175: Researcher and author Tim Wise shares his deep knowledge of the Green Revolution and its misleading claims to solve world hunger through chemical agriculture and government policy. While most of us think of the Green Revolution as movement from the past, Tim raises awareness that it is very much alive today across the globe, most notably in Africa.
Tim Wise is a writer, researcher and speaker, and the author of Eating Tomorrow: Agribusiness, Family Farmers, and the Battle for the Future of Food. He is a Senior Advisor with the Small Planet Institute and a Senior Research Fellow at Tufts University’s Global Development and Environment Institute. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations).

We believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront.

Good interview, it’s curious and ironic that the green revolution had its propaganda scene in the second omen movie. Profit from famine, anyone familiar with the green house scenes and the chemical spill they’re in, and the inner conflicts in the company, reminds me of a Monsanto greenhouse. It makes one wonder how they knew, and fiction becomes reality. All you have to do is put the Gates name in for Thorn industries, very striking similarities. Vandana Shiva is another great source for the history of this issue.

Robert Kennedy Jr has fought them in court and when he becomes President we'll have more regenerative and organic farming. I follow his ch and website.

Tim, thank you for a wonderful discussion. I agree with the vast majority of what you’re saying. However, I think your miscarries corruption. It’s equally corrupt it just takes a slightly different form. Until we focus on a decentralized food system that’s collective in nature we can’t get beyond this. no regenerative farming system can work, unless a piece of land is allowed to evolve overtime. This requires each piece of land to go through periods of disruption in recovery. This means that there are periods during which a farmer will not be able to sustain himself from his land, but needs to rely on his relationships with other farmers in his community in order to allow the land to evolve properly. It’s a change of mindset. It’s a change of political attitude. These are not gonna be easy transitions, but these will be necessary if we hope to evolve into a truly sustainable or regenerative model. The politics is corrupt on every level is not much we can do about that other than to heed the words of Buckminster Fuller, and invent and demonstrate a new system, which makes clear the obsolescence of the existing model

Are we, in America able to grow healthy food again? or have we destroyed that possibility by destroying the soil and lack of water.

Can all be reversed in short order by incorporating and rebuilding the depleted biology in the soil again. The soil sponge could be restored in 5 years time and climate change reversed to the point that fossil fuel use probably wouldn't even need to be worried about. Listen to Walter Jehne hydrologist from Australia lay it out on KZfaq.
