Just played this at BGGCON 2022 with 4 first time players of the game and we all agreed the gameplay was buttery smooth. The component color issues you mentioned were a slight issue for us at first, but the colors are beautiful for a Euro and drew us all in. Anyways it was in our top 3 games of the Con. I give it an 8.75 - 9 personally.

There's a wheel that allows you to pick dice, there's a king's favor track and you can move your wagon on the board to collect tiles to score points. All this against the backdrop of the Middle Ages. Fascinating and innovative.

Could the stated negative that you cannot plan ahead be reframed as a positive that player interaction matters? Maybe the particular style of player interaction in this genre is not liked?

Played at BGGCon2022. 4-player game that went very well, smooth turns (with a bit of fun, "don't touch my die!" moments). Easily an "Excellent" rating from me. The "AP" problem seems blown out of proportion compared to any other euro game.

As someone who likes a lot of different things in games that others like Tom might find annoying, I definitely agree with Chris and Wendy here. I love when u can theoretically do a lot of things in the game but have specific common scoring goals that set u on certain path. That simultaneously makes the games different and gives u the sense of direction. I also love action points as a mechanic, because I don't mind analysis paralysis and action points give me the sense of Power. The King track also doesn't bother me, as the chance of getting negative points makes u scared, which is both scary and pleasant. And despite what u said in the beginning, I can actually feel the theme of this game through its looks and mechanics. So overall seems like the game for me.
@johnbandettini9220

I do believe that analysis paralysis is caused by the players and not the game. I do play with mostly fast players though and I have played it several times now with four players and it’s never gone over 2 hours.

AP is never caused by players. It is triggered in players. A game can trigger a AP prone person. If your gaming group doesn't have AP prone people in it even a triggering game won't trigger them.

I thought Tom would like this more, not necessarily seal of excellence, but more. Pretty much ever negative mentioned here I was fine with, except I do agree on the King's Track. It sort of felt like "we want a fifth action." Just sort of extraneous to the rest of the game. And we always forgot to flip the discs each round. I strongly disagree with the criticism that the dice wheel isn't balanced where every action gets to be strong each game. That is just part of the variability of the game for me and you need to strategize around it.

Actually there is no series. People are just making this up. It's just the same publisher and the games happen to have T as first letter of the name and mostly it's the name of a (historical) place and most of them (but not all) use dice as components.

PS: Tiletum is a Belgian town. It is not French! It is the old name of a town which is now called Tielt. I have preordered this game, but I am thinking of about cancelling this now based on the review. There seem to be some valid points not making it a very good game which is unfortunate because it is made by two of my favorite designers

I think this review belies a fundamental lack of understanding of this game. Given how many games The Dice Tower reviews, this is understandable. I guess it comes with the territory of playing and reviewing so many games - they are whizzing by so quickly that its easy to miss the depth and nuance of any game. But the review is clearly a first impressions rather than a review coming from multiple plays. And thats ok - first impressions matter. But here are the things I heard that tell me a lot of nuance was missed: - Fairs are not necessarily mandatory. A good part of the game around the fairs is deciding which ones to participate in and which ones to forego for other, bigger scoring opportunities. - Fairs do not completely dictate your strategy. They are one scoring element of many in the game. Even if you only focus on fairs, you will have to do many other things in order to win. What those things are change from game to game due to high variability in the game's setup. - End game scoring is not lackluster and exceeds the scoring potential of most fairs. It is challenging but very possible to get six pillars and six houses out for 36 points. This meets the max possible for any fair. - Tom said something like (I'm paraphrasing), "and even if you go all in for end game scoring, the other players will score for those things too so your benefit will be blunted." This is literally true for every other part of the game as well. It is a game of differentials between players on all fronts - fairs, cathedrals, end game, king track, etc. - There is not a "once the leader always the leader" problem with the king track. The gap closes every round as players in the negative move back up to zero but the players in the positive stay where they are. Unless someone invests heavily in the king track, they won't stay ahead - and if they are doing that, they are paying opportunity costs elsewhere. - Speaking for the non colorblind, saying the dice color is "a huge problem" is a gross overstatement. This is such a minor issue and saying it is "huge" may put people off of a great game for a bad reason. All of the above (except dice color) are also a strong function of the huge amount of random setup. From one game to the next, what actions provide "meh", "good" or "great" payoffs will change and it is clear that the design intent was to present players with this variable set of tradeoffs to puzzle through.

Most European languages have similar pronunciations for vowels: A=ah E=eh I=ee O=oh U=oo They're rarely as long as they are in English, though. So my guess would be TEE-leh-toom. (German and the Slavic languages are like English in that they have different pronunciations for each vowel. But the differing sounds are usually accompanied by a diacritical mark - like the German umlaut - so if you don't see them, just use the Romance pronunciations above and don't draw any of the vowels out.
@olanmills64

I could feel my eyes glaze over during the overview. The dice selection mechanic is cool with the inverse resource and action points, but how they're used for the rest of the game where you do a bunch of random stuff to fulfill little point scoring formulas just seems super arbitrary and boring. I have Teotihuacan and Tekhenu, and I enjoy both, but I think I am just over these kinds of games. They take too long to set up and teach, and unless you only have a few games and you're playing these frequently, I feel like you forget a lot of rules and I you have to almost relearn the game again each time you play. I also have Tabannusi, but I haven't played that yet.

One of the most beige games to come out lately. Unoriginal, no theme at all and as Tom said, the amount of AP this game generates is insane. The King track particularly just felt like a tacked on element that's not even worth persuing.
@dean7713
@dean7713 Жыл бұрын
All elements in all games are 'tacked on' a game doesn't grow naturally from the earth. Every mechanism is every game was added to it. So I don't know why you're bringing it up. I think the theme shines through as much as any euro does, if you're moaning about that, I guess you hate euros in general? And AP is not the games fault. I played this with 4, and we were all new to it, and it was sub 2 hours. We all had a great time and can't wait to get it out again. Maybe I just like enjoying things 🤷‍♂️
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple Жыл бұрын
@@dean7713 "hate Euro's in general" - clearly someone hasn't seen my gaming shelf. And "tacked on" means more than you believe it does. There are games when the mechanisms make sense or flow into each other, then you get stuff like Trajan/Marakesh which is just a collection of mini games piled together in a box. The King track here feels like that - an extra mini game, where as the other aspects of Tiletum link and at least feel like they belonged together. Not to mention they are more fulfilling actions then just "move up track 2 spaces, end". AP yes is primarily down to players but if the game promotes the likelihood of AP, that is on the game. Some mid/heavy games can still be streamlined enough or have intuitive actions or capped length turns to the point where no-one is playing the waiting game. Tiletum has some turns which are 2 seconds long and other turns which involve the chaining of multiple tiles, bonuses, dice, etc that drag on because the individual has to reconcile the result of them all. That's the games fault. Tom's criticisms are on point here. Also I don't believe with setup/teach you got 4 players in 2 hours.

This game looks boring as hell. I dont get why people want to play games that just have a TON of stuff to do. I like games that are focused and your trying to achieve a particular objective. Not, Oh I can do this, and I can do this or I can do this for Points on this track and different points on that track...its just too much. Games should have a clear single focus. I'm not a fan of Point salad games, that have every known game mechanism thrown in just for the sake of throwing them in and then slapping a paper thin theme over it. This game is a strong "No thanks" for me.
