Jazel Diodonet the youth academy systems frm the MLS are non existent or poorly structured. Having more frequent open try outs for children has to be much more accessible. Let me just state the facts and say that not every child wants to go to a university. It's true. Some just want to play and if they have the true talent and the passion, why not just get them in a academy and develop the player? Then perhaps give him a professional contract from even the age of 16 or 17(if he's really that good). This is what all the leagues in south. America, Europe and Mexico do. I'm not stating anything new. But the US just likes to do shit way more complicated and do their stupid draft shit treating the sport like as if it was American football or basketball..also, teams need to invest in young talent from Europe, South America, Africa Asia and Mexico. And also get players with top level experience, not these old ass washed up players like Beckham, lampard, Ashely cole, drogba, villa, just to name a few. They need young and experienced players that are from ages 21-29. Pay the big money for them.

Leather Boot Room and college sports are what make all other American sports greater than other countries, for example college basketball, kids play all through high school, the play 4 years of competitive basketball at the next level(90% of American college basketball players could play pro overseas by the way, plenty of people do it even in d2 colleges) and look at the popularity and the excitement in college football and basketball, the final 4 for NCAA men's basketball is played in front of 60,000 people, that's a college event

Jazel Diodonet Although I think there’s some truth to what you say, the problem is that American kids don’t grow up dreaming of making millions in MLS. They see baseball, basketball and football players raking and getting all of the notoriety, so that’s the direction they want to go. Not all kids, of course, but the fact remains that our best athletes do not play soccer. That’s all there is to it.

The reason it's "pay to play" is because there is no financial benefit for the US youth elite club soccer system to foot the entire living expense bill for a young player to be properly trained and developed... European clubs can do it, because they basically take ownership of that young player and can turn around and sell him to another club down the road and earn a profit for their initial investment... besides, clubs can be so wealthy they can afford to invest in developing players anyway. But in the US system, a player is not "owned" by anyone until they sign a professional contract with a team... This means any young developing player is totally free to go anyplace he wants to once his training is complete... the youth club system gets nothing out of it.

Daniel RRNC Yes and no. Draft is cool cause guaranties some sort of parity, however it has many downsides. The normal system basically handles itself. Yes, the richest teams buy the best players, however weaker teams have the chance to get better by improving players and selling them for a high price so they can buy better players. I think a balance between the two systems is needed. MLS just doesnt work, but in Spain or Germany there are pretty much only two teams fighting for the league. By the way, loved Netherlands, I was there a few months ago. Greetings from Argentina.

Leagues in Europe already perfected the system. If the college system worked they would had done it already. At the college age good players are already playing at pro lvl and they do not have time for something else than training resting and training again , playing matches that require to move from one place to another. 21 years old is kinda too late to go pro. The gap would be too wide.

Swingro The European system is far from perfect. The draft/college system is a much more effective system for society. The reality is that the vast majority trying to make it as a professional fail. A lot of those who fail in Europe have then a disadvantage because many drop out of school/higher education to concentrate on making it where as in America a lot of them who are trying to be pro get Top Educations at College and can just go straight into great jobs if they don't make the draft or want to pursue it. The Draft/College system makes so much more sense and in general is how you would do it if someone was designing a perfect system. The reason it isn't implemented in Europe and the World for Soccer is that there are soooo many different countries/legislations/languages/leagues that it would be a disaster doing one draft and College system for it all. The US has complete control over it all because American Football doesn't really have many teams compared to Soccer and it isn't really an international Sport. Americans do not realize how BIG soccer is. It is a Mammouth task trying to govern it all.

I don’t think people realize how it is changing in America. As a kid I never saw other kids playing soccer at a place like the beach for example. They’d always be throwing a football or playing whiffle ball and the basketball court would have a pick up game going on. Every year since the 2014 World Cup that I’ve taken a walk down the beach I was amazed that every 100 yards there were kids kicking a soccer ball around. I saw more groups of people kicking soccer balls around than throwing a football on an American beach for the first time in my life. Howard is right, people need star athletes in their face to want to be like them. The 2014 World Cup was huge here, everyone I know was keeping up with it. It definitely inspired people and most importantly young children who have time to train and become great players

