increase the splash? It's crazy! Sorry, I've been screaming about this for 30 years.

Back about 30 years ago, the Paradise, California building department got the genius idea of requiring the toilet flanges on new homes to be installed on top out. Naturally, everyone screwed them to the subfloor. When the 3/8" MD board was installed by the flooring contractor, that put the flange flush with the finished floor. Within 5 years, every single house I did a service call on had a black stain seeping around the toilet under the vinyl floor. Why? Because, if the flange is flush with the finished floor, when the toilet is installed, the horn on the bowl would be just above the top of the flange. That horn must extend down in the flange. You can use all the bowl wax you want, but it won't prevent water from seeping horizontally under the wax and into the structure of the building. Using a bowl wax with the built in plastic horn just makes it worse. Now, you have the upper horn splashing on the lower horn, directing more water horizontally. It's said that a house gets destroyed from the bathroom out. You follow Essential's advice? A self fulfilling quote.

Jersey's the same, I think most places are that way. You need to have the flanges installed before rough-in inspection so all the flanges end up flush with the finished floor. Our method is we cut 1/2" copper pipe to 3/8" and use them as spacers to raise the flange up to finish floor height and it usually ends up okay, if it's close we double up on the wax rings. There's no alternative. If you don't put the flanges in for rough-in inspection, you fail inspection. One of the many things I disagree on with the inspection process. Flanges are designed to sit on top of the finished floor but yet the inspection process literally makes that impossible to do. Doesn't make much sense.
@TheNimshew
@TheNimshew 2 жыл бұрын
@@losferwords100 It's the inspectors. You could insist that a inspector come pass the flanges before setting toilets. Right! That isn't going to happen. The problem is that plumbers fudge by not using brass screws. It's interesting that, as far as I know, there's no requirement in the codes as to placement. I got really frustrated once and called Charlotte pipe. For liability reasons they refused to state where flanges should be installed. Pussies. Flange integrity, or lack of, is probably the #1 cause of plumbing damage to homes. Now that people are so much heavier and just plain bigger, it's gotten worse.

Enjoy your series but starting at 3:30 here your are spreading a falsehood, as approximately 7 other commenters have stated here, most stated they were professional plumbers as I am. Toilets are made with a 3/8 to 1/2 inch cavity underneath the base to accept the flange sitting "ON TOP OF" the finished floor. This way the "HORN" of the toilet bowl actually protrudes down into the flange opening. In your case, some flange extension rings should be used to bring the flange height up to the proper level (top surface 1/4 to 3/8 inch above the finished floor). Most toilet jobs I've been on won't have a flange on the job site until after the floor is done, just a plugged off 4 inch stub up for the toilet.

Great video as usual. Just wanted to make two corrections. All Schluter products including Ditra require an Un modified thinset because they are a non porous material and modified thinsets will not cure properly. Also the proper placement of a toilet flange is on top of the finished surface. If it is set below you will have to use an extension for the hopefully silicone and not wax ring to seat properly. As a professional you should follow the instructions from the company that has spent millions of dollars testing their products and warranties it. Wetting the subfloor is also so the wood does not wick the moisture out of the thinset (not motar) too soon. "Pros" like this are why I'm going to do my own tile, the right way.

@badlandskid
@badlandskid 2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking you don’t put any type of heat sensitive glue down type flooring over in floor heat. There are certain products that are made to install over a heated floor (mostly ceramic tile or other hard surface) but you should check with the manufacturer. With Schluter in floor heat we had the electricians run 110 or 220 depending on how large an area was involved. The power is brought to an electrical box in the wall as well as the heating element and a thermostat probe wire which is also laid under the tile. At the box a controller is mounted which connects the power, T-stat probe and heating element. The Schluter controllers are programmable and quite nice. Also if you need help figuring it all out they have a world wide hotline and they are quite helpful.

Sorry to say but, Mr Craftsman is dead wrong on toilet flange height. The bottom of the flange should be at finish floor height. Now the plumber will need 2 wax rings to seal it. It's called a floor flange because it should sit on the finished floor
@losferwords100
@losferwords100 2 жыл бұрын
You can have the flange flush with the finished floor as well. You just don't want it to end up below the finished floor. This one looks pretty close to being slightly below the finished floor but it's hard to tell for sure in the video. In new construction, the flanges are installed prior to the flooring so as a plumber, you have to raise the flange up to compensate for the flooring that's going down later and raise up the flange about 3/8" off the subfloor. And then the finished floor is installed around the flange so it ends up flush.

The membrane is coupled to the subfloor. The tile and thinset actually floats on the membrane. The thinset does not bond to the membrane, so it can shift. It is held down by the shape of the lugs.

@@micahrobinson1626 can you provide a link that says this? Every tile person I have talked to or read or watched (including those who have attended the in person Schluter training) says that thinset does not adhear to the membrane, rather it is a mechanical connection. @@micahrobinson1626 I think I found it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nK1mkpuaqq-6eqs.html. At 50 seconds in. You can see the tile and thinset bed sliding on the ditra. The ones that he uses the notch are the tile pieces cut around jambs. It can be easier in this situation, due to limited space, to just put flat thinset on the floor, then notch butter the back of tile.

@@mikeznel6048 not true.. He doesn't "double butter" the tile. If you pay attention after 4:00 there is no notched thinset on the floor in door jamb area.. Therefore he adds it to the back of of the tile. After that, when the floor opens back up he has notched thinset on the floor, then just simply back-butters the tiles with flat side of the tile. He is indeed doing two different things, as the OP pointed out.
