I am guessing changing agents was a ploy he was talked into to push up his contract value, and the front office was ready to immediately change gears. DJJ could never be a playmaker nor create his own shot - a big weakness that was exposed by tougher defenses in the playoff run. Marshall is substantially better with the ball, and is a much better shot maker in the paint. I think the Mavs wanted to bring Jones back, but the moment there was a crack in the plan they jumped immediately for a better more complete player. Sure they may miss out on some blocked shots or a few highlight dunks, but they are going to be stronger for the change.

Agree except I think the agent switch was a slightly different plot…I believe Klutch brought him an offer of $10m which was more than the $9m the Mavs had offered and the agent switch announcement was time to tie the Mavs hands in free agency and make it easier for the Lakers/Lebron to get Klay…credit to Nico as he pivoted quickly and didn’t get stuck in the trap 👌

Finally someone with a minimal degree of intelligence, DJJ was not that guy.

The “DJJ is the best defender” narrative is lazy. DJJ didn’t become that defender until PJ and Gaff showed up. The WHOLE team is the defense. Not just DJJ…

I’d say peak defence went a bit down but average defence went up, while shooting went up quite a bit!

Will the Mavericks ever bring back the Navy Blue and Silver 2000s Dallas away jerseys? There’s a ton of fans that would like it back at least as a throwback.

DJJ struggled at times last year in regular season and was in and out of lineups before really becoming crucial as a POA defender. Which is just to say as good as he was, he was also part of why it was a 5 seed, not a 2 or 3 seed with more home games. Agree with Cato that Mavs got better but will have to see how rotation shakes out.

People really hate to admit that the reigning Weatern Conference Champions got even better!😂 DJJ was great for us especially in the playoffs but my god are people overrating his value. This guy barely played 20 mpg after we traded for Gaff & PJ and became the best defense in the league the last 3 months😂 Can’t replace his athleticism because he’s one of the best in the league in that department but it stops there. Give me Naji Marshall over him any day! You don’t lose much on D and you get a much better playmaker,3 pt threat, and just a better overall offensive player. We lost in the finals because of our offense not the other way around! The concerns for LuKai on D are overblown as if these guys didn’t by in and help the defense make the finals? Also Klay’s demise on D is greatly exaggerated because now he will be asked to do less on offense and has two legit rim protectors behind him at all times. LET THEM SLEEP!!

I’m ok with DJJ leaving and I truly believe Nicco is as well. If Klay was on the Mavericks roster last season with DJJ what is DJJ’s role? Which player is more valuable? I believe DJJ would be a better fit as a backup. I believe he will be force fed minutes and still not be a 37/39% 3point shooter. He’s not/never been a facilitator or floor spacer and we can’t act as though he can neutralize a top 10 perimeter scorer. I thought he played well for Dallas but so would a lot of players playing with Luka Kyrie and crazy athletic big men in GAF and DLive. To me DJJ is a much better athlete than most players but not as good as a basketball player than most players. His role for the Mavs was glorified because of who he played with. When they played Boston he had no way of standing out because he’s very limited offensive wise.

Only people that feels like DJJ is this huge loss and difference maker are the people who only watched the Mavs against their team in the playoffs! We maxed out DJJ’S full potential credit to him and the rest of the team for putting in the work allowing that to happen, but bottom line Naji Marshall and of course Klay Thompson are much better fits and overall players for the Mavs to take one more leap moving forward. Mavs will be the NBA Champions in 2025 quote me👌

I still dont get it fully why Jones left. With Green and Hardaway gone, there should have been plenty of minutes for him. His strength and skillset is different to Thompson. Klay might have been the starter. But i am still surprised Nico couldn't find a solution with Jones. I dont think money was the problem.

They said Jones changed agents which caused a 15 day waiting time for the Mavs to make an offer. Nico settled for a plan B which is good rather than waiting and missing out on other FREE AGENTS.

Cato literally brought nothing to the table. Analysis that anyone with google could get. Like wow nothing. Nothing. What did Cato say that was even remotely informative?

Disagree with Cato on team need. It seems obvious this offense works best with two ball handling, playmaking point guards on the court together who are good at protecting the ball and are competent shooters. It seems there may be 2 free agents somewhat fitting the bill: Dinwiddie and Tyrus Jones.

To Beat a team like Boston we need speed, look what IND did in the playoffs almost beating Boston in 3 games. + if Luka start getting better at catch and shoots and stop been so tentative(sending a doubt message) and probably he won't need the ball in his hands all the time allowing or sharing the ball with a smaller guard that can run the floor leaving defenders behind = OPEN SHOTS

I do not understand the logic. You do not play Luka, Ky and Klay At the same time Due to lack of defence. Therefore, he won’t be shooting those threes of our role Missed. We will have to sub Klay in. All the while Boston can play, it’s five best players at the same time all game if they need to. I don’t see it yet

Jones Jr will regret that decision forever. He'll receive so much hate playing for LeBron. Especially when he'll miss important open shots

No he literally will not. You’re projecting your own insecurities onto another man you don’t even know. Fans think NBA players are ALL dying to win a championship. A lot of these guys came from literally nothing and just want to secure that big payday for their family and are willing to go wherever to get it. He did that. He’s ALOT happier than you think. LOL.