Getting the sport popular within other areas like the inner cities will definitely help to increase the level of competition at the youth level. However, the argument that some people make about the best athletes being in the NFL and NBA instead of soccer is a terrible argument. The average NBA player is like 6'7". Only a fraction of those NBA players are a fit for Soccer. The NFL is similar, and there are many positions in the NFL that don't require high dexterous-type skill. If you're the right type of phenomenal athlete, you can make the transition to the NFL (like basketball players that play Tight End). Some players don't even play football until later in high school and still make the NFL. Soccer is the opposite across the world. Young players turning professional

Soccer is so expensive here in southern California. To play top level you are looking at well over 2000+ to play (not including AYSO). This expense creates a social divide between financial class, I hate to say it but soccer is becoming a rich kid sport like Tim, mentioned. I am a rugby player with a huge passion for soccer, of course I will be the first to admit that rugby is not even close to popular as soccer is, but we are growing. Rugby is growing at an alarming rate, and IMO because of how inexpensive it is to play. Soccer is such a beautiful game plus here in the USA we have so much talent to pull from in all communities. If the prices stay how they are to play top level we will see kids stuck in Sunday league because their parents cant afford them to be in club soccer.

College soccer needs more promotion, youth clubs need to stop trying to be rich people only (it costs around $300 a SEASON to play in Clubs where you get scouted). City and Town soccer get little no scouts. Colleges need to team up with MLS to promote players development, Kids need to be hit with college fever YOUNG, I gave 2 shits about soccer when I was young and now Im 17 and cant get enough of the sport, but because I didn't get into it when I was young I had no time to grow. Its true that if US's greatest athletes got more promotion of the sport and were given opportunities (even if poor) US soccer would have more top players. But we don't grow up with the sport, or watching the leagues, When I was 10 I only knew 4 players, Messi, Ronaldo, Donovan and Beckham. I would never watch a game because I simply not interested in it, Basketball and Football was just.... More appealing. I only wish more promotion and less money was needed for Soccer, maybe then at-least, I would have had a bigger chance.

Youth clubs make no money or very little, Ticket and shirt sale? NONE! Regulations on youth players contracts make it Impossible to make money, college soccer gets no views, little reason to give out scholarships to good players, Players who try and play in travel soccer(Town based soccer where you verse other towns at little to no cost) get no where, the coaches are usually parents or have little credentials. Money wise, people play for fun, but to get somewhere is hard. There needs to be more then just the draft. College soccer means NOTHING, no one cares or watches it meaning colleges have little reason to give players scholarships. To make MLS and US soccer in general more appealing and producing better players they need to.... PROMOTE and INVEST, FIGHT REGULATIONS and RE-STRUCTURE all major soccer leagues in the States.

to go even further, Brazilian' don't even have a football, they use anything they can get their hands on to play a game, and they rarely have grass or even sufaces to play on, poor concrete or glass ridden layby's are standard. In UK, and most of Europe, as opposed to US schools (i went to HS but not middle school in US) tend to have 2 breaks, one at 10ish for 15 minutes and later lunches around 1215-1300 and you play soccer all year round during those breaks, on top of gym class, after school soccer, in the streets after school and club soccer. One of my middle schools in uk banned footballs so I played with a tennis ball an hour a day for 2 years. The US after school soccer programs are amazingly in depth, even compared to the best UK high school programs, because there is no college incentive to play/organise it, but there is too much downtime inbetween november and august where you lose a lot of what you work on, and over structuring like Tim said, pouring money into it doesnt always need to be the way. EXACTLY, The only way to play for little to nothing is City/Town based games(Travel), but the issue is these coaches have little certification. Thats because youth contracts are illegal(at-least, the important aspects), limiting these clubs ability to make money. In soccer the only way to get scouted by colleges is in High school(In big games) or Clubs(Costing around $300 a season). Its simply stupid, scholarships for the sport are hard to come by, with promotion for College soccer abysmal. To get better athletes in American Football we need to fix the youth to High-school to college structure. When student at college hit 22 they should already be well known. The draft is important to American's because it allows for the sport to remain equal, the Prem, LaLiga, Bundesliga and all other leagues are ultimately rigged for only 5 teams to win and continue dominance for 10 years. Overall if the Soccer in the US in general gets a major rehaul then in 15 to 20 years we can see MLS rival big leagues, Money is not the issue in MLS, player quality is. USMNT can potentially win the World Cup in 30 years if the poor/rich structure is changed.

