Such a shame that investors are chasing technologies that are not possible to realize in near-term (e.g. AR contact lenses), while currently available tech like this struggles with funding 😕

She double dipped on this one, two kickstarters and only one was fulfilled. She's Dodgy, this isn't AR either. It's just a novel way to have a fixed screen

What a strange and off comment about double dipping on Kickstarter. I put money on both Kickstarters. We got refunds on the first Kickstarter. The second Kickstarter was delivered. Jeri is super respected in the Engineering and Maker communities.

This ease of interaction with the projections while having two or more people AND being able to look around is mind-blowing.

Is this in any way "hard coded" to be horizontal or could you mount it up as a display or sorts beside your regular screen as a 3d viewer?
@HypoceeYT
@HypoceeYT Жыл бұрын
Out of the box it assumes the board is horizontal, and that's the core environment developers have to aim for. But. 1. As long as the board edge is in view of the tracking cam, you can just add more retroreflective fabric wherever you want to render. A "quarter pipe" arrangement is a natural fit and has been in use since the beginning of the predecessor project CastAR ten years ago. 2. They've recently unlocked the capability to arbitrarily resize, translate, and rotate the tracking constellation in space, entirely transparently to client software. This enables hanging screens, miniboards and more exotic setups. Currently the first experimental version of the gameboard_transform tool is command line based, and only included with the (free, public) SDK download. In future versions they hope to make it friendlier and integrate it with the GUI glasses control panel.

You can mount the board and use the SDK to make a video player that assumes the board is vertical

This looks great. I wonder if the mixed reality video is partially misleading though: 1) wouldn't it be better to "cut" the superimposed AR with the shape of the gray area seen from the camera? my understanding is that the gray area is like a window that let's you see the virtual underneath. Also 2) the black colours, shouldn't they look pale, like any lcd projected image where the black level is the white colour of the background..Or am I missing something?

1) It's fair to be suspicious but this criticism comes up on every single MixCast video and it gets so tiring. There's a discourse right now on how to succinctly communicate in a watermark or something that yes, they thought of that and no, this is honest. MixCast clips the projection in a rectangular box above the board for simplicity. The height of that box was chosen to match the height that a user in a typical setup can see above the center of the board, so it oversells how high distant things can be and undersells how high nearer things can be. Clipping the projection as if the physical camera was wearing a T5 set would mislead in the opposite direction, and defeat the point of the software, by routinely not drawing the thing that the people in the shot can see and are looking at and manipulating. 2) Dynamic range is a wonderful thing. T5 is so bright that it can do the proverbially impossible in see-through AR and "draw black" by contrast where it doesn't project light. It's "perceptual" black, not cinemaphile LCD let alone OLED black, but it works. Like how a patch of "black" asphalt road in sunlight is actually many times brighter than the same patch on the full moon seen from Earth. twitter /javierdavalos/status/1471924000565596162 twitter /Taka_Yoshinaga/status/1627095037921349633 twitter /tacolamp/status/1423239634868310019 twitter /tacolamp/status/1521697306114166784

The contrast ratio is very high, so blacks look very black on our system vs additive AR systems.

The grey stuff is what you see on things like construction workers safety vests and roadside signs, if you have everything hit any of these with your car headlights you'll know how bright they are, they work by reflecting light directly back in the direction it's coming from

What software do they use to view the googles? It will be great for CAD colaboration
@HypoceeYT

They've put together an in-house CAD viewer which has been intended for public release "soon" for a month or two. They'd hoped to get it actually out the door last week but that didn't happen. Hopefully it's a matter of days away. Be aware that it is a viewer, not an editor. It allows repositioning of objects in a baked STEP or other file but does _not_ provide the ability to actually change dimensions and such.

Is TiltFive working on any games in-house? I really wish I had something fun to show people, since the kinds of experience shown here are only “fun” for a few minutes, and 3rd party stuff is typically just ports of flat or VR games that are fun, but don’t show off the true potential of this system… something competitive and multiplayer would be a blast, hopefully with a tournament mode so a large group could get by with only a few glasses. If anyone can recommend something like that, or knows about any upcoming releases that fit the bill, please let me know.

They're constantly working on small games and tools such as this STEP viewer in-house, and publishing them along with fan projects to "The Lab" on the site. They don't remotely have the staff and experience to develop full-fledged games, so they're throwing lots of their capital at second parties for ports and developments. Crootquet on the Lab is competitive local. Takenoko is the first commercial game designed from the start for T5, an adaptation of the board game by Blazing Griffin who had previously ported their Murder Mystery Machine. BG are also adapting Catan for later this spring.

*Readers added context they thought people might want to know* Technical Illusions/CastAR gave back the Kickstarter money when they found a big VC buyer and plans changed. Tilt Five certainly involves a few of the same people, but is a new company. CastAR the company is rotting on a hard drive in Delaware and was not for sale. During bankruptcy the T5 founders bought their patents - only - back at auction from the bank to which they had been mortgaged. T5's KS wrapped in late 2019, a couple weeks before the first reports of a new kind of SARS emerging in Wuhan. This went on to cause _some difficulties_ in hardware manufacture. T5 shows the user interactive computer-generated 3D objects at the same time as an optical view of the real world. There may or may not be a term for that. As "nothing more than" "a novel screen" which displays an individual stereo view over a very large and cheaply extensible surface to arbitrary numbers of users in arbitrary positions with an included 6DOF controller for interaction, while preventing the harm of vergence-accommodation conflict which other companies are dropping billions trying to solve, this technology is obviously ipso facto uninteresting garbotrash.
