In this cession I am teaching this horse how to lunge, turn on a lunge line, and ground drive. All very important steps in getting a horse broke to ride.

For anyone thinking this looks too difficult, imagine riding a horse like this who's nervous about feeling something behind her back legs. One day a rope, hat, plastic bag or branch will brush against their back legs and then you'll be on their back dealing with this reaction. Wouldn't you rather get her over it on the ground, on a lunge line, in a safe environment

Yes. I mess with my horses just for the sake of messing with them. Trash bags, pool noodle’s, big wedding dress on her back. You name it, it looks weird, we do it. So then I can take her in parades, put a kid on her, etc. I had a Great Dane dog get loose from next door. He made a bee line for me and that horse and he jumped up and put his front legs all the way over her neck!! I thought, “oh sh…t this could be it.” But she just stood there kinda pissed off but she didn’t move a muscle!! It was brilliant!!

And besides people ought not be afraid to ask more of their horse. Being upset for a few minutes is ok. I get REALLY upset when you make me do taxes, but you think the IRS says ok never mind.

Great teaching segment, the entire video has something for everyone and especially starting a horse. Personally, I like the instructions on hand and rope placement, for the driving exercise. Once she matures more mentally, and focus her energy on the task at hand….she’ll crush whatever it is she wants to accomplish. She just seems that head strong and stubborn to the core (in a good way). Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. ❤️

Thank you for sharing the detail of ground driving in this video. I'm always looking for new ways to work with my horses. I have one driving, another in training to drive, and a saddle horse. I tried this exercise without stirrups and turrets on the harness for all three! I enjoyed seeing how each responded from the ground. I do ground work and ground drive but the free floating lines on both sides adds another element they had to deal with. I thought this was a great warm up for us after a 5 month winter lay off! Thanks!

@@timandersonhorsetraining Thank you...great content! Even though I do not ride I find this fascinating. I was on a horse once a long time, his name was Black Boy. He was 18 hands and massive. I was told he was an ex sulky horse that had been pin fired...anyway this horse was an ***hole that liked to bite people on the shoulder by the base of the neck from behind. I did not know any of this before attempting to ride this horse, and I was as green as could be. I think that black boy figured out in about 10 seconds. I had no idea what I was doing and shrugged me off and threw me on to the ground. My so-called friends that set me up were laughing hysterically at me. They encouraged me to get back in the saddle, and I was subsequently thrown to the ground for the second time. That was the end of my horseback riding career. Yes I have new friends now.

It's common on a ranch to take young horses places to become accustomed to the activity, the smells and sounds of the tack or the branding pen or the cows or the hay balers ... when they are with an experienced bunch of horses that is calm they realize it's nothing to panic about. But it doesn't do anything like actual training for a "saddle broke" horse. That is a 1 to 1 session.