The U.S has so many young kids with so much talent and potential. Unfortunately most of this kids do not go to college or universities for many reasons and there goes the future of American soccer. MLS only focuses on colleague soccer players which many of them just play because they are able to afford college and play soccer, doesn't mean they are great players. The day the US becomes a soccer regional powerhouse is the day the look outside the box for soccer players. Keep in mind most of the world soccer players stars never finished or attended school. The US is full of huge diamonds buried underground but only accepting clean cut small diamonds.

I strongly believe you guys can benefit from the current Japan Coach. After the worldcup you should absolutely get him. His name is Vahid Halilhodzic. He knows how to build a team from the ground up. He took on Algeria in late 2010 and built a team from scratch, instilling discipline and verve. During the 2014 worldcup Algeria went through the group stage for their first time in history and lost a 120 minutes match against Germany of all sides loosing only 2-1. You should totally rewatch the highlights of that match or even the entire match. That was outstanding. He now is in Japan looking for a challenge and within 3 months pinpointed all of the issues of the Japanese Style. And instilled his own football . I don't know if Japan would do anything the next worldcup to be honest but it's something to keep an eye on .I totally see him leading the USA team. He would instill a different mentality . It'd be exciting to see.

I agree with Tim, inner city is where the most talented players are, and that's because Soccer is not a corporate after school program as in most suburbs where the typical soccer mom drives their kids to school practice, not that there's nothing wrong with that but in inner cities kids not only play soccer because is a school thing, they constantly play it on weekends, holidays, during summer when school is out, on baseball, basketball fields, parks, parking lots, you name it the competition is fierce, and the drive to be better is there.

My take on it; it's all about PASSION .....and being patient. The time will come. I was born and raised breathing and drinking "soccer", I'm from Mexico and travel for work back and forth to South America and couple times to Spain and England. Lived for years in the States and learned to appreciate the sports life in the USA, and yes, Americans are one of the most sports-oriented community. The U.S. is like a sleeping giant, there's an immense potential for a soccer culture to be developed and in a few more years and with thoughtful planing, the greatest sports business men and soccer athletes will turn their heads to North America . It's just a matter of knowing how to tap into the soccer PASSION.

Biggest problem i think is that in America it is seen as a game for the middle/upper middle class as its my understanding that it costs a lot to play. Whereas in Europe, south america etc it is a game for the working class and the peoples game so growing up it costs nothing to play with mates or random people on the streets, at the park etc, and doesn't cost that much to get into a team

I hate the "quality athletes not playing the game" thing. The type of athlete that would be successful in football isn't playing other sports, necessarily. LeBron might be a good keeper, but I don't see his athleticism, skill transferring over well to the sport. I just don't buy that argument. It's a structural/training thing. The athletes are there. Who says that Jozy or Pulisic or Kellyn Acosta or Yedlin are inferior athletes to the best European or South American players? We don't lack the athleticism. We lack the training and infrastructure. It is vastly improving from a coaching/technical side. That argument is absolutely flawed.

USA is no where near ready to sustain promotion relegation. No American investors will purchase an MLS team just to watch it go to USL and only a few USL markets could even come close to filling an MLS stadium. I would love pro-rel here, but we are 10 years away from that reality at least. It is a vast overstatement to say that the MLS is still a "cash big checks" league for aging stars. Look at three of the best players in the league: Diego Valeri, Seba Giovinco, Ignacio Piatti. All three players came to the MLS with many years left to play (Diego and Seba both in their primes) and now players like Almiron, Martinez aren't even to their prime yet. Other notables (Jonathan Dos Santos and Carlos Vela) are joining in on the party in their mid-late twenties. If you think it's still a "retirement league", you aren't watching.

1.50 exactly the mentality that will continue to leave American "soccer" in the dirt. Football is 80% skill and intelligence ,20% athleticism. This is why the Spanish are dominating European football. The only athletic ability needed is good stamina, only a few positions favour good pace and even then you can thrive without it. Players who relied on athleticism are the ones who peaked early and died out early.

Zip it up because in the predictability of basketball, if the world had a champions league for basketball I assure you the team who wins the the NBA championship will win it, you can’t say that about football because one luck can have a bigger affect on a game than it can in basketball, that is due to the skill of basketball. If the teams with the best player constantly win than you can tell the the skills gap plays a bigger role and it takes more skill because you have to find a way to score the ball numerous times against huge athletic freaks.

