I love the little smile Tim gives when the girls sing their first line - you can tell this is absolutely a passion project for him. So hoping Matilda tours Australia again so I can take my 11 year old before she's all grown up.

I just went to see a senior high school production with my son who is nearly 8. The singing wasn't perfect, but he loved it anyway and so did I.

I was obsessed with Matilda as a little girl and I now have a 5yr old daughter who loves it too, but I must admit that rereading it with her has shocked me at just HOW dark it is. No wonder I was such an odd child, I was weaned on Dahl from a very young age!

Dahl’s books were dark. Everyone goes on about Coraline but The Witches fuckin traumatised me as a kid and Charlie and the Chocolate factory was basically saw for children

Tim's lyrics completely capture what goes through a child's mind when thinking things so big, that are much less important as an adult. Quite the lesson for many of us, and very fond memories.

I love Tim smiling as the Matildas start to sing, and also that he modulates his voice to match. Kids larynx's are changing all the time - which makes it difficult to hit a "pure" note - here they are slightly sharp at the start and then slightly flat half way through (notably 5.00) - but even though Tim is the star - he's meeting their pitch. It takes a minute, but by 6.00 its there

This interview is rough when you realize that only two years later, the animated musical movie that he dedicated four years of his life towards would be cancelled by new execs at Universal due to "reassessment" at the company. Hans Zimmer was even working on the score with him, and names like Hugh Jackman, Margo Robbie and other huge names from Australia were on the project as well.

Tim Minchin is a genius, an absolute genius. You know, when he was a kid he wrote to Roald Dahl to ask him if he had sold the performing rights for the story to anyone. There was a special on TV about Tim and I will never forget him talking about Matilda and being a kid..... He described how he cannot walk past a playground without getting on the swing...... It's that mindset that created this production. For many years, Les Miserables was by far my favourite stage musical. Matilda is now the show i'd see again and again and again. I saw it for the first time with my daughter a few years ago in Melbourne. My eyes had tears in them the whole show, it's just that beautiful......... I can't wait to see more productions that Tim gets involved is.

Saw the girl on the right on tour at the Kennedy Center in DC. I'd literally been a father for just over a month at the time, and it really put things in perspective seeing a kid that young being the center of a huge performance. It gave me a newfound appreciation for child actors and singers. The pressure alone has to be overwhelming.

I don't know why I didn't think Tim Minchin wouldn't be good at making kids songs but holy shit was I wrong. That song was great. I really enjoy how it flips back and forth between the when i grow up -> ill be able to deal with grown up things because ill be grown up. It's telling kids that they will have the insight to deal with issues that are currently out of their control. To not be overwhelmed by the issues that seem scary because one day they will know what to do.

That is a really sweet interpretation of the song. My own interpretation is a lot sadder, and I think that is the true genius of this song - I feel like your interpretation is how children are supposed to hear the song. Meanwhile, the sad truth is that "being a grown up" isn't some magical thing that changes you. As an adult you face many obstacles and problems, you still lack bravery, you still only do as well as you can and you got to hope for the best. This song perfectly encapsulates how children think adults know everything and have control of their lives, and adults know it to be an illusion. I think my interpretation is especially backed by how a verse is sung by ms honey, who obviously is already a grown up, showing how she like most adults really feels still like a child inside and still waits for the magical time when she will "grow up".

@@theWebWizrd isn't it just brilliant. Hidden in the upbeat jaunty tune is one of the saddest threads, this song often almost reduces me to tears: I think it has a lot of ways of viewing it. One thing I find powerful is that the hopeful ambitions of the children (eating what they want, watching tv endlessly, staying up late) are all things that the adults in the background of the play are doing: lazily sitting around, watching TV and eating what they want staying up late. The juxtoposition of the realities of adulthood vs how the children hope for it hits me like a ton of bricks every time. I also think it challenges every adult listening to hold up a mirror and see if they became the adult their childhood self hoped for - we all remember that feeling of wishing we could stay up late, well now we can: is it as fun as we thought it would be? Why not? When did we stop wanting to climb trees, as if not being tall enough is the only thing that gets in the way of it. All of this wrapped up inside this seemingly simple playful song. I just love it.

To a person who has dealt with lots of depression and pain and just generally suffered through life.... This song is like a knife in the heart...As kids we think everything is so black and white, everything is good or bad. You have a vigor for life and you wake up loving, happy, and enjoying the simple things in front of you every day....But the older you get the more you realize everything is more grey than black or white, and the good and bad are not as easily defined. Happiness becomes harder and harder to feel or attain. And all the while... the parents who had children, know all of this, know the struggle, know the journey.... but we can't warn them of whats ahead.... because they are so innocent and have everything we wish we still had... and there's no way we are going to ruin that by warning them about what the future holds.... The heartbreaks you will go through, the pain, struggle, and wars you endure just to stay alive. Even warning them of what the future holds gives no hostage to fortune, for they are experiences you have to live yourself to fully understand. Its so paradoxically painful....I can't listen to this song without feeling completely overwhelmed emotionally because of the dualities it raises in my mind....

@@dicarpio2177 I know the song originally was written as a happy children's song for a play but it has many more meanings based on who is consuming the media. It definitely does remind me of a wonderful and happy childhood when things where less complex and dark, but it also makes me think of that pure innocence that we lose as the world throws us into paradoxes and conundrums that have no real right answers as we grow up. I don't think Tim intentionally laced this reflective ideal within the song on purpose, I think it's just a by-product of jaded adults like myself remembering what pure joy and happiness was as a child, and how easy it was to attain at one point. It's really a bitter sweet feeling.

those three girls are incredible !! I don't think I've ever heard such musicality come out of tiny people. Sure there are those precocious singers who blow us away every time, but they sing solo and so you only need keep track of one rhythm but these there were in perfect sink with each other, on their own, with Tim and the piano AND with keeping the song intact while Tim was going bananas on the piano. Just incredibly beautiful !

For such young kids their accent is so amazing. As a brit I enjoy finding the bits not polished (such as an over pronounced r) and bits they nailed (saying 'I'. I've never seen people doing an English accent do it as well as them).
