Eight hundred years ago the people of Kenfig on the south coast of Wales thought they had built the perfect town, nestled round a harbour with easy access to the sea and a sheltered position.
The town appears to have been a thriving commercial success but then it vanished, leaving just a few castle walls to mark its existence.
Extraordinarily, the ruins of the complete town are believed to still lie buried under the immense sand dunes that have covered the whole site since a series of violent storms lashed the coast over 500 years ago.
But even before the storms made life untenable in Kenfig, it seems that the Welsh locals weren't too keen on its Angle-Norman settlers. There are records of a series of attacks from early in the town's life.
After getting through 10 metres of sand, Tony Robinson and the Team have just three days to work out the size of the lost town and see if there's any evidence that the Welsh inflicted any damage on the interlopers.

If this had been the first series, we all would have loved it. Alex is actually quite good. However, we had years of Stewart and Helen doing it even better and that was sadly missed, then the producers failed to listen to Mick and that was it...how sad.

@@Em-sv3ks They were losing viewers. So they made changes to the formula in hopes of getting those viewers back. Mick disagreed (he felt they were dumbing down the show). He also disagreed with the appointment of Mary-Ann and he left the team (Mary-Ann followed two days later). He was very bitter about it, and unfortunately passed away in 2013, by which time the series had been cancelled. Quite a few fan-favorites (Stewart, Helen) were replaced, and it's a controversy among Time Team fans to this day. I, for one, think it's unfair to Alex and Mary-Ann. The new Time Team has brought back a lot of the old members, and with new presenters as well, and the two new episodes are quite well received.

I wonder if as the town got more established and prosperous, that they stripped the vegetation from the surrounding dunes,(reeds and grasses for thatching,scrub and trees for building), eventually leaving them bare, and mobile... So when that series of storms came, the now unstable dunes shifted...

this happened in the western high plains of the US, where topsoil was blown heavily due to over-cultivation of fields prior to planting. in the last 20 years, "no-till" planting has become the norm, with minimal cultivation happening, and crops are sewn directly into older crops. the old decaying plants help hold the soil.
@JonFrumTheFirst
@JonFrumTheFirst Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Between cutting down trees and plowing for farming, they would have exposed the topsoil to erosion. The Provincelands of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA are a prime example. Once covered with trees, much of the outer cape is now exposed sand, with the dunes of the Provincelands looking like the Sahara. Wind will push dunes like waves in the sea, but first you need sufficient exposed sand to move. I'm sure ecologists in the UK know this, but they just weren't asked.

The ground-penetrating radar is amazing but the equipment is mounted on appears to lack engineering. The wheels should be much larger and I have an under slung carriage. The wheels could be 10 inches in diameter and make moving it across rough ground much easier. If I worked on Time Team, I would have been pushing to allow me to modify that piece of equipment. It would have been a simple one day project.

The initial storm must have dumped about a meter or so of sand over the town, considering that the walls they're digging up don't seem much higher than that. I feel sorry for her actually. I just started binge watching but I don't remember any of the other cast having to plaster "insincere smiles" while being filmed close up. There's something unnatural in how she presented in this show. I'd imagine that it was not easy for her and Alex to break in that group that have been working for years. I miss seeing Stewart... Kenneth Bryan How’s that again?! Dr. Pryor is an eminent archaeologist whose specialty is prehistoric Britain. He has several books to his credit, and he has been in many many episodes of TimeTeam, going back to about season 5, IIRC. You may not care for him-there’s no accounting for tastes- but he’s absolutely no “hack”. The hacks would be Alex and MaryAnn, who have no business being there.

@@RKHageman Nah Mary-Ann is a well known historian as well. She was unfortunately hired to be an actor rather than showing her actual skill and thus left as soon as the contract ran out. She was made to ask dumb stuff she definitely knew the answers to etc. It's the directors and producers fault. Though the show was already crashing down around season 17 numbers wise, so this was their last ditch attempt at rejuvenating the show. Which didn't go so well.

Ugh. Season 19 is painful to watch. Tony and Phil were still wonderful, of course. John plugging along doggedly with his geophys. Always a happy moment whenever Raksha turns up. But, so many favorites gone and the magic drained from the show. I wonder if Francis was frustrated with the nonsense dumped in his lap. The show lost its alchemy. Mary-Ann Ochata was an abomination. What idiot cast her in Time Team? Utterly irritating. Alex Landlands was good enough but has been used to far better effect in other series (e.g. Wartime Farm). His insertion into Time Team just feels forced and awkward, but he made an honest go of it. The casting changes were the death knell of the long beloved series. It's so sad that the cheapening of Time Team was one of the last things Mick Aston had to endure shortly before his death. It says a lot that he had the integrity to walk away when he did instead of being party to a travesty.

you do realise there's more to archeology than just being able to dig a hole, right?