Similar situation in Australia. Other more established sports dominate , but the situation is changing. Talented young players have to go overseas to get experience at top level clubs and make a good living. The USMNT and the Australian national team are similar in that they can field good quality players, but National training camps for international games are difficult , with players spread across Europe and elsewhere, as most clubs will not release players mid season to represent their country, in anything other than World Cups. Unlike other sports, this is a physically democratic sport, where various physical types and builds can play at a good level, and in particular for women, where high quality competitive competitions are in place, and the U.S is currently World Champion, and a Women’s World Cup taking place this year.

The elitist mentality of the USA means that soccer will always be behind. You think the Africans or South Americans or Europeans recruit from colleges ?? Go to the suburbs, the ghettos, the streets, parks, WHEREVER and hold trials to look for potential or have city sessions, all walks of life invited. You get the skills and ball control going at an early age, positional play and mentality develops as you get older, then you have a player. Trying to teach the game at 18-20 is too late. Football is one of the cheapest sports to play only thing that costs is the ball and trainers ( doesnt always have to be played on grass) !!

Interesting video. I think the absence of promotion-relegation will hold back American soccer forever. There are 8 leagues in England connecting the big name teams to the smallest of small local teams. There is a clear path to the top with plenty of opportunities for players and clubs. What is the incentive in the US to start (and seriously invest in) a local team knowing there is 0% chance of making it to the MLS if you cant afford the $100m entry fee?

Americans don't like cheering for teams that aren't considered "the best" or "at the top." MLB baseball has huge crowds of tens of thousands every match but lower league baseball teams struggle to get 10,000 fans to a game because fans would much rather cheer for the upper tier and richer clubs. No American soccer team would put in the time and money to get into the MLS if there is a risk to their investment, relegation is that risk. Soccer clubs are a business and businesses that don't make money go under.

There is no lack of talent. The trouble is that we judge athletes like the NFL Draft. Athleticism trumps skill, technique, and knowledge. It should be the other way around. Soccer is too competitive too young. By the time a kid reaches 14 he or she is burned out. Youth soccer should be about developing skillfull players. That is too hard for most coaches, so they only choose players that have size or speed so they can win games. All well and good, but don't expect to compete with the top players in the world that have tremendous skill. A guy like Messi would get passed up by most coaches in the United States if he lived here.

Many of his opinions can be challenged. Big salaries are a major motivation to make it to the big leagues in any sport. I didn't pursue playing at college level in the early 90s cause didn't see any future in it. Ousmane Dembele, a 20 yr old Frenchman of African descent, just made a $125 million base contract with FC Barcelona. But now aging (and late-prime) players are eyeing massive salaries with Chinese clubs, while before that they were all talking about coming to America. We had Pele playing with the NY Cosmos before he retired, now don't even expect to get someone like Tevez. At current rates, any good players will be tempted to play in Europe or China, not USA, like rising star Christian Pulisic at Dortmond.

You have the people, the athletes, the money, you just are not very good at finding them. It's a case of looking for a needle in haystack. Make it easier to find them and all will be good.

Its not about size. Croatia has only 2 million people but reached the world cup finals. Its about playing as a team. Messi and Ronaldo have never won any world cups if you think about it

In all countries where football is the number 1 sport, kids get together and just grab a ball, play until it gets dark. In the US, AYSO has two one hour practices a week, then a game on Saturday. Everything is planned and dependent on parents schedule and participation. You don't see groups of kids playing by themselves (no parents and no scheduled practice), in the parks, alleys, parking lots etc. Kids don't learn with two short practices and a parents coach who has little experience in the sport. The US will always be small in soccer/football. And the MLS will always depend on washed out former stars to get attention.

At the end of the day, "Soccer" is not cultural in the US. In most European countries, football is intrinsically tied to the places and the people that play it. It's more about the team than the sport itself. That's why people love to play it and watch it, because of the sense of identity that goes along with representing or following a team that is tied to a particular place with it's own history and culture and idiosyndracies. I'm English and tbh football when I was a kid was not really played during P.E. but at breaktime after after school that is what all the boys wanted to play. No-one had to encourage a young boy to want to play football, they just did. It's hard to manufacture that kind of love for the game. Not that the US shouldn't try, but if it becomes the sport of the rich and privileged or people from big Cities only that will not only be a damn shame but will severely dent it's prospect of competing globally.
