This presentation was given as part of the Dylan at FIU Symposium in Miami, FL on 9 April, 2022, organised by the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, on the occasion of the closing of Retrospectrum, the big exhibition of Bob Dylan's visual art.
I've included our Q&A at the end, but you can watch the complete panel, "Beyond Generations Symposium: Conversation about Dylan as Artist, Thinker, Poet, Performer," with Richard F. Thomas, Rebecca Slaman, and Anne Margaret Daniel here: • Bob Dylan Beyond Gener...
Thank you to Rebecca Friedman and Enrique Roswell for making this event possible, and for editing the footage from the live stream to include the slides.
You can listen to Definitely Dylan on the podcast platform of your choice. For more info, check out the website: definitelydylan.com/

This week is also the last chance to get your hands on the "This is what a Bob Dylan fan looks like" t-shirts, which you can find in the shop on the website: www.definitelydylan.com/shop
A small note:
One of the examples for Dylan's Deep Focus paintings, "The Novelist" (doesn't he look like Leonard Cohen?), has not actually been identified as a film still yet. A lot of the paintings come from films, and they all share that pictorial depth and cinematic quality, but for the sake of accuracy, it should be pointed out that it's possible that particular image doesn't come from a film.
Thanks for watching!

I hope your talk gets lots of views. Many folks have reacted to Dylan's paintings (and also writings, drawings, welded gates, and films like Renaldo and Clara) as if they were just hobbies or taken up during times of writer's block or diversions from his main craft. You bring us a much richer and more satisfying view which changes how we see Dylan's art and shows us the common themes in all his artistic expressions. Many thanks!

I am so happy I came across your talk, and I’m definitely subscribing to your podcast! As soon as you started speaking about When I Paint My Masterpiece I became very excited (and decided to comment), as I recently visited the Dylan Center in Tulsa, and the act of creativity as self-creation is such a key theme of the installations. I’m also very glad to hear more women considering Dylan!

I can understand how painting and songwriting are connected, because I felt a similar connection between the disparate disciplines of kendo, tea ceremony, kyudo and the game of Go when I was studying them.

the discussion about the imagery in painting, film and songwriting and the relationship with the time was quite brilliant and suggests an area of study that may even transcend Dylan eventually,.

Switched off as soon as she brings up the political stuff at the start. It’s so offensive to be sexist, racist and ageist in this way. Old white men can’t help being what they are in the same way women, people of colour or homosexuals can’t. Imagine giving a lecture about the history of Motown and starting with the comment it’s great to be here, normally it’s only old black men who speak - would that be acceptable?

I've had conversations with a lot of the old straight white men who have written important books about Bob Dylan, and they get what I mean and agree. It's not about age or gender or race, it's about having different, additional perspectives. So maybe just chill out and don't be so fragile.

I think you’re maybe making the comment about me being “fragile” assuming I’m male, white and old. I just find it so frustrating when people of obvious talent, intellect and education as yourself still feel they have to “hook” an audience by playing a race or gender card. Your talent is obvious and stands on its own merits and you should be heard for what you say - what you are (race, gender, age, religion etc.) is irrelevant. Keep up the good work on Dylan, you do have my best wishes on that.💛

All the analysis doesn't add up to the one thing that truly counts...that the televised production was not that good. It was pretentious and as overextended an attempt at profundity as the musings by Dylanologists who sometimes over interpret his lyrics. I'm the biggest Bob fan there ever was and I just feel that the PR is disingenuous. His paintings are improvement from his earliest works, but I applaud his serious immersion into subject matter that is important to him. Dylan is one of the greatest artists in history, in any medium. It is his music that makes this so.

I understand the emphasis on women in your opening statement, but was it really necessary to introject sexual orientation and race into it?
@definitelydylan1982
@definitelydylan1982 6 ай бұрын
Was it "necessary"? No, but I wanted to mention it because I've been around the Dylan world for long enough to know that the majority of people writing about him historically have been men, pretty much all white and mostly straight. Those guys have done great work, but it would be great to get additional perspectives in the future.

@@definitelydylan1982 well i guess the point is that just cause one's a certain colour or gender, doesnt mean one has an interesting/reflected perspective to offer on this subject. Perspectives are shaped by so many more interesting things than colour and sex, basically everything in life plays a role. getting a "white " or "black " or female" perspective for the sake of it seems to me to marginalise said person into the superficial.
