When we think of the Muslim world, we usually think of the Arab World and surrounding nations. Often, we overlook areas like sub-Saharan West Africa, home to millions of Muslims. Today we'll look at the history of Islam in the region, with a particular focus on Timbuktu, an important centre of learning in the medieval Mali Empire. To embark on this historical journey, we're joined by Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick. Dr. Quick is a Senior Lecturer at the Islamic Institute of Toronto; Head of the History Department of Al-Maghrib Institute; and Outreach Coordinator for the Canadian Council of Imams. He holds a PhD in West African Islamic History from the University of Toronto.

Djéné was the first center of trade and knowledge in West Africa. It is a very old city going back centuries before Jesus Christ. Around 690 AD, the King of Ouagadou, one of the main 5 kingdoms in West Africa at that time, took control of the gold mines. He was the first to declare that all gold was the property of the King. He soon collected a lot of gold and levied and trained a huge army. Then, he annexed the other kingdoms (Mande or Mali, Sosso, Thakrur, Audaghost). He also conquered Djéné, the main trading center. His name was Kayamakan Cissé. After imposing his rule on all other kingdoms, he declared himself Ghana, meaning King conqueror. This is why it was called Ghana Empire. By 1,000 AD Timbuktu was created. Ghana's power was already waning. By 1200 the various Kingdoms had recovered their independance. In the early 1200s The King of Sosso, Soumangourou Kanté, tried to unite the Kingdoms and become Emperor. He was defeated by the young King of Mali, Sundiata Keita around 1235. Then, Mali became the new empire. Timbuktu was growing by them. Around 1300 Mansa Musa Keita became Emperor. He conquered Timbuktu and made it the main trading center. Djéné remained an important trading center but Timbuktu became even more important with the intervention of the King of Mali. The main trading items included gold, salt, books and other commodities such as farm produce.

African centre of trade with europeans and other parts of the world, then came the Moroccan influence and finaly French . But the world had changed where attention was the new world and America, this affected the gold trade. This is a nice short video of how Islam and the Koran (Quran) brought knowledge, culture and education to black people of africa.

Piman Mann Jaques. I hope you are not being clever implying a racist element. The fact that the people of Timbuktu were intelligent muslim scholars, traders and intellects is great credit to Black African history. A different age of expansion.

Mansa Musa wasn't too smart. He aroused the greed and envy of the Arabs and so everyone wanted a piece of Africa.
