Time and Space: Princess Diana's Historic Speech Stepping Back From Public Duties (1993)

On 3 December 1993, Diana, Princess of Wales made a historic speech at a lunch hosted by the brain injury charity Headway. It would be remembered as the speech in which Diana, who had a long association with Headway, announced that she was stepping back from public duties. Her separation from Prince Charles, Prince of Wales the previous year had resulted in a level of media interest - and a lack of privacy - that had, in Diana’s words, become “hard to bear”. She nevertheless assured her hosts that she would remain close to the charitable causes she had supported for so long, telling them that, "in the past twelve years, I can honestly say that one of my greatest pleasures has been my association with people like yourselves."

She would have been the most regal of Queens! I live in US and cried so hard when the news reported that she had passed away. I cannot put my finger on it but she just had "it"....What that "it " is, I have no idea. She had grace she was poised she never appeared to be "snooty ". Compassionate, beautiful, caring of ALL people not just the rich and famous. That truly made her "the Queen of people's hearts " Even today, the world is still a little saddened at the fact that she is no longer here.

Princess Diana was a trail runner .. that lived through and had seen the suffering of human life such as not one of us on earth have seen or heard. She was the definition of Bravery. Her home life with her husband and all those that surrounded her pressured her so intense ! She was abused physically spiritually and emotionally..And yet she continued.. to fight for everything she knew to get care for the sick and food for the hungry. .more. She reminded me of Audrey Hepburn ..true humanitarian. She could have stood alone in her calling without any direction of from Anyone. It was not a mistake she made by marrying into deception..for without the world wouldn't have Prince William or Prince Harry. Who are both more like her in their own passion to carry her message of love for all human life on our planet. Harry being the Bold..and the Brave.. William being filled with compassion as his Mother. Both the boys now men are fighting to keep their dear mothers vision and legacy..Both are doing a fine work to achieve and complete what their mother laid out for them..and broke the ground for them to do so. They grabbed the torch and caught the flame to carry to all generations. Kudos to both! Harry's heart is England his true home and family ..but because he spoke out on his life in royalty publicly (Bravery) He was made a spectacle similar to his mother. William chose another route. Truth will Always surface eventually in life. As for their father... That is another book. I am an American from a strong military family .. The Royal Family was on our TV everyday it seemed. But..their popularity exploded when Princess Diana came on the scene. She took the world by her smile and grace ..love and compassion. She Never suffered fools. Long may you run Princess Diana the whole world loves you and misses you much. Your sons are doing a Fine job ! Your legacy lives on forever.

She gave so much to the RF. Wasnt valued as a hardworking member not just the mother of two boys that guaranteed the succession. Charles and his choice of second wife shows the difference in character and the lack of sincerety of the current duo. The crowns on their heads don't make the slightest difference. Four years before her death they tried to destroy her spirit.

@Leah Gerrard Camilla will always be his SIDE PIECE -- and she'll NEVER get over that. Cute, how you think their "love" was interrupted by outside forces, instead of them just deciding to go their not-in-love separate ways when they were younger -- including her marrying someone else. That means when they reconnected, they also decided to have an extramarital affair. At the BEGINNING, Camilla could've shown him the door, and she didn't. So I don't want to hear about any "great love" because no one helplessly "falls" in love -- you have to work at it -- and like I said, she could've slammed the door in face, any DECENT woman would........

Interesting video. It's a piece of the puzzle I had not seen before. When Diana's tell-all book was published in 1992, the queen and prince Philip met with Diana and counciled her to think about what she was doing to the monarchy and William's future. They tried to encourage Diana to be loyal to the monarchy. Prince Philip corresponded with Diana trying to encourage her to be loyal to the monarchy. Diana perceived Philip's encouragement as criticism and mistreatment. The book prompted the 1992 official separation. Charles and Diana had been informally separated since 1986. Diana was warned that if she was not loyal to the monarchy her title Her Royal Highness would be removed. Diana's BBC Panorama interview was intended to undermine Charles and destroy his reputation. Philip stopped speaking to Diana after her BBC interview. The interview prompted the queen to request the divorce. Diana was fired from her position in the royal family for being disloyal to the monarchy. ~~~~~ Diana had been assigned patronage for 30 to 100 charities. She was most active with her charitable efforts between 1992 and 1996. I didn't realize her duties were reduced in 1993. I know Diana was reduced to 6 charities after the divorce.

Ironically, I would have thought that she should have stuck to this, perhaps been more specific at the time that her public role was over or ending so she wouldn't be fair game for the paparazzi. Her return and then her 2nd semi retirement after her divorce from Charles confused the issue. She used the media to further her causes but by 1992 she must have known how crazy the attention could get or she wouldn't have made this speech. This is the sort of speech she should have made and stood by if that was her wish. Instead she had to live the circus between the separation and divorce. Leaking stories etc only increases the appetite for more. We mustn't forget this was a first. This had never happened before in history and thank god there weren't smartphones then.

If there was a contest between Diana and Camilla for biggest home wrecker, Diana wins the contest. Diana had 8 or more affairs between 1985 and 1996. Some of her affairs were with married men and the tabloids labeled Diana a home wrecker. Diana caused Will Carling's divorce. She tried to break up Oliver Hoare's marriage. Dodi was engaged to Kelly Fisher when Diana became involved with him. Diana knowingly hurt other women. There is no justification or excuse for Diana to have affairs with married men. The marriage between Charles and Diana informally ended in 1986. By 1986 they were living separately and like single people. Charles ended his intimate relationship with Diana when he discovered Diana was involved and in love with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee in 1985-1986. He was married. Charles renewed his intimate relationship with Camilla after ending his intimate relationship with Diana. ~~~~~ Diana admitted Charles was faithful until 1986. Diana admitted she had an affair with James Hewitt starting in 1986. She was not a Saint.
