Just discovered this great movie, amazing. To think there was a day when Hollywood actually made good movies with real music and a roster of names that had real talent. Back in the day when society was more civilized and entertainment required talent instead of just special effects.

My Uncle Jim always sang Old Man River, it was his 'New Year song'. When I was young we had fantastic gatherings in our homes at Hogmanay In Scotland. Everyone had their own party piece. My mum's was O Danny Boy and so we all stood up at her funeral and sang it without music, it was so powerful, respectful and emotional. These songs were a big part of our childhood and identity. Oh you will be wondering what my song was... I wasn't confident enough to sing on my own but liked to join in with others. Thanks so much for uploading.

What a wonderful biopic of the life of one of the great contributors to the American songbook, Jerome Kern. I never realized the extent of standard songs that he contributed to our culture. Robert Walker was quite versatile in his portrayal of Mr. Kern. Of special note were Tony Martin singing "All The Things You Are" and Frank Sinatra's performance of "Old Man River" with that unbelievable finale.

How can one person create so much beautiful music? Not only does it take true desire, inner inspiration & a gift of talent ~ but the most important ~ is the right combination of ENCOURAGEMENT & APPRECIATION! Few of us have all these necessities, some of us don't have the entire combination or some of us never have the chance! Hurray for those who have outwardly shared their creative talent due to their gift, their support & their love!

Because since the 1960s the barbarians have become dominant in our schools, universities, Hollywood and the media. The minds of the young are deliberately twisted and stunted to the point where they have no appreciation for beauty, reason or optimism. They are offered depravity and horror and taught to laugh at decency, honesty and moderation.

As much as this film is made fun of, it's one of my favorite MGM musicals-- the "all-star" machine was in full swing in the 1940's, as was the candy-box Technicolor. Great to see Dinah Shore, June Allyson, Ray MacDonald, Van Johnson, Lucille Bremer, Cyd Charisse, Gower Champion, and Frank Sinatra in appearances foreshadowing their own film stardom. And of course, the "Show Boat" vignette at the beginning is quite mesmerizing, especially Kathryn, Tony, and of course, Lena. And all Kern music.

I know what you mean... it reminds me of the card playing scene from the movie "SUNSET BOULEVARD ", starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson. In the script, every week, the" old studio wax works" got together to play cards. William Holden narrates the movie, ala Ray Liotta in "GoodFellas"-- so, as Holden details this particular scene, the cameraman does these extreme modern day close -ups of stars who, just a decade before, were so famous that they didn't need any introduction, so , Holden doesn't introduce them. Instead, the camera just hangs there for 3-4 seconds, while the audience from the early '50s is supposed to "oooh & ahhh" in nostalgic awe ( which I guess they probably did...). My point ? I'll bet not one person TODAY could accurately recall just ONE name , or face, or definitive acting role, of just ONE of the card players . The ONLY face I recognized was Buster Keaton (& even my spell checker keeps correcting his name to "Mustard Meat On".... sigh). Anyway, all of the uber -- stars of today & -- God Forbid!-- last year-- beware. Humble yourselves. Nothing-- & no one~ lasts forever. Shoving the paparazzi rudely away, attractive actors/artists complaining about being thought of as sex symbols. ... couples refusing to admit that they're married or pregnant, etc... relax. Because one day soon, not one person will care, or remember. All we are is dust in the wind...🌾🌀

you realize that A LOT of actors from the 'golden age' of hollywood were also sex perverts. For one, you can find reports that Judy Garland (who is in this movie) was sexually assaulted by producers as a young girl. Errol Flynn, a prminent actor from the same time period, was also a well known pervert who recorded women using the bathroom in his house and had two way mirrors installed in the bedrooms so he could film people having sex without their consent. You made a very baby boomer-esque comment that's completely contradicted by the fact that hollywood actors have always been doing weird sex tape stuff in their spare time.

Though must say Frank Sinatra (no disrespect intended) at the end of this movie can't even hold a candle to the most amazing voice and soul of the African American man William Warfield who sang this in the 1951 version of Show Boat.

Amaya....personally never did think Sinatra or Dinah Shore were all that talented. Agree with you. The mafia hired girls to swoon over Sinatra, no different than the colonel hiring girls to scream for Elvis. By the time the Beatles came along the indoctrination was already ingrained. I never cared for Elvis or the Beatles either. Now Bobby of the Righteous Bros.....there was a truly great voice. And if you want to compare Kathryn Grayson and Judy Garland....Judy comes in second place.

The Latin Mass was the Mass in the 1940's, 1950's, and part of the 1960's. The English Mass came about in about 1968, or 1969. But when this movie was made, and came out, the Latin Mass was the Mass in all of the Catholic churches. Today, we have both the Latin (Extraordinary Form of the Liturgy), and the English Mass (Ordinary Form of the Liturgy).

The Maronite Catholic Church of Lebanon has said the Mass in Arabic since day one, long before Rome knew what it was all about.

At least Lena Horne got to do "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" in this film, even if they didn't use her for the full movie.
