You've worked out and implemented an excellent feeding system! Good to see it, and see your cattle enjoy it. It's always a pleasure to see your healthy and well-cared for cattle. Probably the best I've seen...other operations have beef cattle that don't look as good as yours. And it's always lovely to see beautiful Callie around you...she's grown into a truly lovely young dog. You're an outstanding farmer/rancher, FT. Your videos are a joy to watch.

Yes but Mike buys all the newest goodies that cost a lot of money, although I think he gets sponsors. Also, he had to downsize his herd because of economics. I can imagine that equipment does help in the daily blizzard conditions that he gets in Wyoming.

Also, here in KY some folks unroll the hay along a slant feeding panel fence. 8' panels, wood post, 8'panel etc etc. if you're feeding/finishing with grain, we put concrete feed troughs down and can do a drive by with a gravity feeder dropping the grain in. Keeps the cows and the muck on one side and feed clean on the other.

Time for you to build a bale unroller for the tractor's 3 point hitch. Just a suggestion. The best part by you feeding the bales that way is that it spreads the organic matter out in the paddocks. Just as it did when feeding the large square bales like you did. I see the pup figured out her spot on the four wheeler. Looks like she likes to ride along with you. Keep up the good work there. Take care.

I built an unroller for my tractor's 3 point hitch, but I wish I had gone with an unroller that can be pulled behind an ATV like Greg Judy does. Much less compaction of the soil using an ATV.

I definitely think you are on the right track. With your skills, I think a bale unroller would be a nice piece of equip. to have. Should you get sick or unable to feed your bales, Mrs. FTR would be able to feed for a short time. Rolling out your hay should really improve your pasture in the next few years. I really enjoy your videos.
@arrowjmfarms
@arrowjmfarms Жыл бұрын
There will be a little bit of waste, but don't think of it as waste per say. What's left will simply be broken back down into nutrients and organic matter for the soil and almost be like a fertilizer for future grass production. I unroll most of my hay for this reason - to spread out those nutrients much like you did here. You may not see a lot of grass production in that spot this year but next year that spot will have the greenest and tallest grass in that paddock. Good job man. Cool to see how you're doing it out there in CA compared to us here in OK.

Mike from "Our Wyoming Life" on KZfaq uses the same technique as you of stringing the hay in a straight line. He said that this way the cows poop on it less. Due to the narrowness of the hay line. So less wasted hay.

Round bales have always pondered me ... Rounds are easy to leave in the field or stack, but overwintering storage in the field the outer layer gets all wet and mildewed. Putting a round into a round bale feeder station, that same outer layer is the first eating food for the livestock. Otherwise, you need to unroll the outer layer (wasted hay) to get to the remaining quality hay. Please inform me about why round bales are better than the old rectangle bales (that are barned).

I feed round bales (can't handle many squares at 85), but I normally use round bale feeders. Some waste, but not bad. I, on occasion, will roll one down the hill and I have found if there are enough cattle in the field to eat most of it in a day and a half there is little waste. If they don't clean it up quickly they mess it and won't eat it. p.s. Back in the day I used to make 4x4 and prefer them, but now I pay "the baler man" and and get 4x5. p.p.s. Old-timer once told me leave 10% for the field.
