I can totally relate to this mare. I am training a 4 yo mare that has been doing the same things. My girl (teenager) was a pampered girl that got away with many things, but not with me. If I didn't know any better, I would say that's my horse! I have been doing many of the same things as you, which has made a big difference in my mare's respecting and listening to me. When you are done training Kate, she will be one awesome horse! Thanks for harping on her to collect. I could see the changes in her by the end of the video.

Kate is such a pretty mare. I think she wants a leader she can trust and has found that in you, Tim. I like her attitude and am looking forward to watching this pretty girl's progress.

Temperament can be an issue, that is for sure. I was once told by a QH breeder that a spayed mare has more strength and heart than a gelding. Breeding here also comes into play. Your training approach will work here! Being aware and reading her so well is key. Watching her grow up is gonna be fun!

Love your comment about mares. I have an Arabian mare that I wouldn't sell for any amount of money. She gives me everything every time. Have geldings that on their best days will give 85%.

I have heard lots of folks talk about their preferences, mares, or geldings, but not why. You have just filled in a gap in my knowledge with you explanation of how it's a mental difference. Some interesting things in this video for me. A few things I have never heard before regarding behaviors. I have had both mares and geldings over the years , never had a preference as all were very easy to train . If I had heard you talk about the " teenage rebellion" at 4 years of age I would have been likely to blow it off --except I have been going through that with my 4 year old --a first in my life with horses. Can really make you appreciate the easy ones.

I've had a gelding for a year now...13-15 yo...but he loves to play in the field and for a long time now I've said he's a rebellious teen/pre-teen. Only this summer did I begin learning what you do and others in terms of reading him and working with him productively. It requires a huge shift in training/communicating for the human and that brings about huge improvement in the horse. Thank you!

Thank you for your comment about dropping the head during lunging. I’ve always looked at it as a back stretch and never really thought about it being a dominant thing. I’ve always preferred geldings and I have a mare now that does this a lot.

Stretching her head down was due to the change of lighting where the arena ends and cast shadows. Notice she does it at the same point nearly every time. Horses have poor depth perception and will often need to get a close perspective on changes of terrain or shadowing to know what they are wtepping on. Same reason they will paw at water or terrain changea. If he would have actually let her put her head down there a couple of times she would have stopped doing it. Her leg was cocked while fussing with the bit at the same time because he had just pulled her around and was about to step across but he stopped her. Thusscausing her to rest her foot like that. Some good stuff here, but also some things that are not quite as he said. As for geldings vs mares i will agree that people seem to prefer geldings over mares. In my experience, geldings seem to have more try bc they are pleasers. Both just come back to them understanding what you are asking and confusion. A gelding will give more try when they dont understand, where as a mare you have a discussion when they dont understand. There are pros and cons of both. In her trot I would say her right stifle is locking. Could change as she muscles up, though I have seen horses where it muscles but they just have a chronicly week stifle and it never goes away.

When she's trotting, she makes really short steps with her hinds. Seems like she hasn't been trained on that yet. Beautiful mare with much potential to be a great horse if trained well

Such an interesting series. If I understand this right, to gain their trust you try to convince them that what you ask is both safe and secure. Once they understand that then they are more likely to comply with your requests.

Agree 100% that animals, in human/animal interactions, do what they have learned is effective. So, I see all her head lowering etc, as being misinformed rather than lying. She's pragmatic - it's worked before. She's a great example of how people get attached to external behaviors rather than how the animal is thinking.l She got release for acting submissive but not being submissive. Smart animal. Beat she comes along fast with some clarity.

My horse is in the arena of lead. I am sitting on the rail the horse has a quiet temperament is being friendly but in my space more than I like. He will occasionally turn his bum to me and just stand there. His ears are not pinned and he is relaxed. He also does this to the steers when they are tie up on the other side of the rail. I drive him away and he goes quietly but I'm not sure what to think?

Every gelding i have owned has been fantastic never a problem but mares i have owned totally opposite

I was a big fan of loud colored Paints. I bought a tri-colored overo mare with blue eyes lined with black, like eyeliner. She was drop-dead gorgeous even when she was trying to kill me. Very food aggressive and bad on trails. Well, guess where she went? To the Amish. The joke was on her. I got the last laugh. I couldn’t afford a professional trainer so she went buh byes.

It isn't just Quarter Horses that go through this at around age 4. You may have known this mare since birth and found it to be a very amicable, cooperative horse. Then she hits 4 and you find you have 1000lb 13yr old kid on your hands. "I don't want to and you can't make me." As to color, on my screen she looks more grulla. She is still a very striking girl.

When used to riding good horse, hard to put up with young horses. You have the patience needed to train them.

Just one look at her frame and you can see that for a horse in work, she has a weak hind end. I have always thought a horse lowering its head was a sign of it either stretching the muscles along the spine, or relaxing after the workout (lunge). Considering some people advocate encouraging a horse to drop its head to relax and chill out; how do you go about distinguishing a horse you get in? If you are treating them as if they are trying to move or dominate you, yet they have been trained or encouraged to drop their head; how confused do they get? Do you have a list of these potential conflicts you ask the owners about in advance of getting a horse in? I wholeheartedly concur re the walking out to the horse, not visa versa.

It was very obvious that she wasn’t using her back end right. I hope she doesn’t have physical issues that make it painful for her. Also, when she lowered her head when she was standing next to you quietly, it looked like she just wanted to lower her head because she was getting relaxed with you. Are you sure she didn’t need rewArding for that instead of punishment?

Health loved animals appear to have to learn to pay attention during teen years especially cause there not babies anymore and can really hurt you if they are playing.
